1998 Fiat Cinquecento - Used Car Overview & Buying Advice

Ian Royle speaks to Tim Crossley about a 1998 model Fiat Cinquecento, who talks about the car's performance and handling, as well as what it offers in terms of practicality and value for money. Not so much the proportions, but the styling reminds me very much of a 1990s Suzuki Swift, with the rear lights reminding me of a 1990s Daihatsu Charade

I had a 1998 Cinq' S (S is for Standard). A great little car, nothing wrong with the steering as long as you're not used to power steering which would be pointless on this model as it weighs next to nothing. Brakes were good as well, I don't know what the presenter means. I drove it from Liverpool to Torquay on 1 tank of fuel (filled to the cap almost, £33 at the time) with a bit left over when I got there. I only recently sold it because the repairs got to the point of fixing/replacing something every month, it was 16 years old though.

? strange I had the sporting model and steering was poor. had other non power steering cars in that era too. fiesta, Civic and they were far better. overall a shite of a car as a cheaper Micra mk1 was a lot of efficient and easier to drive especially uphill

The Volkswagen Lupo is the same size, and did far better in the crash results. It was also built in the same era as the Seicento. So better off with a Lupo. No one buys a car expecting to have a crash. Its more a question of what others drivers are going to do. That's why we need to have safe cars and its important to buy a safe car to.

The crash test results for the Cinquecento and the Seicento are. APPALLING. Better off with a Corsa. They did far better, and are just a tiny bit bigger.

But theyre as dull and copy/paste as any other boring car on the road. I'm not saying the Cinq is an AMAZINGLY different car, its just not every day you see em' !
