This video help me to replace the water pump on my 1997 K1500 4.3. Not quite the same but close enough. One whack (or two) on the fan nut didn't do it for me. I kept at it for 5 minutes and grabbed the belt to help it stop moving but finally got it. The hardest part was getting the bolts started on the replacement pump, it's tight and down low on the 4.3. TYVM.

Very helpful, I am in the UKL and have a right hand drive export model which developed a water pump leak. I thought at first I would have trouble getting shoud off because of Air Con pile but I just gently tweeked it out the way no proble nor was removing the fan, I didnt have the right spanner so I clamped a pair of mole (vice) grips on to the flange and a couple of sharp taps with a hammer and it was off. Thanks for posting/

Good video; nice work. Add: bolts should be checked/re-tightened once warmed up to temp. One other thing folks may find is that the system may have to be burped more than once to get all the air out; a good idea is to get the passenger front higher than the driver's front when burping.

Nice info video. I have yet to tackle this project, I'm pretty sure my 209k water pump is original, but no leaks. I too, thought about removing the fan, still there for the time being. My question though is, what kind of pulley is that in place of your A/C compressor pulley? The A/C on mine is no longer either, but I kept the compressor in place for the sake of the belt.
@Turbo23113 жыл бұрын
@kolbpilot I would do the auxiliary fan...they can be had for about 100 bucks, you'd only need a manual on/off switch if you are pretty much the only driver, but mechanical fans are loud and annoying. This truck is an eastern seaboard truck and did fine, but with no AC and not a lot of hot city driving, it was no issue. My 1991 S-10 2.8 also had the fan removed, but it had AC and I used a cheap fan to pull air across the condenser, it was more then enough.

@c1rca121 Not yet...have one in the Caprice now, but not for the truck. Access to the freeze plug is crazy awful...will probably sacrifice a line water heater first and see if I can escape with that before attempting to do a block one. I have purchased it, but man, it's hard access.

Its ok. I had it on my previous car and my father has it on his 2000 S-10. Does it add anything? Not really, maybe a bit louder at WOT. It does tend to soil the MAF sensor, I generally have to clean the sensor every year.

@kolbpilot Not sure...my truck never came with AC, so its just the factory idler pulley.

I hope you like Alberta, Ben. I live in Lethbridge. If you live in Calgary you'll want that fan to keep the engine cool in city traffic. Summers at high latitude have long days, but here on the prairies we get our share of hot days as well. What's your day job?

You cut out the hardest part??? Keeping the pulley from spinning to enable the bolts to be removed.
@Turbo23113 жыл бұрын
@kolbpilot A bit of gas mileage and a bit of power...all that fan power goes to the drive train. You can do what you want, the fan will never wear out, they very seldom do. You'll find that even without a fan your truck really won't go over 170 if at all. Pretty much the only time it will is on a hot day with no breeze just idling. Any movement of air will cool the truck, even nose into the wind.
@Turbo23111 жыл бұрын
Impact it off bluntly with a wrench and hammer if you can't take it off smoothly. Its just a nut/bolt issue. I didn't include it as I removed mine long ago.
@Turbo23112 жыл бұрын
Impact is the way to go...a quick jerk or hit with a hammer will bust it free. Be sure to do it with the belt ON...to help with resistance.
@Turbo23113 жыл бұрын
@ownerbuilderpools Its not hard at all, just position yourself correctly and the drag of the belt will hold the pulley from spinning.
@Turbo23114 жыл бұрын
@TeDuaMalakie Kinda...I mean, nothing really seat of your pants feel, but of course, power not used to turn the fan heads to the rear wheels. We do it to all RWD cars we have...traditionally we put in an electric fan, but given the lack of AC, this didn't need one.
@Turbo23114 жыл бұрын
@spelunkerd I'm about an hour east of Red Deer in a pretty rural area. If I lived in the City, I'd agree with you, but any air movement, even when 30c (90F) will keep that truck cool but your right being stuck in traffic. Currently a museum curator, I'm moving back to my roots as a mechanical engineer in the oil fields/power industry.
@kolbpilot13 жыл бұрын
@Turbo231 If I ever did it, it would be to see if there would be a gas mileage improvement ? I'm guessing 1 mpg at best. The fan is noisy when the clutch is disengaged. But I figure for now, since the fan has lasted all those miles so far, who am I to disconnect it ? I don't know how accurate my water temp gauge is, but it sits at 170 steadily for normal operating temperature. I know the gauge goes higher for it will almost hit 200 before the thermostat opens & the gauge rapidly recedes.

can you see the seepage hole with the fan shroud in place? I have a fan on my S-10...would I be able to see this? I think mine is going out and think it might tell me what I need to know
@Turbo23112 жыл бұрын
Make sure the system has no air bubbles impeding flow, make sure your system didn't kick up some debris that slowed down the radiator, make sure everything is somewhat clean on the outside too. There should be plenty of cooling capacity on the S-10.
@Turbo23114 жыл бұрын
@TeDuaMalakie Oops...answered that from my other account. Standing in front of the truck looking at the engine, notice that cable that runs over the alternator to a round thing that looks like a soda can on it's right, between the alternator and the place where my AC compressor would be...that's the EGR motor. You can take it out and clean it, that may help you.
@kolbpilot13 жыл бұрын
@spelunkerd I guess I'll leave mine on then. I live on the eastern seaboard, high temps with humidity. I figured it would start to over heat with no fan when creeping through intersections in a city. Only other option would be an auxiliary electric fan.

I have a 2000 bravado same motor 4.3L Vortec, I just bought it, well everything was ok, we recently went threw a car wash & ever since the belt has been noisy, I replaced a idler pully top pully, but still it is so noisy, the sound seems to be coming from the A/C pump, the belt looks fairly new,, we also took the belt off and started it with the belt off, it was ok, but soon as the belt went back on, it start making noise, also once in awhile we smell coolant inside the bravada and hear water slushing around inside the dash. thinking about replacing the water pump & taking off the A/C unit & put a idler pully the way your is set up. Oh also thinking about replacing heater core.

@Turbo23112 жыл бұрын
No...I'd check the radiator for buildup first. If you have a new thermostat and your car is hot, that means that the cooling system isn't working hard enough to cool the hot water, check that first. If a water pump is turning, it's probably working.
@TeDuaMalakie14 жыл бұрын

No. The climate in Maine is cool...aka never really above 90F/30C. I also live in a very rural section, so stop and go traffic is minimal. The 4.3 runs pretty cool, the cooling system is rather large never have I had this truck ever go above 210. My 1991 with a 2.8L had the same deal, I had to let her sit once, the heater core was able to cool it down enough. That truck had AC, but I only ran it when she was moving.

Thanks for making a succinct no unnecessary bs video , proving to me it's as easy as I thought ( or hoped ) it would be. ...and owning a2003 s10 I can understand the idea of not needing a fan......the temp seems to ride very steadily at or around 200 no matter what time of year , or even up until just about all my coolant leaked out.......but i dont know the benefit for it being gone?

Well now I know what an A/C less 4.3 looks like. Removed my fan, no difference in winter overheating wise, in fact blocked the radiator 80% to enhance water temperature. Picked up maybe 1 to 2 mpg. Now that the weather is rapidly approaching 80 degrees the plexi-glass used to block the radiator has to come out, runs around 210 & higher when idling.
@Ryearthvl798310 жыл бұрын
I don't think the fan is only for air conditioner, it helps to keep the water temperature of the engine, that's probably why the water pump went out
@Turbo23110 жыл бұрын
Technically true. The radiator needs air to go across it to displace heat. That being said, the system is also large enough that it can go some time, especially in cooler climates, without needing air to cross it. Trucks without AC in colder climates don't really need a fan. Now, if you have AC, the condenser for sure needs a fan, but this truck does not. As for hot water temperatures causing water pump failure...um...no. This water pump never dealt with temperatures over normal rated.
@Turbo23112 жыл бұрын

I bought my chevy S10 4.3L in September, I flushed most of the cooling system ( I still can see some flakes in radiator and reservoir) last Friday because heating didn't work. Since I guess two days I saw a leak from under my car, so today I layed down under truck and it seems like gasket or the part you mentioned leaks. I can see large spot of antifreeze under my car. However can anyone explain to me how is that possible? Did I washed out something or what? And do I have to replace water pump or can I just pour some treatment product ? and I'm using DexCool that's probably the reason of flakes
