The World is beautifuly, amazingly, and epically awesome! Not to be afraid of, scorned or ran away from but embraced. My hope is for anyone stuck in a cult, oppressed or forced into isolation (for whatever reasons), can watch this documentary, and come join us. I promise you the only scary thing about the World is all the wonderful things it has to offer you......Good luck to you all : )

I just stumbled upon this documentary and I’m so glad someone made this! I was raised in iblp and ATI. My family was in it for about 15 years probably, from the time I was probably a toddler until I was about 17 when we finally got out of it completely. We weren’t in too deep thank goodness, but my siblings and I went to several of his programs and our family attended a few of the conferences. I knew it was weird and I questioned things a lot so bill gothard told my parents I was “rebellious” and needed more guidance, so he invited me to live and work at the hq in Illinois. I lived there for a summer and I remember how creepy he was and how he treated us girls. He hugged us all the time and had one on one counseling and played footsie with us under the table at meals. I was pretty sheltered, so I didn’t know that much about sexual deviance or predators etc. I just thought it was weird. I thank the Lord that I had my own throughs and opinions, I did not allow him to bully me or take advantage of me. He knew I was too strong willed to be one of his favorite little play things. But I know some girls who were not so lucky😰 he liked the shy, sweet girls who were pure and chaste. All of this to say, what this man taught was not what God intended. He used the Bible to control and oppress people but this is not God’s heart. This is not Christianity, it was a perverse form of Christianity, but please do not put this on Christians as a whole. I believe the Bible and the God of the Bible, and I’m glad that I knew enough about the Bible to know that something was off. I’m glad I narrowly escaped this pervert. I hope he gets what he deserves for all the evil he’s done. I know he will answer to God for it one day, if not here on earth.

So glad you didn't let him take God away from you. When people are abused religiously, then often turn completely from God & become bitter, hate-filled atheists. Although I wasn't in a cult, I was religiously abused & I wasted years running from God & being angry. I regret that I let their actions lead me to choose to walk away from God, the church, & living a Christian life for so many years.

I'm glad that went out for you so well. You seemed to have learned from that, I hope the others will find some way to get out. I was in this Cult, by my parents decision. I was around second or third grade when we entered this ATI/IBLP Cult. I didn't realize it was a Cult until...probably my mid teens. Which I believe was due to being extremely isolated from the real world due to my parents decision to home-school, being part of ATI/IBLP, churches that were led by the Cult Leaders persay, which REALLY isolated us. The Legalism that came from this Cult was overwhelming. It was used to control the wives/women, girls, and even the boys somewhat. The men were the hierarchy in the Cult. All the parents believed that they were keeping their kids safe from the world, when in reality it all did more damage then good. The ATI program used fear based religion to control everyone. I've had to go to Therapists over the years to help in my healing from it all. I found the courage to leave this Cult in my early twenties. I"m glad someone found the courage to finally make a small documentary of it. Kudos.

There are many different support groups online for what you have experienced, even if you don't share the exact same religion/cult. Anyone growing up in an environment like that, regardless of its given title, will share the same or similar scars and trauma as the result of such an upbringing. It may be worth it to check some of those support groups out, as it is always nice to connect with others who know exactly what you're going through and make you realize that you aren't alone. I have not survived religious abuse, but I do know what it is like to have an abusive father. My "father" was/is a narcissist who was abusive, an alcoholic, controlling, and extremely manipulative. My mother and I were both his constant daily victims, and together we both faced his abuse and rages. It was not easy growing up in the environment he created, but I thank God for my amazing and beautiful mother, who did everything in her power to give me the best life possible despite our circumstances. My father always read the bible before he went to bed each night (always kept his bible under the bed on his side), and would project about God and His teachings etc. but he was always a walking contradiction, which was confusing as a child. I always had a genuine love for the Lord, but my faith was very distorted and limited due to the constant hypocritical ways of my father. I had a very warped view of the bible, and until my later teen/young adult years I was even a bit afraid to even read it, as I always associated the bible to my father and him reading his every night. I am thankful for God's patience though, as with time He has helped me overcome so much of the damage that my father caused, and I no longer look at the bible with resentment, but instead find it as a refuge and source of peace. It is so hard growing up with an abusive father, and people don't realize just how deeply it can affect all aspects of your life and your view of yourself and the world. I am so sorry that you know that same pain. I hope and pray that with time you will begin to find peace after what you have endured! Definitely consider seeking out some form of an online support group, whether it be for religious based abuse, or just for parental abuse in general, as it can be so healing to talk with others who truly understand. I also suggest that you seek professional help from a therapist, if you haven't already, as that is something that has helped me greatly as well. May God bless you! 💗🙏

Tina Growing up in ATI I interpreted much smaller things than this as punishments for displeasing God. Can't find my keys? DVD player not working? Hitting all red lights? Better start thinking of what sins you can confess to make it stop so it doesn't escalate. Big things like a car breaking down usually lead to panic attacks because then God must be really angry.

Something they left out was the teaching that since we all deserve hell, anything better than hell was a blessing. Another teaching that coincided with that was that we should surrender all our rights to God, and any feeling of unhappiness was a red flag that we still had some rights we hadn't surrendered yet. Now couple those two core beliefs with the authority structure set up, and you have the perfect scene for abuse. No matter what happened, we thought "if this makes me upset, I need to surrender my right to be happy. Thank you, God for this situation since it's so much better than hell. Please help me to surrender to your will even when it doesn't make sense to me." I consider myself very fortunate that my father genuinely loved me and was only in ATI because he was deceived and trying to do the best he could. So many of my friends weren't so lucky.

Kaytie Buckhalt Ati does not teach abuse I personally disagree with several things Bill Gothars teaches, and I think if you asked Bill Gothard himself he would say its okay to disagree with him, if your family got legalstic with it and were abusing you then that is on that, maybe its for that very reason that God took Bill Gothard out of his position, people where treating his teachings too sacredly, but he never taught to do that....

Kaytie Buckhalt I...am at a loss for words. My father's side of the family are all prechers. Even my father has preached. My great grandma was my Sunday school teacher. She was a sunday school teacher for over 50 years. My mother when she first met my father had unknowingly wondered in to a "church" that was a cult. Jim Jones style. She kicked up as fuss in the "church" screaming, yelling, throwing things, calling the "church" out on their BS, and flat out called them a cult...she was kicked out. I think my mom's lack of ability to go along with what she was being told and voice that what they were doing was wrong not just from a Christain stand point but from a moral stand point. I think that saved her from a lot of danger. I am very sorry that you had to live though this. I am sorry that your friends had to suffer this. My heart goes out to you and your loved ones. My mom has a saying "cults are like an abusive relationship. You don't know you are in one until it's to late." I am glad you broke free.

Jeremy Ftw he was removed from the position because he is a sexual predator and keeping him in charge once that became public knowledge damaged the ability of the ati to make money from people the whole concept of the ati is abusive to anyone who is not the " authority". As a male you would be part of that privileged class. of course people will suport and d3fend a system that they benefit from. gothard teaches hitting infants, gothard teaches mindless obedience. gothard teaches helplessness. gothard teaches distrust of uoirand.own feelings. gothard teaches that men are helpless in the face of lust. gothard teaches victim blaming. gothard and the ati are the tools of satan sent to destroy men by allowing them an excuse to be weak and to destroy women by taking there independence away and to destroy children by keeping them from becoming adults in mind and spirit. gothard is evil

The biggest problem here is that there are just enough positive things included in this cult that you can easily get sucked in, and not even realize it. There's nothing wrong with modesty, good character traits, and be the best you can be. But when it crosses over to legalism and a sole man (Gothard) as absolute authority, we're in cult territory. My parents actually met at a Gothard Conference back in the mid-70s and I'm so incredibly grateful that they didn't accept everything that Gothard said, but were able to think critically. I was homeschooled and had several friends in ATI but as kids we didn't talk much about details at the time-- I just knew that their parents were even more strict than mine (which was unbelievable!) and they were excluded from some activities. Now I have adult friends who went through ATI as kids and they're all either in counseling or in need of counseling. And parents don't always get into it to mess up and control their kids-- I believe that a lot of them just want to create a good, wholesome life for their family. So sad.

Never mind the fact that I'd been on my own from age 18 or that I was not invited to live with my parents. I was considered unworthy and "in rebellion." Now, I thank God this cult rejected me. They didn't and I felt they were on board with it. I tried my best to submit, but honestly, there was nothing to submit to. I wasn't loved. I stayed in that for 20 years. Painful lonely years. I am still a Christian, but I've come to label Gothard's teachings as Christian mental illness. Now I believe in "mutual submission." More balanced.

I was first exposed to Bill Gothard's teachings in 1990 -- I was just a teenager at the time -- when I went with some friends to Gothard's 'basic' seminar in Atlanta. I went with the same friends to the 'advanced' seminar the following year. My parents had gone to one of his seminars in the 1970's, though thankfully they never got involved with his organization and never tried to build our lives around his teachings. I gradually came to recognize there were problems with a lot of what Gothard taught. For instance, he was notorious for taking Bible verses out of context and then using them as justification for his extreme positions. His heavy emphasis on absolute submission to authority concerned me as well. Additionally, it bothered me how many people that went to those Gothard seminars -- including the family I went with to the seminars in Atlanta -- practically idolized Bill Gothard and would uncritically accept anything he taught. The young daughter of that family, by the way, ended up going to work at IBLP (a.k.a. "the Institute") for a time. She got to know Bill Gothard personally and, by his request, kept working there longer than she had initially intended to. She definitely fit the profile of a "Gothard Girl" (pretty, slender, with long straight hair, etc.), but I dearly hope she didn't end up becoming one of Gothard's sexual abuse victims. :-(

When we left the cult building, a white van started following us and blocked off the road so we were trapped. We kept trying to turn and they would reverse and block us again. I had to go off the road to escape and even then the van kept following us. Who knows what would’ve happened if they had got us. I don’t expect people to believe this because it sounds crazy but I’m telling you what happened to me last night. If you see an old, white, smaller van that is slightly rusty and has tinted windows on the back doors and on the back of the sides, please beware. This is obviously a dangerous and active cult and I advise to stay far away. Especially if around the hinsdale area

Though Jim Jones used hooked people in under a Christian-based/ Christian-masked philosophy, it was much different rhetoric than what's being used here. The bait-and-hook that eventually became Jonestown was initially geared toward the poor. The "family" archetype that drew people in was more about experiencing Jones as Father/ God, vs. the cult in this documentary bait-and-hooking people with delusions of totalitarian authority in their own home.

Thank you for making this film. I am a Christian and homeschooled my children. I ran into Gothard teachings at that time and felt they were skewed, based on false premises and abusive. His view of authority and "headship" is unbiblical. I was very concerned for the girls in these families. Many received a poor education and were restricted to their homes. The oldest daughters became the second mother in the family structure and were expected to spend their 20s taking care of younger siblings instead of going to college or working. Don't get me started on their abusive and manipulative idea of child rearing. I have often wondered how married couples would take Gothard's advice on marriage when he was never married. But mostly I felt pity for many caught in this cult because it was so fear based. They are fearful of punishment, and fearful of God. The grace of God, his kindness and forgiveness are pretty absent concepts in Gothard's mechanistic theology. I hope your movie is a comfort to those who have left.

I think he was able to take the positive and leave out the negative. Not too many people can do this. I guess you have to look at the amount of the rules and control the leaders have over the followers. somehow my family escaped all this.

I was so close to being homeschooled with the ATI programn. Thank God that Gothard's teachings made my mom uneasy. Unfortunately I know kids who were in ATI... and some of those teachings made it into my church, homeschool co-ops, girl scouts and other social events. It took me years to find God... to truly find God. But what I went through is nothing compared to what these and many others have gone through because of Gothard. The only "sin" these parents committed was to try to make the world better for their family. It was the 80s and 90s. Christian's were looking for direction, wisdom and meaning. Then like that one young woman said, you just get sucked in. That other woman was 100% right. As Christians, we HAVE to look out for each other .... and as humans we have to as well. And that young man is changing the world. PS: this documentary was so well done! Kudos.

I apologize to those who will be offended but this is just a tiny step away from fundamentalist Christian. I am not saying all fundamentalist Christians rape the women in their family. But these rules and basic teachings are the way I was kind of brought up. My family was not as strict as the others in my Baptist Church but the four baptist churches in my small hometown taught these rules. And I do know of a couple of the families that did molest the girls but that wasn’t the norm. But I think this sets the scene. I was molested by non-family members and you can’t question that. And my parents accepted it instead of fighting for me because they didn’t want attention brought to them. That women belonged to men was definitely the rule. I dumped this when I was 15. And I didn’t go through the strictest teachings. But the fact that I have to live in fear of everything I do, that I am afraid to question things, that I have had such rotten things happen in my life means that I am not close enough to a God, etc. This hits very close to home for me because so much fits what I saw and what happened to me. And I know nothing of this group, this...cult? this is the first I’ve heard of them.

I am sorry to hear your story but also sad to report that it is not unusual. These Seminars do not represent a 'cult' or denomination but a system of teaching to be used by practicing Christians of all stripes. The similarity to a separate cult or religious group is that they are targeted toward people who are already Christians and do not seek to get them to leave their churches but to introduce the teachings in to the churches that they already belong to which is what sounds like happened to you. I also grew up in a Baptist Church that adopted these teachings. Fortunately they did not catch on and were quickly dismissed but unfortunately the same can not be said for other churches. Thank you for sharing your story.

ATI was legalistic and cult-ish, BUT at least every child, including myself, who grew up in ATI, owned a Bible and were encouraged to read it. Despite the ministries flaws, many of us who grew up in ATI have a real relationship with the only true Savior, Jesus Christ. Praise the Lord. There are billions of people around the world with far worse childhoods than ATIers; and sadly, sexual exploitation/cover-up, is rampant in EVERY community. Blaming ATI for the sexual perversion of its members is misguided. “Men love the darkness rather than the light because their deeds are evil.” Unlike the behavior of the wicked; the church must never tolerate sexual abuse. Our enemy is not Bill, or IBLP, our enemy is the Devil and wickedness within our own hearts. I Praise Jesus for His forgiveness for such a wretch as me. But there is definitely enough truth in his system to be attractive to families who want to protect their children and raise Godly children. I personally went a different direction, but don't be too harsh on parents who use it. Their ultimate intentions are usually good and they want the best for their families and for them Gothard's teachings promise so much of what these families are looking for. I heard a quote the other day, "You make the best decisions you can as as a parent at the time." We are not all perfect, and neither are you. Any sense u may have of God, Buddha, etc. should lift u up...deify u, even....shine a light on that in-dwelling spirit that u are. A religion that beats u down with fear, rules and feelings of unworthiness is just a cult. U are already perfect, whole and complete.

I can't speak for everyone but I wanted to just give another side. I was also part of this growing up and had a wonderful childhood! I have great memories from the ALERT program and still have friends from those days. I can't say I agreed with everything but that would be true of just about any organization. I have tried to follow the Bill Gothard lawsuit and I know as of 2018 it was dropped from court. I think this short film would have been much more helpful if they didn't just focus on the negative.

@@LaraCroftEyes1 I don't know him personally so I cannot say one way or another. Can you point to some teaching in this video that you think is perverted, sick or twisted? I don't remember any pressure to stay in ATI. My family did it off and on. Just saying I don't think it qualifies as a "cult" and they really did produce some great material for families. I'm sorry your experience was so negative.

IBLP and Mr. Gothard helped changed mine and my parents life’s immensely. I was allowed to ask questions endlessly, dress how I wanted (though encouraged to be modest), visit my family, free to go in and out of the headquarters and learned a lot from this organization. Without his ministry, I would still possibly be a Catholic and someone without a personal relationship with Jesus.

Too many states have statutes of limitation that are far too brief for abuse allegations, especially sexual abuse against children, to be made and litigated.

The account on the pamphlet at 12:06 is sick. It's the baby sisters' fault that the brother abused them? Who wrote this - Josh Duggar? Little kids running around naked in the house after their bath is normal. Being tempted to abuse them because of it is not and you can't blame them or their parents for it. You're the sicko. THAT's just one of the MANY things wrong with Gothard's teachings.

I was homeschooled with another curriculum but I was startled to see how some of the things I was taught while attending a private Christian college (the umbrella of protection, anything better than Hell is better than you deserve and I believe others) seem to have originated from ATI. It makes sense when you think of the thousands and thousands of Christian students that sat under his teachings.

The sad result is some that come out of this system of hyper-legalism then go the other direction, rejecting all biblical standards, attacking any Christians that adhere to biblical standards, and instead embrace the godlessness of the current culture. There is a happy medium for Christians. Some public charter schools will allow for curriculum choice while still providing opportunities for more open socialization. And for those that can afford, Christian schools are also an alternative. The sad reality is that many public schools are not a good choice.

I think you’re speaking of a very small group of individuals who swing that far a viciously. Most of us who have left this control and conditioning are interested in healing ourselves from the pain we suffered. Most don’t really worry about religion as they once did because it is the source of the abuse and pain. We don’t shout “all christians are bad”. What I can say is I plead that all christians do no harm to others and listen to abuse victims who speak up. THAT should be the bigger concern.
