Heading into the playoffs the San Antonio Spurs were prohibitive favorites to win it all. They had the experience, the chemistry, defense and a young Tim Duncan in his second season that would be the heir apparent to an aging David Robinson. After defeating the Timberwolves in four games, San Antonio's next opponent would be the young L.A. Lakers who were led by Shaquille O'Neal. A charismatic center that was in his 7th year and had failed to produce a championship despite being touted as "the most dominant". The Spurs were in complete control during this series and wound up sweeping the Lakers just as the Utah Jazz had done a year before. San Antonio would later advance to the NBA Finals where they captured their first championship and Duncan was named Finals MVP.
This series started a rivalry between Shaq & Duncan as both players would lead championship contenders heading into the new millennium. From 1999-07 either Shaq or Duncan would appear in the Finals and with the exception of '04, they would both end those series' as champions.
Many sports fans tend to have short term memories and can be prisoners of the moment. This would explain the questionable voting of Kobe Bryant as Player of The Decade despite not having the resume that Shaq or Duncan possessed and not being nearly as dependable in the postseason. It's understandable why people would vote for him. Kobe is more exciting to watch due to being a perimeter player who had the ability to score at a high rate and he was coming off his first championship run as the leader of the Lakers. Not to mention that by that point Shaq had declined significantly since the early '00's and Duncan (while still great) was not the same player. The fact still remains that his body of work was not as impressive as his contemporaries.
Combined achievements from 1999-07
8 championships
6 Finals MVP's
3 League MVP's
17 All-NBA Selections
12 All- Defensive Selections

+TheLegacyofWrestling You have to take into account what defenses they were facing and what their roles were. Shaq was being defended by David Robinson and had to deal with Duncan on the weak side while Tim was being guarded by Reid, Horry, Green, Grant, Walker and Medvedenko. Not to mention that Shaq's playoff games with Phoenix also dropped his average. Duncan got more out of his talent but Shaq was the better player.

LakersDynasty42 um. because he would foul out if he went head to head with duncan... i know because actually tried and it didn't work. and the times duncan guarded shaq, he wouldn't let him catch the ball that low. that was the key bacause shaq was dominant if he caught it in the paint.

squattystx I'm saying they faced different defenses so to compare their scoring stats and assists can be misleading without context. Shaq in his prime was never guarded by one player. He was constantly double and triple teamed.

Yep. Since the Spurs drafted Tim Duncan I was almost certain we would win the championship every year. That's how good the Spurs were. The only team that scared me was the Lakers. They had Kobe and Shaq and man I didn't like Kobe ( R.I.P) not like him personally but because he was so good. When I first saw him play I said man this dude is just like Jordan ( I didn't like Jordan either 😅. Those 2 teams gave us many years of joy. Utah was still a force too. They were the defending Western conference champions that year. Plus they had some dirty players on thier team. But definitely Spurs and Lakers ran the show from 99-2014. Somewhere around there 😅

Shaq was an incredible athlete but he doesn't have the same combination of intelligence, focus and leadership that Duncan has. Both are all time greats, though. One day in the future, we're all going to wonder, just like we do with Phil Jackson, what Gregg Popovich's career really means without Tim Duncan. Phil and Pop both have some amazing qualities that make them good head coaches, but it all starts with having that dominant big man on the court who buys into your system and keeps the team in line.

Duncan was a real PF and a real C. Not hatin' on KG just sayin'.

I have to say out of every San Antonio Spurs championship team(1999, 2003, 2005, 2007) the 1999 Spurs were my most favorite. Even though Duncan in 1999 wasn't as dominant all around as he was in 2003, he was still great, DRob was still effective in 1999 compared to 2003, plus I think the 1999 Spurs bench was more deep than in 2003, plus they had 15-2 playoff record in 1999 compared to a 16-8 playoff record in 2003.

@Israel-nb7ip

That's a pretty good comparison. I never thought of it but it makes complete sense the more you think about it. Duncan and Kareem is a comparison that makes a lot of sense. Kareem won early with an aging Oscar Robinson the way Duncan did with Robinson; Kareem won later in his prime and towards the end of his career with emerging hall of famers like Magic and Worthy, as did Duncan with Parker, Ginobili and Kawhi. Shaq was like Wilt too in that he was dominant from the beginning but couldn't get over the hump to beat great players like Hakeem, Stockton/Malone, prime Jordan until Phil Jackson came and Kobe matured. Wilt couldn't beat Russell outside of one time and got his 2nd ring on a great Lakers team with West and Goodrich. Wilt didn't get to play with a Kobe or Wade in their prime but other than that their careers are similar. Great comparison!

Shaq was the Mike Tyson of NBA history. Both cut of the same cloth. They were champions and are all time greats. Both never outperformed any prime all time greats when winning at their apex. A lot of career defining performances vs intimidated lesser foes/guys past their physical prime. All the guys that could score and rebound as good as he could (Hakeem Olajuwon, Karl Malone, Tim Duncan) ran both Shaq and his teams outta the playoffs. LakersDynasty42, the reason Kobe was voted player of the decade for the 2000s, he to me was the best player in the NBA, from 2002-03 through 2009-10 season. Clutch moments, game winning shots, 40 or more for 9 straight games, 35 or more for 13 straight games, 30 or more for 16 straight games, 4 straight 50 point games, 81 pts vs Toronto, 62 through 3 vs Dallas, league mvp, 4 rings, finals mvp, 3 all star mvps, and 10 fifty point games in a season. ANYONE that knows anything about basketball would agree that the Spurs playoff run in '99 FAR exceeded the Lakers run the following year. Spurs go 15-2, running off 10 consecutive at one point..in contrast, the Lakers lose EIGHT games in the 2000 Playoffs. We'll never know if San Antonio would have matched the Lakers regular season win total of 67, because of the lockout in '99..probably not, but, you must admit that the Spurs were greater in 1999 than L.A. was in '00.

That’s mainly because the Lakers faced a much tougher version of the Blazers and finals opponent in the Indiana Pacers. 1999 Blazers still have erratic Isiah Rider, who was good but inefficient. The Blazers traded him to the Hawks for Steve Smith and acquired Scottie Pippen from the Rockets in a trade for the 2000 season. The 1999 Knicks were an 8th seed and didn’t had Patrick Ewing in the finals which gave the Spurs Twin Towers an even bigger advantage. The 2000 Pacers were a 1st seed in the EC and were a better finals opponent than the 1999 Knicks.

Tim Duncan was true leader - I mean also mentally - from his first game to his last game in the League. Not LeBron, not Kobe, even not Jordan, you can be good player but not a good leader and Tim Duncan could win a team.

Imagine thinking Duncan’s a better leader than the GOAT, Jordan. MJ faced much tougher competition in the finals did something Duncan could never do: repeat and 3peat as an NBA champion. Plus he has twice as many finals MVPs as him.

Enjoy these videos, Tommy, Shaq, Dave Robinson, Kobe.... etc true ballers. Sadly, no one wants to hear this, this lovely game is decaying because the lack of team play with big men. What we been watching is gym class with soft superstars. That's why Timmy and Kobe still playing, 90s to present. We won't see legends like this. Don't care abt LBJ KD and Steph. Great players, soft ass league. So they can't be glorified until the league has more star power.

+BJ Tench man, I have been watching some old school 80's ball recently, and it's crazy how much better the bigs of that era were (in comparison to today's bigs. the two guys featured in this video are my starting PF and C if I had to pick an all time 5). today's bigs would get eaten alive if they had to play in the 80's/90's league

it was not the right time. in game 2 kobe made a clutch 3 but then missed 2 fts while duncan made a go ahead basket. coaching from rambis was also suspect. if kobe made those 2 fts its a diffrent series. but since he was still not consistent, it was a lesson for the future. the very next year the lakers fulfilled their potential with phil jackson.

@@jonathanwashington3065 They wouldn't have an answer for Duncan/Robinson either they didn't have a Shaq, sure Rodman would have an impact on defense but the twin towers would be equally as effective on that end. Plus they had other experienced players like Elie and Kersey that Spurs team was very underrated since it was a shortened season.

"Lakers leave 3 point shooters wide open in this series=Lakers lose in 4 Lakers stay home on 3 point shooters in 2001 WCF=Lakers win in 4" That was part of it, but part of it was that Robinson was worse due to age, Derek Anderson was injured by a dirty cheap shot from Juwon Howard, and Sean Elliott had kidney trouble. Plus, Kobe was still a kid in 1999, but in 2001 he was a man and the Lakers had 2 of the top 3 guys instead of just 2 of the top 10.

Spurs always had the deeper roster, everytime Lakers battle Spurs it is really scary for a Laker fan. But at least during Shaq's prime, you know he is unstoppable. Even when he loses, you know it is not Shaq's fault, as you see in games, it is other players failing that drag Shaq down
@a5anda6

nomooon Lakers definitely had the more talented roster in this series. Outside of Duncan, Robinson, and Elliot, the Spurs didn't have much at all. (Shoot, Avery Johnson couldn't even bring the ball up the court without turning his back every time.) They played 48 minutes and brought in on D, though.

this series started everything ...... shaq o'neal couldn't accept that tim duncan won a title before him & he was already in the nba for 7 or 8 years & still ringless ..... & it got really bad cuz that summer a lot of nba executives were interviewed about who's the nba superstar that time they want to build if they're starting a team ..... & guess what, majority of them said,tim duncan ....... & the always salty shaq o'neal got more salty & he was freaking mad ...... he was so jealous,why a lot them picked duncan & not him like it's duncan's fault ..... after the lakers won their 1st title, he's just starting talking trash to everyone, especially to timmy ...... it got really ugly cuz right after the lakers beat the nets for their 3rd title in 3 years,during the celebration,shaq o'neal grabbed the mic from jim gray & announced to the world ...... congratulations to jason kidd,the real regular season mvp ..... to those who didn't know,kidd & duncan are the top 2 players/candidates for the mvp that year which timmy won ...... & shaq o'neal didn't agree,so he insulted duncan ..... as we all know duncan doesn't talk trash & he didn't say anything,but was on a mission the next season cuz when the spurs meet the lakers ..... they eliminated them in the semis, prevented the lakers from going 4 peat ...... & shaq got jealous again when duncan won his 5th ring without or desperately going to some top teams like what he did the last few of his nba career ...... in other words,tim duncan got the last laugh ...... 😂🤣😂🤣-🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪 ....

Fans tend to only post the 3-4 Shaq games out of 30 that Duncan did quite well in! Seriously. Shaq dominated Duncan almost every time they played.... Shaq scored 27 points per game, in games Duncan played in. Higher than his career average! I believe his post season stats against Tim are even higher!

Shaq is better than Tim. Robinson is better than Tim. Tim had David and played all but his rookie season post-Jordan, if Shaq started in 98 he’d have 5 rings too but he has four , he played in a better era in the 90’s, came to dominate the 2000s before age weight and attrition slowed him down. Duncan was never as spectacular either.
