This is awesome, really big help for me. Im pulling my 2.5L tomorrow, trying to get as much info in as i can. Seems fairly straight forward. I was gonna take off the fenders just for more room but i dont think i will after seeing this.

Same thing here 99 Wrangler 2.5L 121,000 Miles Cylinder number 2 Disintegrated and completely destroyed the block. Managed to find a $1697 crate motor. Engine is mostly put together on a stand as of an hour ago.Waiting for a new clutch and some other odds and ends to show up in the mail today. Then Hopefully Dropping it tomorrow night.

Not sure if you can help me out or not but we are rebuilding my moms jeep motor but when i got to the fuel rail to relieve fuel pressure, there is no test port how should i go about relieving fuel pressure?
@MatHelm
@MatHelm 4 жыл бұрын
At 1:42 "Make the engine weigh a whole lot less"? Not hardly, and of course not the reason you drain it. Now draining the oil is a new one. I mean I guess in your case (assuming you're going to rebuild), why not. But if there are no plans, you always leave the oil in a block just because the oil is worthless, and the next guy might want to test it without wasting 5 new quarts of oil. Also, the ECU pulls a vacuum on the gas tank for emissions check, but there is no pressure. So cap stays on because everything's always safer that way. And it has zero effect on fuel pressure. Tank vents have one way check valves on them, so they release any pressure, but close with the aforementioned vacuum is pulled.

Hey, great video. How did your rebuild on that engine go? Did you do most of the work yourself? I'd like to rebuild my 1995 2.5L 4 cylinder Wrangler engine and was wondering if it's worth it.
@aaronnovak1490
@aaronnovak1490 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim, I just overhauled my '93 2.5L which is the same setup almost exactly. Took me me about 2 weeks with a out of pocket cost of about $675. I replaced the cam and lifters, had the cylinders punched .020 over, replaced the exhaust valves, reground the intakes, re-cut the valve seats, new timing set, bearings, media blasted the block, epoxy primer and enamel topcoat. Runs like a sewing machine now....this is one of the easiest engines to overhaul and very cost effective.

Aaron Novak Wow, that is a great price. I'm not sure how much block work I'm going to need. Two different mechanics just told me to swap it out with a used engine, that a rebuild isn't worth it. I need to check with some local machine shops. I figured I'm going to need to spend at least $1500 just for the machining and parts without assembly. I'd like to try and assemble it myself but I've never done it. Id need to teach myself with KZbin videos and the FSM.
@jimepler
@jimepler 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Aaron, Do you recommend an online parts distributor to purchase the timing set, bearings, gaskets, cam and lifters? Also wondering if you purchased new pistons and rods? I'm also thinking of putting on a new clutch assembly since the manual recommends changing it when the engine is removed. Prices vary on parts and I want to make sure the place I end up using is reputable. Prices on Partsology.com are very reasonable but I'm not sure if they're legit.
@aaronnovak1490
@aaronnovak1490 7 жыл бұрын
northern auto parts is good for the engine internals. most machine shops charge $150 to bore and hone the block. I used the original rods, new bearings and pistols. most mechanics don't overhaul engines so their opinions are pretty limited.
@jimepler
@jimepler 7 жыл бұрын
thanks, Northern Auto Parts looks like a good bet. I've been surprised at how many people have told me that I shouldn't rebuild. Lots of people on forums told me the same thing. Rebuilding seems to make the most sense, both from an economic standpoint and a practical standpoint. Why pay $600-$1200 for a used engine with as many (or more) miles than on my engine which could crap out on me at anytime? Seems like a lost art. I'm pretty sure 20-30 years ago EVERYONE would have recommended an engine rebuild. I was even told that I wouldn't be able to find a machine shop that will do blocks anymore, that everyone will only do heads. I haven't started looking at local machine shops yet but I can't believe that is true.

Solid Ground Staging I got it out! Came across a speed bump. I'm replacing the 1998 2.5 L engine with a 1999 2.5L engine they look identical. But the clutch spline's are different. Will the 1999 engine work with the transmission from the 1998 2.5 L? Both the flywheels are exactly the same. Also thank you for replying. Not sure if it matters or helps but the vehicle I'm working on is a 1998 Dodge Dakota Sport.

Alex TL Martinez that is a great question. I’m not exactly sure. I would call a dodge dealership or a local junk yard to see if they would know. I’m glad you got it out and hope everything works out great for you.
