Why I truly like your repair videos? 1. The music is playing, but very low, no blaring heavy metal music louder than the person talking. 2. Sue only talks about the repair and the next steps, no annoying stories telling or repeating things over and over like many KZbinrs. 3. Not to sound sexist, but Sue motivates me to try these repairs that I might be in the middle of the fence about (like the Mazda 6 suspension work). 4. All items needed are clearly listed. Great videos.

I finished this job on my 2005 Mazda 6 2.3 liter motor today. Took me 3 hours or so, but I also changed the oil and replaced the serpentine belt. I have a bit of advice that might help people. First, I had to put the car on stands, remove the passenger front wheel and pop off the plastic splash panel to get to the belt tensioner with a 15mm wrench. If you remove that belt take pictures first! The way this belt loops around all the pulleys is a little complicated. OK, now the second thing.....I got it all put back together and refilled with coolant and I ran it to test for leaks and to make sure the thermostat would pop open like it should. My heart sank when I got no heat inside the car and the temperature gauge climbed to the H really fast. SO it was stuck closed. But THIS is why: Because the Thermostat housing sits on the block in the vertical position on this motor, all the coolant, or most of it, runs out of the block when you remove the thermostat housing. And I think probably the heater core drains out too. So what was happening was I had air trapped behind the thermostat at first and not coolant. Eventually it popped. I let the motor cool off, topped off the radiator and tested it again and it works perfectly. I get warm air in the cabin almost immediately. The Thermostat pops at around 180 degrees and the temperature gauge sits right in the middle just as it should. This is a doable job and you can save a couple hundred bucks in the process.

Thanks for the video ,,just did mine today ,,for those of us who don't have the special tool for the tensioner , the best way is to use a 14mm ring and open end spanner , and then use another one onto the end of it to get the leverage , ,like 18mm or 19mm.., access from underneath , remove the wheel and the wheel well liners so you can see it. You will need a helper to slip the belt off and on the ps pump pulley, while you push on the spanner for the tensioner.

Having just done this on my UK-spec '06 Mazda3 2.0l I'll add that the lower bolt is a lot easier to get to from underneath and the clamp on the main hose was impossible to get back into place until I sprayed some silicone oil on the hose.

Well instructed! I have a Mazda Tribute with the location and design of the thermostat being very similar if not the same. I am prepared to tackle tomorrow! ha ha. Seriously though this video gives me the know how and confidence to handle as a do it your selfer. The torgue used is in question for the thermostat install and how many gallons of coolant to put back but may have to use best judgement on the torque and follow her instrutions when putting coolant back in. Thanks!

Good clear competent R&R. I wish more guys would be as clear. Far too many of them don't speak clearly, block the camera view, have inadequate lighting, get distracted with irrelevancies or simply faff around too much. It always strikes me as being daft having to pull a bunch of other components off to get at a part that is totally unrelated to them. With extreme engine compactness now, often in the search for lower bonnet lines and aerodynamic efficiency, this is almost inevitable. Try getting just the temperature sensor out from a Mazda 6 MPS; it involves removal of intercooler air-outlet pipe, MAF sensor, battery and turbo inlet and outlet piping plus a bunch of smaller pollution control and vacuum/boost hoses and other bits of harness and finally requires a deep 19mm socket and the fingers of a surgeon to get at the sensor under the HP fuel pump. The combination of such items as thermostat and housing together now is another irritating trend that just adds cost to the part. The old Holden (GM) red motor thermostat was top, front and centre of the engine and enabled the easy removal of one hose connectors (or smtms two, depending on heater configuration) from the housing and change of a thermostat, keeping the original housing, in less than 5-10 minutes. Car designers and engine manufacturers need to do better in this respect.

That belt tensioner is a pain, with open end wrench 15mm is loose and 14mm won't fit, it could be 9/16" 🤷. Box end wrench 15mm+extension pipe will work, but from underneath the car/wheel arch, but then you will need a buddy to put the belt back on, from the hood side.
