Man... these were the days ... I miss this. The drivers, the way the cars drove, the whine of those engines, sold out stands full of screaming fans.. sigh

This race seems to fall through the cracks. While obviously overshadowed by the next fall's all-time epic, this was a pretty good finish. Now, Earnhardt wasn't 17th with 3 laps left- here, he led the last 3 laps. It's not 2000, but it seems to be, if anything, one of the Intimidator's most underrated races. Around this time, people remember the '98 Daytona win, the '99 Bristol finish, Atlanta's Labonte photo finish, and his final win. His '99 Talladega sweep was pretty impressive, but gets forgotten by Earnhardt standards.

Dale Sr was my favorite driver this was the second race I ever went to the first was the spring race here at Talladega and the third race was the fall race in 2000 so I consider myself so lucky that the first 3 races I ever went to was won by my hero Dale Earnhardt and the third was his final win. Then 5 of the next 6 I went to there was won by Dale Jr and I saw the one Michael Waltrip won.

@Kevin Harper, it's because the current CEO is too "politically correct" to make things about the fans, but more, "What's 'best' for business." Back in these days, Bill France Jr. was CEO, and he was about everything Bill Sr. was about.

Ya know, when they weren't racing against each other and pissing each other off - Dale Earnhardt and Mike Skinner made a pretty good team.
@vidEvWill12 жыл бұрын
They was, but it was the team that held Skinner back. Earnhardt was the top driver of that team and two huge egos on each team never works. Earnhardt and Skinner were two agressive guys. That can't work. I agree, when they decided to work together they were great. Skinner was abusive on equipment though, he drove hard every lap.

Gosh... seeing Earnhardt lead and the fans (every seat in that place full) cheering him on... What has happened to NASCAR? And why do they try so hard to make a guy completely the opposite of Earnhardt NASCAR's next hero? I'm talking of course about Jimmie Johnson.

@menard98 If it was easy, guys like Kenny Schrader would have more than 2 wins. I don't believe Rusty ever won at Talladega and he could race as good as any.

Rusty wasn't really a plate racer outside of a shootout win when JG24 missed a shift he was average on plate tracks

@sivvybee Yep, maybe he should have never went to driving a ford, what ten,eleven wins and a title in a Pontiac then ... nuthing. The 27 was hell on wheels in that Kodiak.
