You’re not wrong. Rush is just a trio. A trio of incredibly talented, multi-instrumentalist who can write songs, sometimes really complex, time shifting songs, and still have them played heavily on mainstream rock radio; Decades after the music was released.

If you want to see what they do live, watch the video for Xanadu, Live at Exit Stage Left. It is a live performance. The singer/bassist/keyboardist uses a double neck bass/rhythm guitar, and keyboards, and a foot operated mini-moog synth as well. The guitarist plays a double neck 12 string/6 string and also has a foot operated mini-moog. In various songs sometimes the guitarist does bass with his feet, or he does keyboards with his feet. Other times it is the singer who is doing either bass or keyboards with his feet.

The bassist, Geddy Lee, during live shows is the singer, bass player and keyboard player. He uses bass pedals while playing keyboards. He may start on keyboard and hit a button with a program to fill while he fronts the band. The first time I saw them in 1979, he completely mesmerized me for about 90% of the show. Truly amazing musicians with such a history! Enjoy

Welcome to Rush. I'm always excited to see any classically-trained musician check out Rush. While they are a three-piece, they pride themselves on being able to perform their music with no extra musicians or backing tracks. As you listen to more Rush you will see how they compose their music with live performance in mind. Early introduction of synthesizers came in the form of Moog Taurus pedals, basically a set of synth organ pedals. Geddy and Alex could both play simple synth parts while playing their guitars, and yes, Geddy can do all this while singing. Later inclusion of keyboards brought new possibilites. Geddy often plays bass parts on the pedals while playing keys, and will play simple synth parts with the pedals while playing bass. Furthermore, Neil Peart uses many tuned percussion instruments and electonic pads as well, rounding out their capabilities. They sometimes used the electronics to trigger sound effects and short, pre-recorded loops, but they didn't play with backing tracks. The best example of this is to go right to Xanadu from their 1981 Exit Stage Left tour. The multi-tasking they do to pull this off is incredible. Alex plays 6- and 12-string guitars. Geddy plays bass, 12-string, keyboards, synth pedals, and sings. This recording is before many electronics were added, so Neil has chimes, tubular bells, temple blocks, and a glockenspeil - pretty much an entire orchestal percussion section, lol. It's really an amazing performance. Cheers!

The song is inspired by Mark Twain’s classic novel Tom Sawyer. It takes place in the South pre Civil War. Tom, his friend Huckleberry Finn (also a separate novel) & Jim were boyhood friends. Tom was from a respectable family. Jim was a slave & Huck came from the side of the tracks-a low life poor family. The line in the song ‘What you say about his company is what you say about society’ addresses racism & class. Unfortunately it still holds true today. It’s one of my all time favorite & truest lyrics.

This album came out a couple of months after I turned 10 years-old. A "big kid" down the street (Steve, he was 16), got it the day it came out and showed it to me. "Tom Sawyer" is song-1 on side-1 of the LP. Your reaction to the opening is exactly what mine was and I remember it like it was yesterday (I'm 52 now). I truly believe that it is impossible for a proficient musician to not at least appreciate Rush. I have always said -- you may not *like* Rush, but you cannot say that they suck.

You are not wrong. Geddy Lee played bass for Rush as well as keyboards and lead vocals. He's also been known to use his nose to adjust the mic while his hands are busy. Their live concert sound is very much like their studio sound. You also mentioned the logo, that is a pentacle, not a pentagram, and it's not satanic. The star represents the powers that be that run the world and the man is repulsed by it and resisting it.

3:16 When Geddy Lee sings "Today's Tom Sawyer gets high on you and the _space he invades_ he gets by on you." the synthesizer riff which follows is that of the Space Invader's arcade video game which was popular at the time. And the warble at the end of the riff is the sound the mothership made as it crossed the screen. It is a melody that every kid growing up in the 70s and 80s knew.

Listen to Xanadu, the Exit Stage Left version of 1982. You’ll be amazed by their virtuosity, musicianship, multi-tasking skills and Geddy’s incredible voice.

🤗 Glad you like Rush! May I suggest a Rush Instrumental 'La Villa Strangiato' (ESL)? As a Classical Guitarist, 🤔 I think you'll appreciate seeing how these 3 Magicians work their magic in the video As a long time fan of Rush, they kick butt Live, so requesting 'Working Man' (Live in Cleveland) which is full of Musical surprises and is always a fun romp. 😔 RIP Neil Peart aka 🥁 The Professor. 😍🐰

I'm so happy for you! It's like you finally get to open an endless amount of presents from random people from all over the World. I didn't hear you mention "Iron Maiden", so yeah be ready for that. I suggest as your first "Maiden" song should be "The Trooper".
