Both are excellent but, the older one is lighter on the wallet and easier to repair. Prefer less electronics!

@@flight2k5 They only have a computer/ECU that controls fuel injection and sensors for check engine maintenance warnings. They're still very simple and made easier to work on having the sensors help find issues. Not like today were all these little computers are programed to fail after 150k and make it harder for you to perform self repairs. Even the brakes are electronic now wtf

@cameronnorton5898

@Militant 541 The toyota 22R and 22RE were notorious for timing chain problems.
@cameronnorton5898
@cameronnorton5898 4 жыл бұрын
@Militant 541 What I usually see is that people will maintain timing belts but will neglect maintenance on timing chains. I know it's annecdotal, but I can't even count how many older cars and trucks come in the shop because the factory chains were stretched and causing timing issues. I also have swapped engines for people who had theirs destroyed by timing chain failure. Suffice it to say, it's not a fault of the technology; but rather neglect by the owner.

@Militant 541 And by the way, I have the engine in this video which is a 4-cam non-interference engine with a timing belt. 411,000 original miles on a 24 year old motor. Seems okay to me 🤷‍♂️

Good video. I bought a 2015 Toyota Tacoma with the TRD off-road package. My friends are all full size Ford fans and yes they all have the full size Fords. They made a lot of fun of me until we went off roading. They found out their big heavy trucks could not keep up with my little Tacoma. They couldn't go places my Tacoma to go. I was the one who had the last laugh. I had to pull two of them out of the mud with my little Tacoma. LOL

Older pickups are less dependent on computers and more on the driver, and less electrical components to breakdown or malfunction. '93 Toyota pickup dlx 4x4 still running at 351,000. It's my go to for rough terrain off roading because it has a shorter wheel base with better clearance and departure/approach angles than my '13 Toyota Tacoma TRD off road.

I'd take the old one simply for the ease of repair. Plus a lighter truck generally will get through muddy conditions not scraping the undercarriage as heavily. Too bad we can't buy a new mini 4X4 truck like that anymore. SUV's are the only alternative if one wishes to remain under 3000lbs.

2nd gen is the perfect balance between the old and new. I bought an 06 RWD tacoma in 2013 and drove it for 9 years. After much searching I found a 15 trd offroad access cab with a manual transmission. Put new suspension, wheels and tires on it and IMO now have a better truck than if i were to walk into a dealership and buy brand new.

They don’t make trucks like the first gen Tacoma’s. Yeah they ride like a lifted skate board but they are LIGHT and not wide like the new ones. Plus their proven reliability and ease to work on. Love the comparison but wished this included some treacherous trails. I’d take my first gen Tacoma over the new ones any day. If I wanted a truck that big I’d just step up and buy a Sierra 1500 🤷🏼‍♂️.

On head room-possibly I’m just too used to my F150 but when I went to test drive a Tacoma it felt incredibly cramp to just get into and my seating position had my head practically touching the headliner. I’m going back when they have one in that has a glass moon roof to see if it affords any more space but as it stands now I’m too big at 5’10.5”. Also, I haven’t test driven yet but the scoop on the hood blocks a lot of your field of vision looking forward. I believe the TRD Off-road deletes the scoop though.

Is The old Tacoma a TRD OFF ROAD?
@petuniacar
@petuniacar 2 жыл бұрын
Amazing that the older Taco keeps up with an outfitted TRD Taco just fine! Even though I don't think it seems like a fair fight on paper. Why not outfit a new Taco to be as close as the older one and see what happens

huh neat the new Tacoma runs the same size i run on my 2005 Dodge Dakota, 265/70r16s stock would be 245 for me, that little bit taller tires definitely helps clearance without a lift

In the Pro trim the new truck can tow at least 6400lbs. And the heart of this truck is not the shocks. It’s the drivetrain and overall build quality. The Fox shocks are ok. But let’s not make them out to be more than they are.

I'll keep my 2004 double cab 4WD until it falls apart. I hate how obese the 05+ Tacomas are, Toyota truck reputation was made on the compact pickups, bring them back! You might as well just buy a Tundra if you want a new Tacoma because they're so close in size but you get more truck for the money in a Tundra plus a V8 which is nice as the new 3.5 V6 Tacoma is a joke compared to the old 3.4 and 4.0 from the respective first and second generations.
@ryangump9527
@ryangump9527 5 жыл бұрын
sort of an unfair comparison, you're using the highest trim level Toyota can offer for the brand new Tacoma, yet you're using what seems to be a baseline model of the '98 first-gen, probably not even TRD either. still a good video though.

Way better than the 3.slow, I don't care for timing belts. My collection includes a 85 reg cab, 86 reg cab, 86 4 runner, 88 ext cab and 09 Taco. IMO a truck should ride like a truck, not a car; I don't expect the modern pluses from my second generation Toyota's that I get out of my 09 Taco. However I don't beat on my Taco like I do my other Toyota's. It does pull my trailer hauling one of my other trucks to play and bring it home in comfort, usually the other Toyota gets broken so it doesn't offer a ride home. I could never play hard if I had to drive it home, however once I got my Taco I could beat on my other Toyota's and it didn't matter if they broke because all I had to do is get it back on the trailer. Being a certified diesel technician I fix my own junk, I have one for the beach, one for the mountains and one for the mud. I'm still looking for a 87 and a 89 so I can have every year of the second generation, just because. I also own 4 Fords so my yard looks like a used car lot, what can I say it's a mechanic thing.

I wasn't sure about 89, that's cool though because that's one less year I have to buy. My 88 extended cab has that piece of junk 3.slow, I would have preferred the 22RE. I have inclinometers for every second generation I own, I have 3 solid front axles a few transmissions and transfer cases and a assortment of driveshafts. Just a few things on the farm. To be honest I'm really not sure exactly what it is about the second generation trucks, I just really like those trucks. So thanks for clearing that up for me, I don't buy every Toyota I look at, most have been run hard and put up wet; Parts trucks at best. I don't buy junk and I'm happy to pay a fair price for a truck. Check it, I got a Toyota E'locker with a "Modified front housing" on Ebay for $230 in Marionet Ga. I live in Virginia. The dick head canceled the auction because nobody bid on his shit. Because he wasn't willing to ship. He relisted the third member and "Modified axel housing" again, I won the auction for $130 and drove to Ga to get it. He seemed a little disappointed when I told him the housing was junk; All I wanted was the E locker. I have a pair for my 86, I'm gonna call the two buttons my "F#$k you I'm going through there" buttons, while it seems a bit long winded; I can have 1 front and 1 rear wheel off the f$%&ing ground, and my junk will keep pullin. Plus it has a stereo that would make a black man jealous. Not sure if I mentioned the 800+ HP heart. A lot of time and a lot of money have gone into this project. See I almost achieved "Redneck" status, The directions to my house include "Leave the paved road" Yet I fell short because I didn't have a 40K 4X4, Ain't that a b&#%h?; So I started building.

I'm thinking of buying a 1st Gen Tacoma TRD OR. Obviously those trucks are super reliable. But do you guys think it's a safe bet here 15-20 years later? If the engines have less than 200k miles on it and were taken care of right, will it still last me another 10 years after I buy it? What about the automatic transmissions on them? I would go for the manual but I need a Double Cab and they only came with Automatics.

Why do you buy a truck? For comfort? Then buy a cadillac. Want it to work? Keep the pickup with a bullet proof 22r or 22re.

@@lassaut6794 I would buy a used truck for small time work, and small time off reading, and buy an Accord pre 2008 for regular commuting. Commuting in a truck which uses more gas and lower resale value is just beyond me.

If Toyota is good enough for drug dealers and ISIS Toyota is good enough for me (I have a 2002 Tacoma). My first Toyota pick up was a 1987 when it was just known as a Toyota "pick up." It was stolen in 2016, and I have seen video of my truck in Syria with a 50 cal. mounted in the bed. I know it's mine because of the Cub Scout sticker on the front passenger fender and the dent in the driver's side front fender, plus it's blue.

It would have been nice to see real world stock off-road comparisons between the two. Frankly this sounded more like an infomercial for the TRD Pro. I don't really know ANY Tacoma owners who care much about comfort except for a few females.

I hate the front ends in the newer Taco. There is so much unneeded bulbous crap everywhere. You could saw a foot off of the new Tacoma and not hit an important component. 1st gen is such a better off roader. Reg cab 1st gen over ridiculous double cab sucky wheelbase 2nd gen any day.
