2012 with 248,000 on it today! Regular oil changes! 4th set of tires. Had some issues EARLY on... like power window was very slow, sticks in the cold... manifold gaskets replaced, AC fixed (something that required the dash come off), something with the Trans (a few times, same thing, put the truck in limp mode, other time left me in the street needing tow). I've replaced the suspension, breaks and rotors 4 times, Headlamp wire harness, both front wheel bearing, a bad coil.... but, I've never changed the radiator coolant, or any of the differentials, or any of that other stuff and she is driving me down the road. I want to get 300k out of it. It doesn't owe me anything. I'll get something pretty again after that!

I still have my 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 quad cab Lonestar Edition 5.7 liter hemi flex-fuel, with over 422,000 miles. I remember buying the truck brand new back in 07 of November when it was called "King of a trucks." And not to mention, I still have "Lifetime Powertrain warranty" for as long as I own a vehicle under my name. And of course your regular maintenance and other stuff. When it comes to my automatic transmission I've only had it flushed 3 times, every 30K miles up to 90k miles. After that I just drop the pan and drain the fluid. Replace filter and gasket every 30K miles. Never flush an automatic transmission with high mileage. As for my differential I changed every 60K miles other than that it's still running like a champ. Good video!

No need to replace trans oil and filter every 30k. Every 60k is enough. But its up to you. My sister a 2003 1500 5.7 with the 545rfe it has 365k and it's still on its original trans. And she also has a 18 2500 6.4 with a 66rfe it has 95k and it also has lifetime warranty. I replaced the valve body at 55k due to a warped valve body. The main issue with the newer 65, 66, and 68rfe trans are valve body's warping, od clutches Buring up causing flare 4th gear and slips In 5th. On the newer 68 I have been seeing the snap ring pop off 2c piston. The truck will still run and shift OK most of the time. It may get a dtc set p2701. The 545rfe are mostly reliable.

The zf 8 speed on a few of the 1500s dont have a transmission dipstick. Theres a fill plug on the side of the transmission. Fluid should slowly flow out if its full. The pan and filter is all one unit so if you need to change fluid, do the pan also. And you will need a fluid transfer pump to get fluid back into transmission. A cheap $10 pump from a auto parts store will work fine

Yep no need to have dealer do trans service. Just make sure to use correct oil for 8 speeds. I have worked on many of these trans, customers replace there trans oil but use regular atf4. Then the bring it in to the dealer complaining the trans issues. Take a sample and it's pink oil. Automatic warranty decline on trans. I felt bad for a customer, he was a Vietnam War vet and ran over something, it cracked the pan. So he pulled the pan off and jbweld it which actually stop the leak, but he used atf4. Since most 8 speeds transmission repairs require us to email pictures of fluid and stuff, they would have not covered a replacement under warranty due to impact damage. So if you don't know what you are doing they yeah bring it in to the dealer or a good mechanic that knows how to service this trans.

Rear differential should be filled to the line on my 2010 Dodge Ram... it has a mark...Filling it up to the bottom of the opening will be overfull and cause the rear seals to leak at the wheels. Change all u joints at 100k with greaseable u joints ZERKS.

I picked up a 2020 Ram 1500 Classic SLT with 68k miles about to hit 72k and going to change the oil now to keep it strong! So far so good 🙌🏽 came from a 2013 bmw and it was a nightmare learned my lesson tho 💀🤣

8 Speed Trans have closed systems that can't be checked conventionally. You have to go through some weird ritual or take it to the dealer to get it done correctly without compromising the integrity of the closed system. Kinda cool because I imagine it might have more longevity but at the same time makes me a little worried because I can't check on it myself.

There's no transmission dipstick on these and no way to check the fluid easily. The 8 speed ZF8HP transmission is supposedly a sealed lifetime transmission. There is a way to service them, but it is a very specific detailed protocol that is important to follow. Most Ram dealerships just say that it's a lifetime transmission and will not service them. The filter is built into the Pan... so in order to change the filter, you have to replace the pan. There are now some aftermarket pans that have a replaceable filter. The simplest maintenance is to just do a drain and refill. It's better than nothing. It's only a partial/incomplete service... you cannot drain all the fluid out and you're not replacing the filter, but you are getting about 50% new fluid in there. Just make sure you follow the proper steps, ie: level the transmission (not the truck... this usually means having the rear end higher, which you need to do anyway so rear wheels are off the ground to run thru the gear sequence, one of them being running it in second for 5 or 10 seconds... research it carefully and do it right...).

What's the age and mileage of this truck? Seems to be in pretty good condition.
@chromaticdragon3 ай бұрын
4:50... if you have a sealed transmission, like I do, you'd have to go under the truck.

When checking transmission fluid read the dipstick, it tells you check with the transmission in neutral. Otherwise you get a bad reading

2016 Ram 1500 with 79,000 miles. Has the 8 speed transmission and doesn’t have the trans dipstick… wish it did so I could check it. Side note, why did Dodge not think it was a good idea to have a cab air filter on my model? Had to add my own with and aftermarket kit.

No dipstick. Pretty involved procedure to change the fluid in the 8hp70. Fluid change is recommended every 80000miles by manufacturer of transmission, Chrysler claims lifetime...not likely.

Great video! Except, for the oil and air filter change… This video might make people think it’s ok to run 100,000 miles before an oil and air filter change! In my opinion, neither one of these should have been apart of this video!!!

I just brought a 2014 and while looking over it I didn't see a trans dipstick and assumed it was a sealed case. Guess I'll be rechecking in the morning.

8 speed transmission doesn't have a dipstick. Sealed system. Pan is changed when servicing as it contains filter.

The wheel bearing check is for a pretty bad bearing that has little hold. If it is a seized up one, the tire test wont help. Check your abs sensor at the hub and get a flashlight, if there is a significant amount of grease on the ring sensor of the hub, you likely have a seized up bearing that needs to be replaced. I only know this because my abs light came on and this was the reason. Also a soft rotational tire hum noise was an indicator. Purge valve checks on these rigs are also a must even without a thrown code. Also, the gas caps on these 4th gens are garbage.

Respectfully not all forth Gen Rams have the trans deep stick !! Rams that equipped with the 8speed transmission made by ZF they DONT have a deep stick and the check on the quality of trans oil has to be on the hoist with a scanner.

Honest question I got a 2016 Ram 1500 and I dont know if it ever got its transmission serviced at 60 000k and it was at 89k.....now it's 95k. Would it be bad to change it still? I'm always nervous to change fluid or touch a transmission
@mbr91062 ай бұрын
Did you ever change it ?
@HaveASenseOfMorals2 ай бұрын
@@mbr9106 No, too many people urged me not to. When it's too a certain point and too late, you'll definitely have more issues after changing it. Flushing it is even worse when it's too late. At 160k miles, you should just look into replacing it.

Anything chrysler/dodge used to be crap, but if you look at long term maintenance, RAM 1500 now beats f150...but really, no half ton truck is all that great in that regard. I suspect part of the reason is that they *are* trucks - and are used that way. If you're off roading and hauling regularly, well yeah, that causes things to break faster.
