[1c] New CSX Tier 4 Units and Why the Police Stopped Q194, Carlton - Athens GA, 11/15/2015 ©mbmars01

This video features the mixed freight train CSX Q614-14 and it tells the strange story of the intermodal CSX Q194-15. Q194 was stopped by the police at Howie Siding, because there was an incident with people involved, who were near the track when the train passed. As far as I can tell, nothing seriously happened, but Q194 got substantially delayed. Both engines of Q194 were brand new tier 4 GEVO ET44AH engines (CSXT # 3302 leading, # 3280 trailing). I spend countless nights chasing CSX & FEC at night only not to film because of lighting. I was fascinated by the steep hills, something that we dont have. Keep up the great work. Many thanks. You really got the point. Often I know what to expect, but it is more exciting not to know. However, this can also be frustrating at times if one doesn't find a train for hours. I haven't yet railfanned in FL, but I've been there many times. I like it. Flat ground can be very nice for long shots. I agree, railfanning at night is awesome, mainly because one isn't bothered that much by other cars drivers. However, if I go out, I always want to bring something home - meaning video material - but that is apparently not easy at night. Thanks again and keep watching!

Greatly exaggerated. The photog is zoomed in with a fairly long lens. A little later, around 7:30-7:50, he zooms out and you get a more realistic look at the track profile.

It's incredible to see almost 10,000 HP and nothing but clean heatwaves and exhaust fumes, even with telephoto lenses! That's really tough to do with diesel - I give them credit even if it's probably sucking down more fuel and cutting engine life in half with all the EGR crap.

Exactly. We have had many railways. But unfortunately in the late 50s, the JK government, has created a wrong modernization project. They felt that the future was the highway. They created the RFFSA notorious and have embraced all railroads that mostly were scrapped after decades and decades under British control mainly. Since then, what we saw was the dismantling of our rail park and the end of passenger trains. Today, amargamos this chaos. Our production has to follow mostly by road and the cost is too high. Not to mention the loss on the roads. With the end of RFFSA the FHC government, Brazil is beginning to regain its rail park, which will take many years, but at least there is the will. With privatizção RFFSA, our lines are being modernized and new locomotives and wagons are being introduced gradually. An example is the MRS Logística, the company I work as a designer designer and has made incredible investments. Recently a AC44i fleet was built to transport iron ore from Minas Gerais and the ore export ports, and transport laminates, container, grain, etc. New lines of subways, VLT and others will have the few investments that need and hopefully that Brazil again have their lines as before. Unfortunately, Lula and Dilma governments have been the bane of our country. Fortunately this time is passing. Hugs and once again congratulations on your beautiful pictures. Only one thing caught my attention: as there is buckling lines. It would be the changes in the weather?

Aloizio Barros I'm glad to hear that there are investments into the railroad system. I have seen the light-rail project in Cuiaba, but after the soccer world cup was over, money was cut and progress became very slow. Unfortunately, that's how it is often in Brazil. Great ideas, knowledgeable people, ambitious projects, but then it's rarely brought to an end. The landscape here is somewhat unique and the railroad just followed the natural design.

the up and down grades at 5 minutes on this mainline are crazy!! It looks like an off road motorcycle course. I noticed that the 3211was followed by an EMD SD. Really like the EMD stuff. I wish the EPA would get off their case and let them continue to build the world's best locomotives. I am from a railroad family, and know a lot of engineers, management and AGYM's from BNSF, AMTRAK and other railroads. The typical opinion stated by the above is that the GE locos are a lot "cheaper". (their exact words, not mine) Apparently EMD still has the best, most efficient, and most advance, patented technology. I think Progress will eventually regain the realm of leading locomotive manufacturer again. Especially if they get the 710 where it needs to be in tier 4 regulations. I guess from what i am also told is that there is a very long waiting list for EMD locos, as that GE's are a lot easier to get for motive power now.

I agree with this many people don't realize how inherently dangerous railroading is despite the many safety devices the railroads employ which did not exist years ago. Despite this on occasion trains can derail, engines can fail spewing broken parts into the air, parts can go flying off cars, and there are probably a number of other things I have overlooked which can cause injury for people who get too close to the tracks (even in some public places close to railroad property).

I think you can hear what it is really about listening to the 2 guys talk, starting around 19:50 --- Speaker #1 at about 19:50, "... apparently they called back, it's not a guy laying on the track, it's a guy riding on or I guess laying on one of freight cars in your train. I lived on A1A Route 1 between 2 RR crossings for 15 yrs. in S.Florida. The Trains would often stop dead on the tracks just to wait for an oncoming one to get to a side track so the looong freight Trains could continue on. 100 plus cars......... Richard S.

Lol, there's nothing wrong with it indeed, but you're right. At some locations some people get nervous and call in the police. It happens all the time - one gets used to it. Typically the cops are quite relaxed once they realize that one simply watches and films trains. On one occasion, when it was still dark before dawn, a cop even turned on all his interceptor's lights for me to get a better shot of a train. This was extremely nice. I never complain; they just do their job and I respect it. On my "home line", where people know me, I never had any troubles.

Sorry, but having grown up with a family of railroad workers, I grew up around and with trains. It IS our duty to report ANY SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY on ANY TRAIN that we may see. Dadburn right I'll call in someone riding on a train, it's trespassing and illegal to be doing so if you aren't an active worker on that train! And I also will try and get a clear shot of the offender and turn their photo and/or copy of the video over to the railroad so they can catch the offender. Today's trains do not have the old railing system underneath the rolling stock like they did many years ago. So it is extremely dangerous to be hopping a train today and staying on. You could end up saving that persons' life that has no business there. Sorry, but it is OUR CIVIC DUTY as railfans to report things out of the ordinary on any train that we may come across and see, including anything on a train that could be a disaster waiting to happen.

It looks a bit exaggerated in the videos. Nonetheless, these grades are substantial and many trains fail to climb them. When the original tracks were laid in the mid-19th century, nobody cared here in the south about grading due to lack of need and resources. Where track was replaced and repaired over the decades (a conductor I talked to called it a patchwork line), it would require an entire new construction to reduce the inclines. That's just too expensive. CSX keeps it as it is and experiments with DPUs to reduce the frequent knuckle breaking.

Any GE AC locomotive's purchased in the last couple of years comes with a GE supplied maintenance contract and GE makes sure they get the correct maintenance required by GE. This makes them more reliable as 98 % of railroad shop facilities are setup and their personal trained to maintain EMD power. Anything else GE ALCO got substandard service which contributed to their less than stellar performance. Most railroad shop employees look at Alcos and GE locomotive's as oddballs and don't like them because they are a little more difficult to service versus EMD locomotive's. I saw this with my own eyes on the old Boston and Maine railroad back in the 60's with a bunch of 539 powered switchers and 5 6-251 powered S-5 switchers and 30 odd ALCO RS-3's. Shop forces liked the switchers as they considered them virtually indestructible but felt the 244 engined road switchers while good when they ran required too much maintenance. The reason GE came out with the universal series locomotive's that we know as Uboats is because ALCO was losing business to EMD due to The bad reputation ALCO got with early 244 engine problems and by the time they straitened the 244 out and made it reliable the damage was done and ALCO never recovered so GE and ALCO separated and GE continued with their development of the cooper-Bessemer design diesel they introduced in 1959 as the U25B/C locomotive which within a couple of years eclipsed ALCO as the number 2 locomotive manufacturer in the US. The universal series Diesel engines were an outgrowth of the GE 70 ton locomotive which used a 6 cylinder inline turbocharged Cooper-Bessemer diesel engine rated at 600 horsepower that GE like so much they bought the design from CB to develop it further.

I pretty much agree. I will have to say that GE has been much much better in the last decade. I would not limit it to "couple of years". But yeah, GE made it difficult to maintain older used locomotives. Lousy parts sourcing and not as many maintenance experts available. GM just made things so much easier to maintain. All changed now though

Love to see all those JB Hunt containers on the train. I drove for JB Hunt for 12 years and pulled hundreds of them. I come from a railroad family - my great grandfather, grandfather and several uncles worked for Erie Lackawana way back when. Funny how I ended up doing the same job my grandfather did - picking up freight at the rail yard and delivering it.

We used to move a lot of JB Hunt trailers back in the 70s when it was still only TOFC piggybacks, and we had piggyback loading and unloading by those 2 axle tractors that would back up onto the cars to load and unload the trailers at both the east and west ramps.

Despite their "newness" it appears the manufacturers still have not learnt a thing about operators environment in the cab. Why are these things still emitting the screaming whine of the blowers ? I have lost substantial hearing from those bloody things. And WHY do the couple up two locos with the cab in the middle ??? I would never take such a pairing out on traffic, back to the turntable they go, and couple them up with a cab each end.

@@itchyvet no offense, but you can't work for any North American Class 1 RR. If you think you're going to complain about the way the company / ROHO set the power up, and "insist on bringing it back to the ROHO turntable to have the trail unit spun" so they're not both facing the same direction, your smoking crack. There's no reason to and it would be a waste of time and resources. Besides, your conductor wouldn't let you, nor would the ROHO. You definitely don't work in North America Class 1's.

One thing I haven't seen a comment on, I've read through tons and I want to know, is there some kind of NO HORN law in the state where this was filmed at? I noticed after they finally got permission to go and clear the signal, the 3302 never blew their horn when approaching any of the highway crossings, prior to their stopping they did, so why did they not blow for the crossings once they got restarted again? or didn't any even notice that? BTW: I think that this is the downright STUPIDEST, DUMBEST, BRAIN-DEAD IDEA that some idiots came up with, stopping trains from blowing horns and ringing bells at highway crossings, I remember when one of the railroads I used to live next too stopped that from 10pm until 7am in the 1980's, and you know what, train accidents {train collisions} with cars, pedestrians and bicyclists actually more than DOUBLED when this idiotic rule was shoved in place. More fools DROVE or WALKED around the downed gates, any that may have survived to tell the tale all laid it up to, and I quote "I NEVER HEARD THE TRAIN COMING", yet the crossing lights and gates were working, then there were those where the crossing signal and gates MALFUNCTIONED, NO HORN or BELL as the train approaches the crossing to most people = NO TRAIN, again, if the HORN and BELL on the LOCO had sounded, some of these folks could possibly still be alive today! I don't care what the idiots say that BUY or RENT a home next to a railroad track says, I say: "BLOW THE HORNS AND RING THE BELLS!!!!!" These brain-dead morons SAW the RR tracks when they bought or rented that home, the RR was there LONG BEFORE those homes or apartments in 99% of these cases. So don't blame the RR or the trains, BLAME THE REAL CULPRIT in this, the idiot that wasn't bright enough to figure out RAILROAD TRACKS means TRAINS AT ANY TIME OF DAY or NIGHT! If I did not want to be disturbed by trains rolling through all day and all night, or hearing bells, horns or the rattle of rolling stock, I CERTAINLY WOULD NOT BUY or RENT a HOME NEXT TO A RAILROAD TRACK!

There are many, many, "QZ" or "quiet zone" xings throughout America. Generally the busier ones use barriers of some sort to keep drivers from going around the gates. Some even have "pole mounted horns" that direct audio directly at the xings when the gates go down as trains approach. These are a great idea as they limit the "noise pollution" in all directions and put the sound where it's needed.

Agree with you totally on this one. I don't know about the U.S. but in my country it is requirement under Transport Department to blow horns approaching crossings, END OF STORY ! However, common sense would dictate that blowing said horn at 0200 hrs near homes requires a little tact. You are required to blow the horn, but there is no requirement stating how long it is to be blown, so a couple of quick short blasts should do the job. Always worked for us.

Max load per freight car is 143 short ton I.E. 286,000 pounds per freight car now take a unit coal train as an example 100 cars average if using aluminum cars they can load 120 tons per car times 100 cars not counting the rare weight of the cars themselves. West of the Mississippi River they will run them at up to 50 mph. Our clearances over hear are a lot more generous then in The UK or Ireland. Cheers!

I held a train at a stop because there was a bad wreck just outside town, and the fire/EMS had to get through..... I was EMS at the time, I explained to the train crew what was going on and they didn't have a problem waiting a few minutes, after the engines/ambulance got through I waved the train to go..... they saved a life by letting me hold them there a little longer than they were allowed.

Are you for real ???? Diesel loco's, no matter how new or old, will ALL puff out black unburnt smoke, when first moving off. This unburnt diesel will eventually be burnt off when the engine reaches it's designed operating temperature. If they continue to smoke then, or under a full load, they are stuffed and ready for the scarp heap. All out locos were never shut down, (unless required for servicing) for this very reason. If shut down, the constant expansion when operating then cooling down when shut down, posed extreme stresses on the components, it was discovered to be cheaper to have the engine running continuosly maintaining some sort of equilibrium temperature to extend service life.
