For 96 and 97 and 98 models you also need to change the console mount bracket to a 99 and 00 bracket as well as the e brake tub that is under the handle will make the installation easier since you didn't install the bracket

I paid $60 for the center console and an additional $10 for the E-brake. I found it on the Facebook Marketplace where someone local was parting out a 2000 4Runner

You dont have to trim and cut anything, as long as you get the bracket to the newer one it fits perfect. I put it in my 4runner with no problem.

I did mine few weeks ago on my 97 what I hate about the dash cup holder is it weakens the dash pannel and puts stress on all the dash clips

Not with the ebrake smack dab in the middle. You don't need a cup holder for cans, just squish an open can under/beside the ebrake.

If you would have used the 1999-2002 center console metal mount, you would have not to trim the plastic pieces or drill holes. Great video.

Hey Ryan, great video man! I got a 98 2-wheel drive and I'm going to do this mod tomorrow or Tuesday and I'm not sure can I reuse my 98 emergency break or do I need one from a 99 through 02? My daughter one came out of a 2000 and I'm not sure if I got the emergency brake I may have. Thanks again Ryan!!

Saroun Sam Unfortunately not, the plastic insert with the cupholder is a different size than the the original one

Why would you want to change those cup holders? I have the 99 Hilux Surf which is basically the same as your 3rd gen 4Runner, i would much prefer the cup holders that pull out of the dash.

They're really awful in every way lol. No upside to them. They block your AC ducts, your clock, your AC controls and they're guaranteed to spill anything they hold because they're up high and not very sturdy. Obviously I can still use them if I wanted to but by doing the cupholder mod you lose nothing and gain 2 very usable cupholders and a lot of extra storage.

Yeah i guess there are upsides to it, my clock is dead, the A/C i dont use too often anyway, prefer open window, and the spilling i would use a flask. I do like the storage between the seats i guess. For keys.

Metallirocks my clocked stopped working also I removed the whole plastic. And just disconnect it and made sure it was on good and it works fine now. Very easy look up a video on it.

The center console part came from a different vehicle? How is it already molded with cup holders in it??

It came from a 2001 4Runner that was being parted out. 1996-1998 don't have that center console. Model years '99-'02 do have them so you just need to find someone parting out their 99-02 or you can even go on eBay and look at salvage yards.

Unfortunately The cupholder portion won't fit in the old center console that's why you gotta do the whole swap

You're a 4R god! Both the driver and backseat cup holders in my 96 SR5 are busted and I can't bear to spend money replacing such useless pieces of plastic. I will be spending that money on the parts needed for this mod and I was just wondering, could I drill out my own button placements on the new center console somewhere..?

Thank you! I'm glad the video helped you out. I'm sure you could drill custom holes in the new console but there isn't really a good place for them. It's not that hard to get them on the left side of your steering wheel but you can play around with it and I'm sure you'll find a spot you like for them. Best of luck!

kkk Autozone $7.99 hold 2 cups between driver seat and panels....Go thru all this mean to me...more broken olastic parts and increase more repar money keep in mind..all plastic parts are costly and not so many people can do like that specially me....I can take everything aparts but put together.....don't ask me .kkkk

There are a lot of good cup holder options to add on from autozone but this upgrade is pretty great if you have the time and patience to put it together. I would say it's 100% worth it but I get what you mean about not wanting to break things
