I am desperately trying to find one for my wife that hasn't been modded all to hell, And has relatively low kilometers. And I can't find one for under 10k Canadian. And keep in mind some of the ones we looked at are 2000 - 1997 model year. It's crazy!

Stop at a Transmission shop and ask them what they see the most and the least, I did this 2 months ago. Guys told me they had 5 newer Chevy's in last week and that the Fords & Chryslers were no better. When I asked them what they see the least both of them said in unison, Toyota. TRUE STORY !!!

consumer reports do rate the tundra as the most reliable, but asking a transmission shop that services all makes is a bad way to judge if the question is what you see more. the big 3 sell over 500k of their half tons each year. Toyota barely breaks over 100k a year in sales for the tundra. Obviously, independent repair shops will see less tundras than other half tons that outsell it 5 to 1

I am struggling to choose between the both. I like the look, maintenance cost and in city commute practicality of Tacoma more. But Tundra wins in terms of comfort and size. I am 6 foot over 300 lbs and hate when passengers or myself are cramped inside sardines in a can. Like Tacoma but I guess Tundra is a better purchase because if it is not comfortable inside, no way you gonna enjoy driving it. What is your insight? Can you suggest?

Charles Farley don't forget to turn off the traction control as well because if the tundra spins a little, the throttle management will kick in, it will shift as the engine backs off, and you will be in a higher gear when the throttle comes back on

I bought a used 2008 limited 5.7l tundra in Feb 2019 with 113k miles on it. ...now as of today it has 225kmiles. .drove to North Dakota mountain highways, Arizona I-10. Utah highway 6west ( with payload upto 1350lb on bed truck) . I have a 2008 Tundra with the 5.7 off-road package and it does great on everything but mileage on town. Gets about 20 on the highway and is incredibly dependable. My truck gets rallied and off roaded as much as you can off road a stock truck and the Bilstein shocks do amazing with the off road package.

Slingsomelead back in 2007, the Tundra outdid every full size half ton in a huge way. It pulled more, braked harder, rode better, drove better, had more room, built better and was more innovative. People didn't buy it back then because brand loyalty. That brand loyalty comes from decades of full size truck ownership no matter the brand. Its pretty much the same concept in the small truck marker. The big boys didnt have anything worth a damn to compete with the small Japanese trucks back in those days and when Chevy marketed an Isuzu, Chrysler marketed a Mitsubishi and Ford marketed a Mazda as their own trucks, Toyota was wiping the floors with the lesser trucks. That's why you can't convince truck buyers as easily.

A 2012 Tacoma TRD Sport 4X4 V6, a 2001 Tacoma TRD Off Road, a 2014 Tundra Supercharged and an 09 Tacoma XRunner Supercharged. I bought a '17 Tacoma, I used it to tow a Uhaul (heavy) from BC to NB...then the very next year, back again. I had no issues, no mechanical problems in all that time, and simply had to do an oil change. Runs beautiful and it is hands down the best truck I've ever owned for what I need it for. My only complaint....I can't get my sled up on it.

To win with the Tacoma you turn on the ECT Power, at dead stop hold Traction Control Button for 5 seconds until it says off on the dash then use the manual stick which is in all new Tacomas. Do that and it flys... I know been a Tacoma owner for 17 years.

With the stock tires and a bed cover I have had up tp 21.5 mpg at 70 mph all highway, no traffic with the Tundra crew max -5.7 / 2 WD, lost 3 mpg going to wider tires and a lumber rack.

As to the drag race...I have a Tundra and my wife has a Tacoma...with my icon suspension and bigger tires the Tacoma feels quicker. Tundra sounds better though. A major difference from my perspective that they do not mention, aside from the interior space and comfort/headroom, is the the seat position. In the tundra you sit upright with your legs "under" you. Both my wife and I find this more comfortable. You sit much lower with your feet "out" (like a car). Not sure if I am clearly explaining this but it is very noticeable.

Thanks for the ride guys! I rode in a new Tacoma and it seemed like the automatic transmission was always "hunting" for a gear. This was around Denver. Not sure what that was about. Drove a Tundra from Flower Mound Texas to Monterey California and found the Tundra very comfortable on the trip but that big boy is thirsty like my 2003 F-150. Appreciate the demos!

As transmission get more gears, they do shift more often. Its just the nature of them. If you are used to an old 4 sp auto, they don't shift often because the gears are very wide. Go drive a new F150 with a 10sp and you will see that it constantly shifts. But its not a bad thing, just keeps the engine in the proper rpm for efficiency and power (depending on conditions)

I"m sure the new Ford 10 speed is always shifting. It does help with fuel economy I'm sure but I can bet those transmissions won't see 200K miles. 6 speeds seems to be a good number I think. I don't think an auto needs more than that. 4 was the standard for years and worked well. GM's 4l60 was a great transmission.

I've found that if you're having issues like that, hit the ECT button and it'll drive how you expect. I usually turn on the ECT when i'm in traffic / town.

I love my Taco TRD Off Road... I think these trucks appeal to two different types of buyers. For me, I live in an urban environment, so parking is so much easier with the mid size than full size truck. The MPG upgrade is appreciated, but no one buys a truck so they can get good gas mileage. My truck is perfect for hauling things recreational things as well as my our DIY trips to Home Depot in Lowes. The Taco's off road capability, as well as accessory support, makes this vehicle awesome for a get out of town and into nature weekender or day trips. We are moving back to the East Coast in September, so I will definitely be using the 4WD more. I'm 5'11", and if I was taller than 6'2"... I would go with the Tundra. To me the sitting position on the Taco is probably my harshest criticism. I really don't like how I feel getting in and out of my truck. The transmission is geared to take advantage of the Atkinson Cycle engine for a couple of points in fuel economy. It is plenty enough power for my driving habits, but if you want to get on it, ECT and the manushift mode will be your friend. I don't think any of these trucks or perfect, what truck is? However, I buy vehicles brand new and drive them for 10 years, Toyota's durability, reliability, and resale value made Tacoma the best buy for my dollar. I look forward to creating memories of adventures in this truck for the next decade!

Yesterday Toyota loaned me a 2018 Tacoma (with 2,000 mile) to drive while my Camry was getting the dashboard replaced (recall). It was the bumpiest ride I have ever experienced in any truck, including clunkers from 20 years ago. It also had a loud tinny sounding muffler and the engine seemed to gasping for power, when accelerating after a red light. I don't drive fast. What a terrible experience. On the positive side, the ac was very cold. I'm so spoiled with my Camry:)

I will have to disagree with your opinion on the ECT in the Tacoma. Whenever I tow up steeper hills, get on to a highway with a trailer, or want better acceleration I do find better results with the ECT. That being said, I am also at sea level which may help as well. For the best acceleration in Toyota Tacomas I found that putting the truck into sport (allows you to change gears) as well as having the ect on which basically allows the engine to be in a lower gear for more torque gave me pretty good acceleration.

I've owned 4 Toyota 4x4 pickups since 1993: '93 DX Xcab V6, '04 Taco TRD, '16 Taco TRD, '18 Tundra 5.7L SR5. I bought the smaller trucks (after T100/Tundra was available) for offroad ability and better fuel economy. I got (mixed) 15-16 mpg in the '16 Taco, and now ~12 mpg in the Tundra. Since making the switch, I doubt I'll ever go back to the Taco. Circumstances have changed. I'm on two wheels offroad now (new trucks are too expensive for serious offroad use/abuse), I don't have to drive as much as I used to, and have more disposable income, so MPG doesn't matter as much as it once did. I love the extra space (inside and out) and V8 in the Tundra. My 4x4 Tundra was under $40K, then I added Bilstein 6612s for for a 2.5" level lift, a nice set of tires/wheels, the awesome TRD dual exhaust, and bed rails/mat, for a total of ~$44K, and I'm very happy with the suspension (I've modded suspensions on 3 of the 4 pickups). At first I missed the keyless ignition in the Taco (excepting the fact the proximity sensor only opened the drivers door), but I guess no one will be starting the Tundra with a code reader. Hearing people parrot the "Toyota should overhaul the Tundra" line never gets old...Toyota have improved this truck gradually and significantly, and I believe they have made the right call as far as development. The have a great package that is a far superior value to anything else in it's segment, and not needlessly bowing to media pressure for an "overhaul" it doesn't need makes me appreciate Toyota even more. I wonder exactly how much an expensive re-design would ad to the price? This step should be taken when there are real practical gains to be made. Yes, there are flashier interior available, and if interior cosmetics are high on your list of truck priorities, go buy something else. Meanwhile, search "million mile Tundra" then explain the practical reasons Toyota "needs to overhaul" this truck...the only one I can think of is fuel ecomony, and if there were means to real gains without sacrificing power, durability, and towing, Toyota would have done it by now. The Atkinson system on my Lexus RCF may find its way to the Tundra V8, but if you want a ~ 3 ton truck that'll get out of it's own way, your gonna have to burn some gas. Either of these trucks are best in segment, the rest is personal preference, pragmatically determined by intended use.

The window is only on the CrewMax version of the Tundra (for the latest gen). You can't have a longer bed and the rear window :(. Double cab is plenty of legroom in the Tundra and the longer bed is appreciated if you actually use your truck like a truck. The window is awesome though. Tilt the sunroof and crack that rear window a bit and you get perfect airflow that won't mess your hair ;). Being able to have all the windows open is pretty cool too. Wish they had a button that opened them all at once. They really should put that window in the Tacoma so it better matches the 4Runner and Tundra. Give the Tacoma that rear window and a bit more rear legroom (the Rav4 has better legroom than the Tacoma which is total BS) and I'd buy one in a heartbeat. I tried sitting in the back of a Tacoma and it was an immediate nope. I swear the Corolla has more legroom too. It's damn cramped back there. In a Tundra I can have a child seat in the middle and adults can sit on either side comfortably. Tacoma you could fit one adult and one child seat.

I owned both trucks, the Tacoma first and the Tundra second. In my opinion for an around town vehicle the Tacoma is tops. I am 6'2 and didnt mind the small cab. It made it seem like a sports car. I would never have traded it except that we use our truck for road trips. In that case the Tundra wins hands down. One thing we discovered on a trip with the Tacoma out in West Texas was a moaning noise from the wind across the mirrors that got very aggravating. The speed limit in West TX. is 80 MPH and it was windy, so we got some wind, but that more than anything caused me to trade up to Tundra. You could crack the window amd it would stop but who wants to listen to that noise! One other point, this Tacoma was my 3rd and I never had a problem with any of them. My son totaled the 1st and I traded the 3rd to the Tundra. The second I bought and drove it a while, gave it to my oldest who gave it to his brother then I drove it again until 125k. I sold it to a coworker who drove it for 6 more years and 65k who recently sold it to his landscaper. In all that time and over 220,000 miles it had 1 sensor go out that cost 100.00 to fix.

I just bought a 2018 SR5 Tacoma and I love it so far. I used to drive a 1999 Sedan and I love how much better it feels even for a midsize truck, it feels bigger than the Nissan Frontier, and it’s not even a full size pickup. It has 4x4 which I have yet to test in the snow . Fell in love with my Tacoma from the website pictures . Even better in person !

Looking at this older video. I have a 2007 regular cab short box tundra 5.7 l and love it! Plenty of room inside not knocking elbows with your passenger and in this configuration it drives and parks like a go cart. And I still have room for 2 x10” subs straight up behind the console😊

I just tested it on a 1,112 round mile trip from NE OH to the mountains of NC. I had about 450lbs of gear and two passengers. I averaged 16.5 down with no tow/haul, I averaged 17.2 home in tow/haul. The truck is an ‘18 TRD Sport CM. The tow/haul was great in the mountains, held the gear longer and the pedal sensitivity made it easy to keep the truck at the perfect speed.

As an added asset, the ECT button allows you to customize performance when you need a little more power. When you press the ECT button, the transmission will sharpen throttle response and adjust the rpm levels at which the transmission shifts.

I just bought a 2002 tundra limited 4.7v8 with 204k miles on it because I am a hard working man with a family and can't afford a new truck. With that being said it's new to me and has not one flaw. It's dry and clean underneath and probably never seen a dirt road until now, no dents, no rust, everything works, tons of room to do any repairs if it ever needs them. I wouldn't be scared to go start it up right now and drive to china. It has aftermarket 20" wheels and an aftermarket audio system but, other than that everything is factory. I'll be keeping this one for a very long time. A true diamond in the rough.

I have owned both. The Tacoma when i was single and just needed a truck for me and my small fishing boat. And now the Tundra for my family and bigger boat. The Tundra took some getting used to but I love it now and wouldn’t trade it for any other truck. The active brake assist has saved my ass once so far. I’m so glad i have it.

Even though the Tundra is the oldest of the pack, I still think it's one of the better looking trucks on the street, next to the Raptor. The exterior has aged well and the small design changes they've made along the way go a long way. The interior is another matter, it looks old and cheap. RAM probably has the nicest interiors. It's a toss up for me between GM/Ford followed by the Nissan Titan and the Tundra in a very distant last place. If I was looking for a new full size truck today and wanted the best value, I'd probably be looking at a Titan. It's new, has a nice engine, the Pro 4X is very capable off road and their lackluster sales probably means there are great deals to be had.

Yeah the only issue with the Titan, at least back when I was looking was they loved to blow up rear differentials due to overheating...I think that's fixed now or at least I'd hope so LOL...but that's why I bought the Tundra over the Titan, damn near got the 08 Titan instead of my 08 Tundra, but with that overheating differential issue that was a no-go for me....course the Tundra isn't without issues either, front differential howl/growl due to bad bearings, rear axle bearings failed, water pump, and the front end and rear axle bearings were failing again when I sold the truck. Stuff that should never fail so early on in a supposedly "heavy duty" truck.

I bought an 89 toyota pickup and it had head valve gasket problems. At 150 thousand miles they checked it out and found out my heads were pitted from water leaking by a faulty gasket. Toyota rebuilt the engine free. Love them guys and will always be a toyota man.

Real world avg in R.I. for my Tacoma is 21.5 mpg. Best mileage is between 40 and 55 mph due to the Atkinson cycle engine. My Tacoma is dcsb TRD off road 4x4.

I’ve actually been faced with this dilemma. I love the Tacoma but when I priced out the TRD Road package for each of them there was only $2000 in the difference because of sales and incentives on the Tundra. I also haul a lot of lumber and sheet goods around so the Tundra was a no brainer. I’ve driven it for 4 years and not a single issue but when life slows down a bit, I’m going to get a Tacoma.

That right there is one of the main reasons I bought the 08 Tundra...that and the real world fuel economy between the 2 is pretty nonexistent, once you hookup a trailer fuel economy is out the window regardless what vehicle it is. Plus the Tacoma still only offers a V6 and its not a little Toy anymore, its grown considerably in size and in fact its the same size as the 1st generation Tundras & the T100. The 1st gen Tundra had a V8, so there's no damn excuse Toyota couldn't be putting their 4.6L V8 in them as the standard engine because that V6 gets terrible fuel economy and the V8 is about the same as the V6 in economy in the real world. Yep the ridiculous price on the Tacoma really persuaded me to not even look at them and jumped into the Tundra instead. Would I buy another Tundra, not until they wake up and build a 3/4 or 1 ton.

Most comparison videos are apples to apples. It's nice to see apples to oranges comparisons. It's the simple fact that most people don't realize that they don't need 'full-size' capability, and might be better off with a mid-size. Comparing both in the same video will help show that...especially if TFL shows them in real-world daily-use scenarios, like taking both trucks into crowded parking lots, tight drive-thrus, ATM's that are lower than the truck window, etc. I love the Ike Gauntlet videos, but to be real, most people aren't hauling a trailer @ max GVWR up a mountain, they're hitting MickeyD's drive-thru on the way to the office.

I just got rid of my 2017 tundra for a 2017 Tacoma. I didn’t really need the tundra anymore and the fuel milage was killing me. They are both great trucks. The Tacoma is super capable off-road. The ECT button works for me, it keeps the truck from shifting into 6th while driving around town. The large rear window in the tundra started to creek at about 5 thousand miles whenever the tundras chassis would flex, like when your going into a driveway. If your a diehard Toyota person like I am and need a truck the tundra is great for towing and the Tacoma’s a great truck for off-roading and better milage.

The Tundra is a niche truck. If you want a truck with an amazingly reliable old school style v8, big rear axle, and tall gears, the Tundra is a great option. It will outwork anything else on the market in the half ton class.

I almost made the mistake of trading my 2013 Tundra for a 2016 Tacoma. They wanted 3K down and my truck. I was like are you kidding me? Now I'm 9 payments away to fully owned it. The Tacoma are nice but the cab are too small. I had my 5' 8" dad sitting on the backseat and he hated it. It also fell pretty slow riding it.

In my opinion, I actually prefer the first generation Tundra(00-06) like the one you have over the current one. The new one is nice but your Tundra to me is the Goldilocks of pickup trucks which is not too big or not too small just the right size for most people. Plus, the 4.7 V8 is simply bullet proof.

Have a 2012 tundra and never had an issue. 105k miles. Zero rust Buddy has a 2015 dodge and rusting box side in a few spots and bumper is full of rust. Always has issues.

I cannot wait to get my Tacoma next month! Although I may end up just waiting on the 2019s to come out, just depends on inventory in my area. As far as size/comfort goes, I'm a 5'7" girl and I've test driven the truck and found it really comfortable for me personally. I've heard that critique from a lot of taller/larger guys. I'm coming out of a 1998 Jeep Cherokee that recently hit 200,000 miles, so I'm extremely excited for my first brand new vehicle. It's going to be a drastic change for me. Fortunately, the mileage is very similar to my XJ so I wouldn't be destroying my bank account trying to fuel the thing.
