1998 Porsche 911 Carrera S Review Driving The Last Analog Air Cooled Porsche 911. The Porsche 993 variant of the 911 was introduced in 1995 and was huge leap towards what we see today in the 992 platforms. Porsche incorporated a tactile power steering system, VarioRam induction and aluminum front and rear subframes with a sophisticated multi link rear suspension. This proved crucial for better handling, rear turn in rear steer effect and better ride quality over prior G Body and 964 models. Powered by a NA 3.6 lier flat 6 engine with 282hp and 250ftbs of torque mated to a 6 speed transaxle make this one of the best driving old school 911's today. The Porsche 993 is the last air cooled Porsche and the last of the modern classic iterations of the 911 platform. It is the perfect size inside and out and feels so analog and old school that purists have blown up the market on these older cars through the years that placed them into highly collectible status. I can tell you what the market is going to do. The market is going to make perfect cars that have computer operated everything and will drive and accelerate near flawlessly. So flawlessly that the inputs of the driver wont determine as much. They'll be automatic transmission also. No need for air cooling anymore. This Porsche made this way will never be made quite this way again. Over a 5 year period prices will go up or down depending on whatever. In 50 years you'll pay a kings ransom to own one. In 150 years only the super rich can own something like this. Count how many people there are on the planet it's increasing. Every year the number of these cars decreases. Be it from a car accident, break down, or some other calamity. That means as time goes on fewer and fewer of these originals will exist. Certain colors and interiors become more rare. They can print more dollars at the treasury, and they will. They will not print more of these.

Nice. I've a 1996 993 C2 iris blue metallic, 66,000 miles, 6-speed manny tranny, varioram, LSD. No CEL, no oil leaks. Multi-show full-concours winner. I'm never selling it.

Have the same exact car, Ocean blue metallic with grey interior C2S, They threw in the turbo body on the regular Carrera and called it C2S for the first time at no charge! Bought new in 1997, keeper!

Back when the turbo came out that, that was the model I wanted back at 98 what was it 993 turbo silver the same rims that this guy has, my other buddy also had a 76 stroked it out to a 3 L i’d love to see more videos on this car Phil!,.. so crazy to see the turbos skyrocket!

So I was in my senior year of high school when the last air cooled models came out in fact I remember Jerry getting the last one if I’m correct, my buddy has a couple Porsches 996 turbo and a GT three but coming back to this car is still timeless to me even though it felt like it was just yesterday this car came out you know what I mean?

The 993 was introduced in Europe in 1994. Power steering was introduced in the 964.

I have one of these cars (1997 C2S) It is everything he says and more. I'm 69 but feel like an 18-year kid every time I drive it. I can't wipe the smile off my face. The car has VarioRam, not VarioCam. Substantial difference when you hit 5000 Rpm.

Buddy got a 97 C2S with turbo tail and the turbo twist wheels for college graduation - it was the Brumos car at the NY autoshow in 1997. Black/motorsound package - sold it for what he paid for it after 18k miles of driving and 5 years old.

930 Turbo is a fav of mine as well but they are very rough to drive where as the 993 still feels old but bearable for long stints on backroads without being exhausted afterwards. still love all the older 911 more than the new stuff

depends on condition to be honest but the 98 Carrera S are ranging from $170k for a car that needs work to well over 200k for the best examples. Go back to the 09 recession these were $50k cars lol

Guess you’re part of the younger generation who prefers cars that almost drive themselves but older cars are for purists and the collector market values prove how desirable they still are today. Nothing wrong with the new stuff but older stuff requires more effort to enjoy and for many thats all part of the fun

Most of those engineers are probably floating around heaven now. I guess i have just reached the point where i have let go of the past. Great videos though.

I get it i have clients who feel same regarding older cars and effort to own, drive and maintain them but i have others who spend millions on Singers and classics it all depends what you like. Trend is as most modern cars are overloaded with tech the market shows all affluent buyers scooping up older cars for insane prices still. We fully restored and modified this 993C2S and it drives so incredibly now
