The oil cooler lines have been leaking on my 1998 Chevy C1500 2wd 350/5.7L pickup truck for a few years now...getting worse as times goes on. Given my history with cooler lines, I think its time we replace these before they leave me stranded...this is my "get the stranded car" rig, so I don't have anything that can get it from somewhere.

Removing the radiator shroud makes the removal and install process a lot easier and faster. I just replaced both upper and lower oil cooler lines on my 98 silverado 5.7... not having the shroud in the way was nice.

That’s why I do it, I always looks for a KZbin video to know what I’m getting into and if I can do it better or if I need a speciality tool.

The best thing you can do is simply cut the crimp connector and hose OFF of the factory type lines, flare the end of the aluminum tube and slip a piece of high pressure hose over it and clamp the hose on. The crappy crimp connectors are what leak get rid of them and they will never leak again.

No doubt a good idea. Those crimps just suck.

Thanks for atleast describing how to get the lines out of the truck. About to do this job tomorrow and was wondering how I should go about getting the lines out from their place.

Whoever engineered those lines are incredibly dumb, they leak on EVERY Chevy that has them... Absolutely horrible design. You can fix it with AN connectors and braided steel line instead if you want and it will never leak again.

can you put the hose into the connector before screwing into the oil filter adapter? the connector would have to spin around the line itself....or does the clip prevent rotation of the connector?
@Turbo231

The clip makes it fairly tight but I think it can move.

@@Turbo231 after doing this job i would not do it that way. probably would score the flange. having said that: SAFELY jack up vehicle. use jack stands and hydraulic jack as a backup!!! victim: 1997 gmc 5.7 L k2500 SL -this job is a pain in the ass butt...) degreaser...clean it up. fan blowing leaking oil all over the place makes it unpleasant business. rags or towels. Work light...it's dark. You can't see shinola.. 10 mm socket to remove top fan shrouding pliers to remove top radiator hose. 13 mm to loosen bracket em bracing the large black cylinder thing socket set....1 " socket open ended 1" wrench 15 mm - to remove shroud and in my case a support bracket. really i just removed the lower one and banged it over with a hammer a bit. too much bother to get to the top nut. 20 mm open ended wrench to remove radiator spin nuts. lower one is a bother like video suggests but can be done. i did have a little trouble getting the new ones in for some reason. pick set: BUY THIS or make picks from some coat hanger or other. really can't easily do this without. operative work being easily oil filter wrench. removal makes work far more accessible. new oil filter and oil to fill new oil line connectors. IMPORTANT. Dorman part 800-801 has clips that will replace the ones that fly off into the unknown. yes, the new connectors do come with new clips. yes, several of them did vanish upon installation attempt. Note: i had to spread open the dorman clips a bit to get them installed. Practice putting the oil filter end of the oil line into the connector so you know what to do when under the vehicle. It is vital that the tube sorta snaps into place. The flange against the connector DOES NOT cut it. Practice putting the clips on so you have a game plan when under the car. Consider tying a thread to the clip to prevent it running away. You have been warned. Then...using your tools and lots of patience, pull the clips using the pick set you just purchased and beg the old connectors to come out after multiple 1/16" turns using 1" open ended wrench. A thin version of this size wrench would make it easier. Don't know how video used a crescent wrench. Now...in truth...what i did was cut the lines near the oil filter housing with a sawsall. this way i could slip the box end of the wrench over the connectors and have it. unfortunately i did not use a metal blade and it jumped around a bit. so much so that I cut a one inch gash in the oil pan. Whoops. I used JB weld to repair. Lines now removed after incremental lefty lucy's. Do as video suggests, put the top connector and line in first. Just makes sense. It is the longer one btw. WARNING: the round cap must snap in place around the clip to secure the clip. Repeat: the round cap must snap in place around the clip to secure the clip. doing so ensures the clip is nested in the groove properly. I kinda didn't do this on the lower line which blew off. My driveway now has a thirty foot streak of a 40 buck five gallons of synthetic oil down it. New driveway too. Bought cheap oil after getting lower line properly set. Job done i think. A bit leary of my work. Will check everyday for the next week. Have fun
