Make a nice cup of tea. Get your dinner ready. And get comfortable. This race is one of the greatest duels in F1 history. Hakkinen at his best vs Schumacher at his best!

Thanks for posting this piece of evidence on why we need a German Grand Prix back on the calendar, Hockenheim or Nurburgring, either way is good. Not some weird, potentially dangerous Mariokart track in Qiddiya.

I remember watching this LIVE. Schumacher was hot favourite with the bookies for the title, the German racing in his backyard and a Ferrari 1-2 on the grid with the faster car at that stage of the season, as well as all of the momentum having wiped out Hakkinen’s 22pts Championship lead (60pts in today’s system). This would become Hakkinen’s finest hour. Catching Schumacher’s 10 second lead after Irvine’s defensive display and passing both Ferrari’s to effectively snatch the title from under Schumacher’s nose. The greatest dry weather drive of the last 30yrs from the Flying Finn.

I think this is one of the most underrated races of all time, it really showed Hakkinen's championship credentials. Also the last race appearance of the legend Ricardo Rosset

1:42:46 - that is one unhappy German. Bridgestone also showed their superiority over a stint over Goodyear here. Has to be said, without taking away from Mika's win.
@davegiles2610Ай бұрын
That's true and is highlighted by the Benetton's going better than they had for ages here. I remember Irvine also saying that he thought that Mclaren underperformed in practice, then got it together in the race, which is probably true. I've just had a flick through and what is pretty staggering is that Hakkinen was only just ahead of DC when he passed Eddie, yet managed to pull out a lead that equated to a complete pitstop over his teammate!
@Pullaka28 күн бұрын
Rewatching it right now, I have doubts of what would be the result if Ferrari brings Michael into the pits one lap before encountering the Stewart of Verstappen, cause the gap was reduced from 8 seconds to 5 (42:34). If Schumy stays ahead of Mika after the first stop, the race could have been different. Even when I agree that McLaren and Bridgestone combo was better at this race, Schumy could still have a chance.

Such a thrilling piece of entertainment from 2 titans, we all know what happened in the title decider 6 weeks. Ferrari's mistake of not getting to Schu's car in time which caused his engine to overheat, thus stalling. And of course the puncture he suffered further in the race after storming up to third from last.

Murray's Schumacher-biased commentary is always so obvious in every race. His word choice and tone of voice and inflection betray him each time. His sadness at the end when Mika was about to win the race is simply unprofessional.

@43:33 would turn out to be the decisive moment of the season where the Championship changed hands. F1 Racing at its best! And we don’t need a Race Director to engineer a close finish. This was the two heavyweights at that time, in their pomp, at the best, going toe to toe with a Championship on the line.

Meanwhile I think I found it on reddit. It's signaling that the ad break is aproaching. I hoped it contained some live timing data to process by broadcasters and commentators. "a little box in the corner of the screen containing black and white diagonal scrolling lines when an advert break was approaching."

If nürburg is Luxemburg then I'm the Pope. They should simply say that it was germany. Nobody would complain. I miss those times with hakinnen and Schumacher.
@joshhodkinson9677Ай бұрын
They couldn't call it the German Grand Prix because that was the race at Hockenheim, and you're only allowed to have one race named after each country, so they changed it to Luxembourg to adhere to FIA rules.

Well I thought that was banned after the first race of 1998.
@LearnToFly182Ай бұрын
I too recall that being banned after Melbourne (race 1) and they continued to dominate early so it didn’t seem to be hindered by it. Ferrari got stronger as the year went on IIRC?
@Balnazzardi17 күн бұрын
nope, that got banned after 1st race in 1998. In Brazil Mclaren wasnt allowed to use it anymore, but that still didnt effect their performance, they were as dominant in Brazil as they were in Melbourne, so just shut it. Mclaren was good in those years because Adrian Newey joined them from Williams and Mercedes finally managed to build engines that were both powerful AND quite reliable.
