Those were the days! I always liked the old Honda interiors, the feel of the switches, the textures of the plastics, leather and dash. The simple laid out designs and the 2 tone contrasting colors. In my opinion they were the best for the time and the price.

Interestingly enough it seems as though the front end of the 2013-2015 model took some design cues straight from the 1998-2002 model with the rectangular hedlights and similar shape of the grill. Or, at least that's what it reminded me of.

Motor week really knows how to present these cars in a way to make them look attractive! I never realized just how clean and handsome this generation looks inside and out, especially in coupe form. It's interesting to see Dave demonstrate the interior of the car for a change rather than just being the voice of motorweek.

Still driving a 99 ex coupe. All stock other than a Bluetooth adapter. Wish it was manual, but it has over 200k and no issues with the automatic. To be fair this car is immaculately maintained and I am only its 2nd owner. I get compliments everywhere I go. The red color and overall style is great and I quickly fell in love with it. Had a 99 Accord Coupe. Bought it new kept it for 11 years until a lapse in concentration caused me to total it. It really wasn't that damaged but at its age, my insurance company thought it better to write it off than fix it. It had 174k miles on it at the time and was still running like new. I just had to keep the routine maintenance up. The only problem I had out of it was a lug nut that broke off once while I was trying to change a flat tire.

My first new car was a 2000 EX V6 coupe. Very happy with my choice. Timeless styling that, maybe aside from the trunk, still looks modern today. I had the 2002 EX sedan (the tail end of this generation). I gave it away to my mechanic after 200,000 miles because the automatic transmission was acting up; the last time I checked though, the car is still going strong with a new owner. I personally prefer the smaller sportier Accords from the 1980s but this was still an amazing car; I never cared for the Camry, by comparison.

My first car was a 1998 Accord EX V6 sedan in Dark Emerald Pearl (dark green color that they kept around through the 2001 MY). Like most of the autos, mine had a faulty transmission, but after getting that repaired, the car was an absolute trooper throughout college and for a couple years after. A certain solid feel that new Hondas lack. Mine was replaced with a 2014 Accord EX-L V6, and I consider that to be the last “authentic” Accord made.

Well here are my thoughts on Hondas of that time. It is well establiahed that at least the Accords and Civics during the early 90s were some of their best. I purchased a 98 Civic brand new and after 20k miles, it started to have problems: automatic started slipping, cracked radiator, engine mounts, and even the converter/manifold cracked before 90k miles. Mine was the LX so maybe the EX was built better. Fast forward to the Hondas and it was a mixed bag. One of my friends never complained about the transmission, but had engine problems. Another friend, the reverse. Same version of this Accord being reviewed. I was informed by a import mechanic that Honda in an attempt to keep up production sub contracted alot of their work: powertrains. Even some of the engines had to be recalled due to bad piston rings. Of course, a contractor will try to squeeze as much 🙄 profit as possible. Nothing new, but this why some Honda model years were better than others. Then again, Honda has had some issues with their 9 and 10 speeds as well. One of my friends, had an Odyssey and it easily went over 250k miles so some were good and some bad.

Currently, I own a 2017 Honda Accord Coupe with the V6 and the 6-speed manual. The J35Y2 is a powerful engine that unfortunately wheels spins all the way up to 3rd gear. It pulls hard. It's a coupe but is very spacious. It's big but doesn't look large and will not be mistaken for a sedan. It's beautiful. Compared to so many other cars, the Accord is almost magical because its spacious, powerful, beautiful, incredibly reliable, and not overly expensive. It's a little bit of the best of everything. However, there is one major downfall to the Accord Coupe. It killed the Honda Prelude. Personally, I would like to see the return of the Accord Coupe (or a slightly larger Civic) as the Prelude. Make it smaller and wider, and put the glorious K20C ripping to 320HP and of course a 6-speed manual (or even Honda/Acura incredible 8-speed DCT). One last horra before electrification comes to the forefront.

When I totaled my 96 Accord sedan as a 16 year old in 2005, it was replaced with a 98 Accord EX V6 coupe. That car was so fun and fast and I think about it often. Replaced it with an 04 Accord sedan a few years later and put 220k miles before trading it in for yet another coupe. Honda has gotten away from its roots and it’s sad. I’m driving a Volvo these days and honestly unimpressed by what Honda is putting out, they seem to be phoning it in. I miss these cars and will always fondly remember that black on black coupe that was so willing to burn the front tires while being silky smooth.

This gen coupe is the best looking Accord of all. Great cars. Except the damn automatic transmission failed prematurely.

Too bad this generation had TERRIBLE automatic transmissions on the V6 models. I had a 99 V6-EX sedan, and it went through 3 transmissions in the year I owned it. Replaced it with a 2003 V6-EX coupe and its transmission dropped at 23k miles. Haven't had a Honda since that car. I currently drive a Mazda6 4 cyl and am happy with it.

What a bargain even back then. Nice car line. ABS is badly missing, but why in the year of 1998?
