This was objectively the most talented team Tennessee had of all their great 90s teams, on both sides of the ball, and they still got whooped in this game. Their only two losses this season were to teams with elite defensive lines who didn't allow Peyton to dissect the secondary. Goes to show it doesn't matter how good your QB is if you can't keep the defense out of his face.

I grew up rooting for Nebraska. I agree that Nebraska likely would have beaten Michigan in 1997, but I don't think it would have been quite as much of a beat down as they laid on Tennessee in this game. Michigan's speed on defense would have given them fits. But Nebraska's Top 5 defense would have shut down Michigan's bland offense. So long as that physical o-line could take control, I think Big Red wins by 10.

Michigan would've been decided underdogs to Nebraska. They would've stood as good a chance of beating Nebraska as Petyon & Tennessee did. The Big 10 was hot garbage in 1997. Everyone in the Big 10 that Michigan built their resume on got crushed in a Bowl game. (0-6, losing by an average of 19+ points) Washington St. gave up 33 or more points 5 times. Michigan only managed to score 21 against them. Tennessee never gave up 33 points a single time. Nebraska scored 42 against them. Michigan's defense gave up 91.0 YPG on the ground vs a lame Big 10 schedule. (see Bowl results) Tennessee's defense gave up 93.3 YPG on the ground vs an SEC schedule. Nebraska rushed for 409 yards vs Tennessee. Their ground attack would've steamrolled Michigan, whose defense would've been sucking wind by the 4th quarter just like Ray Lewis and Warren Sapp were 3 years earlier in the Orange Bowl. Brian Griese threw for 2,042 yards / 14 TDs / 7.4 YPA / 138.2 QBR vs that lame Big 10 schedule. While Peyton threw for 3,819 yrds / 36 TDs / 8.0 YPA / 147.7 QBR vs an SEC schedule. Nebraska held Peyton to 134 yds / 1 TD / 4.3 YPA / 108.2 QBR. What makes anyone think Griese would've fared any better than Manning vs Nebraska's defense?

@@mas5867 More lies from Rob Johnson. "While the game wasn't able to be played, Las Vegas odds makers placed Nebraska as a 14 point favorite over Michigan in a mythical title game". Also "at least 20 AP poll voters discuss their choice of Michigan over Nebraska that season, but valid reasons for that choice were quite scarce for the offering. Several even granted that Nebraska was likely the better team. Beano Cook, for example, said that Nebraska may have been the better team, but that he voted for Michigan because they "accomplished more." This seemed to be the general feeling among Michigan touters, but it makes no sense. By their own ballots, Nebraska played more rated opponents, higher-rated opponents, and a better bowl opponent. But there was a reason they felt that Michigan accomplished more. And that is because ABC/ESPN relentlessly told us all season that the Big 10 was by far the toughest conference. Just about everyone at a studio desk or in a broadcast booth for those networks that season said so, over and over again. Aside from Michigan, there was Ohio State, who started 5-0 and came into the Michigan game 10-1. Penn State started 7-0, Purdue 6-1, Wisconsin 6-1, Michigan State 5-0, and Iowa 4-0. And ABC/ESPN's non-stop Big 10 lovefest is also the main reason Charles Woodson won the Heisman over Peyton Manning, the preseason favorite who shocked everyone by returning for his senior year, then finally won the SEC. More glaring, if less noticed, was Penn State running back Curtis Enis being selected a consensus All American over Nebraska's Ahman Green. Green was the #2 running back (156.4 yards per game), Enis #11 (123.9). Green averaged 6.8 yards per carry, Enis 6.0. Green scored 22 touchdowns, Enis 19. What did Enis have in his favor? Only that he played for a high-profile Big 10 team. When the bowls arrived, and the Big Ten crashed like the house of cards it was all along, going 2-5, hardly anyone seemed to even notice. Their minds had already been made up. But here are the facts. The Big 10 was 28-16 against nonconference opponents in 1997, good for 4th place amongst conferences. The SEC, virtually ignored by ABC/ESPN all that season, went 37-5, the best record by any conference since World War 2! They went 5-1 in bowl games. The PAC 10, at 28-8, and the ACC, at 22-9, were also well ahead of the Big 10 in the end. The Big 10 did edge out the Big 12, who went 26-16, but the Big 12 did less poorly in their bowls (2-3) and were better against rated nonconference opponents (Big 12 was 5-8, Big 10 was 3-9). Not only was the Big Ten not the best conference in 1997, they were not even particularly good. Most importantly, Michigan played 6 teams in the regular season who earned bowl berths, while Nebraska only played 4. But the 6 teams Michigan played went a disastrous 0-6 in their bowl games, and none of them even came within a touchdown, losing by 18, 10, 28, 15, 27, and 17 points. Nebraska's 4 bowl-bound opponents went 2-2 in their bowls." Rob Johnson, DESTROYED by facts yet again.

From the 95-96 bowl season to the 97-98 bowl season the SEC as a conference only had 2 bowl losses in those 3 seasons if I'm not mistaken. Both were ass whippins handed out by the Big Red Machine.

You're somewhat correct but not quite. in 1995 the SEC went 2-4 in bowl games and the last loss was by Florida against Nebraska which decided the 1995 national championship. In 1996 the SEC went 5-0 in bowls and they were 5-0 this season (1997) until this game was played. So the SEC won 10 bowl games in a row between the two losses to Nebraska.

@@24lancelot85 The SEC had more than 2 losses in the 1995 bowl season. I'm not questioning the wins by Nebraska over Florida and Tennessee I just think he's got his years confused. In 1995 the SEC went 2-4 in bowls and that season was capped off by Nebraska beating Florida in the Fiesta Bowl for the national title. In 1996 the SEC went 5-0 in bowls. In 1997 the SEC won their first 5 bowl games before Nebraska beat Tennessee in the Orange Bowl. Thus the conference finished 5-1 in the '97 bowl season. So saying that the SEC only had 2 bowl losses in 3 seasons is incorrect. Actually the conference only lost 1 bowl game in 2 seasons. The conference did win 10 straight bowl games between the 2 losses to Nebraska. Hope I explained it well.

It is so refreshing to see comments that contain honest and intelligent responses. Viewers that understand what an unbelievable machine the Nebraska team was at its apex. I've seen so many commentaries laced with ignorance and bias against this glorious team. THAT IS SIMPLY IMPOSSIBLE!! Don't forget the 1997 team was a culmination of an era like no other. In 1993, the Huskers lost in the final seconds to Florida State on a missed field goal. Moreover, even Bobby Bowden admitted the Seminoles were outplayed. And the officiating was horrendous. So bad the NCAA apologized for it, later. Nebraska destroyed Miami in the Final Quarter of the 1995 Orange Bowl. Outscoring them in the final period 14-0. IF YOU COMBINE THE FIVE QUARTERS OF THOSE TWO GAMES NEBRASKA OUTSCORED MIAMI AND FLORIDA BY A COMBINED SCORE OF 76-24!! Even Alabama and Georgia now did not attain this level of dominance. THEY OWNED THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. Not with more NFL draft picks. Simply with more good players than any other team. EVER. It's gratifying to see this five year period of unprecedented greatness fully appreciated. It's like will never be seen again.

Pinkfox said it all in his comment. Nebraska had the greatest five year run in the history of college football at 60-3! Simply incomparable. After a stretch of poor bowl performances Tom Osborne got it all right in his swan song. You could easily argue that Tom Osborne was the greatest college coach ever. Like his mentor, the great Bob Devaney, Osborne finished higher than a mountain top. Somewhere in the ozone layer of the college football world. Notice how fast Tennessee looked at the start of the game. And how slow they looked at the end! Against every Nebraska opponent the Cornhuskers depth delivered the decisive blow. Too many good players coached to perfection. The Volunteers were ready to "Un Volunteer" in the second half of this debacle. One inarguable fact is that no team ever dictated what they would do to an opponent like the Cornhuskers. Not Miami or even the Alabama powerhouse now. While Nick Saban has maintained it longer, no team matched this powerhouse at its peak. Their record speaks for itself.

Yet look at difference of 95 compared today. Today there's 40 bowl games to 18 in 1995. With bowl ties to conferences, it would of been extremely difficult to find ranked team for Kansas and Kansas State to play in. The Nebraska championship teams of the 90s played very physical ball that few teams play now. THEY COULD MATCH CURRENT ALABAMA TEAMS. THERE WERE LESS RESTRICTIONS ON PRACTICE AND LESS PROTECTIONS FOR QBS AND RECIEVERS. Back then the big 12 was a running not passing league with defenses geared towards stopping the run first. Get rid of the current protections for Qbs and Young wouldn't last 1 quarter against Nebraska's defense. On the other foot Nebraska qbs would hold up they were tough and used to contact and so were the backs.

I think one of the keys to this game was Nebraska's ability to complete some passes early on. Tennessee was actually shutting down the Husker ground attack to start the game. Once Frost threw successfully, the Vols couldn't commit so much to the run. Then, later on, Nebraska just ground them down.
@jamiecrawford8133
@jamiecrawford8133 2 жыл бұрын
The key was Tennessee's never ending stupid mistakes. Their first good drive Lewis fumbles around the 20. Then Manning throws a brainless interception par for his big game history, he does nothing. Then some pinhead drops a punt at the 15 and pukes up 7 free points. Nebraska was probably the better team but Tennessee sure made things easier for them. This game is eerily like their 1995 game at Kansas where they repeatedly made stupid mistakes and gave the game away.

In a couple comments you hear about the Huskers Schedule. They played four top ten teams and crushed all of them!! More importantly, here is a list of their victims in Bowl Games in that period. Virginia Tech, Miami, Florida and Tennessee. A Whos Who of opponents that they ran roughshod over. If you count the Sixty Plus points they tallied against Big Ten Tri Champ Northwestern. Michigan had NO offense and would have had a horrible time trying to score against Nebraska's defense. Charles Woodson would have been laid on his back over and over by our big tight ends. Nebraska wins by 14 points against Michigan in 1997.

Nebraska was the superior team. Michigan struggled to beat Ryan Leaf. Nebraska throttled Peyton Manning & Jamal Lewis. Also, the Big 10 was exposed as hot garbage in the Bowl games. Michigan's Big 10 opponents went a combined 0-6 in Bowl games, losing by an average of 19+ points.

Osborne should not have retired. The 1998 season would have been a rebuilding year, but he most likely would have won another in 1999 and possibly 2000. Frank Solich wasn't half the coach Osborne was, and he still only lost three games combined in those two seasons.

@@gregorycampbell1432 - oh? Michigan top ranked defense. Nebraska 5th. Nebraska number one offense in the nation. Michigan? 44th. That doesn't bode well for you, at all. Las Vegas also felt this way, and stated that if the game had been played, Nebraska would have been a 14 point favorite going into the game. Nebraska was the more complete team. Michigan should never have leapfrogged Nebraska to number one mid-seasons, Nebraska never lost a game.

Einreb: What do you mean "hang with all other college teams?" Are we talking about hanging out with USC and Ohio State at parties? I'm not sure what you mean by deserve either. No college football fans deserve anything. The players and coaches are the ones putting in the work. Do Nebraska fans think we can be at least a top 25 team maybe a consistent top ten program? Well, yeah, considering we were pretty close to top ten under Pelini recently and surely if Wisconsin and K-State can have that type of success so can Nebraska. I don't think most people expect Nebraska to get back to the top but no one thought Alabama would get there again. If Nebraska gets the right guy with the type of support and resources in the program they can get there. But I'm not sure who you're talking to or where you think you're getting your info from other than just perception. Every Nebraska fan I've seen knows we are awful right now but we hope we can still at least be good again soon or should we just lower our standards and be happy to win a few games? That's the loser way and gets you nowhere.

More than you. Also, notice that you've never heard any NFL coach or GM, then or now, refer to Peyton Manning as "overrated". Only fanboys & talking heads who fail to realize it's a TEAM sport spout such nonsense. Trent Dilfer won more Super Bowls than Dan Marino. No sane person would even suggest that Dilfer was somehow better. Defense, special teams, rushing attack, offensive line and coaching all affect how successful a QB will be.
