That Toyota GTONE is the Grandfather of every prototype we've seen at LeMans in the Coupe era of P1 cars. The Audi's Peugots Porsches and Rebellions can all trace their aerodynamic design theory to that car. That car was so far ahead of its time it's not funny. If you love variety in design, then there is no greater 24 hour of Le Mans in history than this. The coupe prototypes and open cockpit counterparts both vying for the overall win, the vast difference in design theory, and of course the insane pacing of this race in 1999 was a precursor to the all out sprints we see today. THIS is quite possibly the most important 24 hour of Le Mans ever run as it set the course of automotive history in prototype racing for the next 20 years into the modern era we saw until this year. Even the LMDh car is a form of the same design ethos as the GTONE.

If you watch the Toyota TS010 and the Peugeot 905 Lmp from 91-92 seasons you will see that the body desing (longtail) apeared before the GT-ONE. In fact this GT-ONE (TS020) is a continuation of the TS010 desing pilosophy... Also if you want to go even further back, watch the first desing of the Porsche 917.

Unbelievable driving by Bernd Schneider. How he kept up with those on-rails Toyotas is beyond me. The Mercedes wanted to leave the track at every corner and on every bump.

Yeah I must say it gets boring when it's American coverage and it's non stop Corvette / onboard / pitstops / interviews. I'm not saying all racing drivers are boring, man, compared to footballers they're positively fascinating, but can we please see the cars on the track?

In GT, there was not that much to cover. The Vipers ran away with it and the Porsche's broke down or fell behind. The new 996's actually did much better than most 993's wanted.

It’s a real shame Mercedes had their incidents as it could have been an absolutely awesome race between them Toyota and BMW over 24hrs. You had Toyota which were fastest, BMW who were the most economical and Mercedes who could just about keep up with the drivers absolutely wringing it’s neck.

It kind of bugs me if the copyright info is legitimately under FOX as SPEED, since this race aired when it was still SpeedVision. Before the days of FOX and NASCAR 24/7. The good days. I don't think FOX should get any credit for this glorious footage.

@marks71979 ай бұрын
It was purely down to the regulations at the time. The Pole lap in 1992 was around 3:21. The ACO dictate how fast they want the lap times effectively, so you can't compare like for like.
