Compression ratios plus cam opening and closing timing can change the needed valve sizes, at higher compressions energy is extracted more efficiently before bdc so the exhaust can be opened earlier. This allows a smaller valve to flow the same volume because it has longer to do it. The big benefit is then more room for larger intake valves. Dunno if that's what is happening here but I'm sure Toyota weren't silly about it :-)
@JainZar1
@JainZar1 3 жыл бұрын
I think it's got more to do with the fact, that a cylinder works as a discrete volume pump, the backpressure by the smaller valve might be slightly higher than the larger one, but the gains by the larger intake valve, which is way more time and flow sensitive in NA application, might just be bigger. Engineering often isn't getting the best for every single part, but optimizing the whole product.
@gordowg1wg145
@gordowg1wg145 3 жыл бұрын
But in reality, all that is only partially true. Rod length Vs stroke has a big affect on high rpm breathing, bore side loading (frictional losses, wear and bore failure) and acceleration forces close to TDC. For the same capacity, a large bore and short stroke allows more valve area for the capacity - THAT is the reason short stroke engines traditionally are preferred for high rpm - remember, torque is force x distance - force is produced from the piston area and distance is half the stroke, therefor the theoretical torque and power is only dependent on capacity - it is other factors, such as cylinder filling, rod/stroke ratio, etc, that biases torque characteristics. Heavier crankshafts, con'rods, pistons, etc. have no theoretical affect on torque or power. CBF going further.
@gordowg1wg145
@gordowg1wg145 3 жыл бұрын
@@jzxtrd337 Re-reading what I wrote, there may be some confusion - there are numerous factors in the qability of an engine to produce power/torque through it's rpm range, and it isn't a simple case of over, or under, square design. Capacity is the area of the bore times stroke. Torque is a result of the mean effective pressure on the area of the piston times 1/2 the stoke. Things like rod/stoke ratios will affect net torque, as will the pressure gradient, but that can be applied equally to both engine designs. As I said, large bore, short stroke engines have much greater power potential as they have a potentially greater valve area for the displacement, so they would be expected to breath better. They can also be made with a reduced deck height.

The reason for differing sized diameters of exhaust valve across the 'Jizza' series of engines is because of pioneering work in four stroke cylinder head fluid dynamics by Robert W. Faid of Greenville, South Carolina. His work using some of the first computer simulations of air flow in an engine, and his subsequent discovery of 'Brownian motion', giving him his second Noble peace prize, showed that.....that.....man, i've forgotten where I was going with this.

I have a friend in France who has been importing 2jz engines for 3 years now. I think he has about 14 or 16 of them, and a ton of parts. He's developing a new hill climb race car (unsure if they are really race cars) and the amount of broken parts and things, is astounding. Some people take racing for granted, but the reality is that once you pass the newb stage, things get really, really pricey. All that jamble said, 2jz engines are really nice. I've gotten a new appreciation of the product once i got to wrench around one whilst helping. Initially i was kinda meh, mildly impressed, but once you go in its guts, you really see the various things done to make it a structure stable engine AND why it's such a loved platform. Kinda reminds me of old German engines in a way, obviously with age and tech differences.

**Theoretically** the longer the stroke of an engine, the further the piston rings have to travel in contact with the bore, which increases both the speed of the piston and the potential wear of the piston rings. If the engine is oiled correctly this makes no real difference, but it is something academically interesting. Again, **theoretically**, a short stroke engine means you can rev higher (F1 engines have a very short stroke) because you have X amount much less distance to travel per engine revolution per piston, so less speed for the rods and pistons (because travelling 70 something mm verses 80 something mm in the same amount of engine revs) and less friction for the piston rings. Of course this means the rest of the engine needs to be able to support faster revolutions before the potential gains could be utilised. The extra speed of long(er) stroke engines like the 2jz means that, again **theoretically**, the piston and rod bearings have more inertia to overcome per stroke, due to higher speed, meaning **theoretically** more wear on said bearings. Again with correct oiling this is no issue. The extra inertia created due to the faster speed means that torque figures for a longer stroke engine should **theoretically** be higher, all things being equal. This is often why very high revving engines produce incredible peak power, but lower torque than many people expect. This is also why stroker engines don't produce the power people expect, but incredible amounts of torque. You will often find that in two equivalent engines with similar technology and the same displacement, the one with the shorter stroke will be the more fuel efficient. This is because it has less inherent need of fuel/combustion power to overcome the inherent inertia, so also less torque but better efficiency. That being said, a larger bore also means that there is **Theoretically** more friction overall, because the piston rings have to wrap further around the piston due to the larger bore. This is all extremely academic, because every engineering decision is a balance between competing forces. Engines are just fun ways to explore how energy is transferred, used, wasted etc. Interestingly all of this was and is known by Toyota engineers who know a little about designing an engine, so it makes naff all difference because both 1 & 2J engines are excellent and excellently designed. But from the standpoint of "Oh, that actually makes sense" that is the difference stroke makes.

Thanks for your comment. Do you think this is why we have high reving engines in motorbikes? Because they are light they don't really need that much torque, but rather have more horsepower? Always wondered why high reving engines aren't really a thing in cars. Or is it just a reliability thing?
@joannaatkins822
@joannaatkins822 3 жыл бұрын
@@hondacota4rt That is absolutely a reason why motorbike engines rev higher, and also motorbike pistons and other componentry are generally smaller and therefore lighter, so the engine needs less fuel to make the same power. Power is more of a measure of how fast an engine increases it's revs, not how hard it can twist (that's torque), so being made of lightweight components will allow it to accelerate it's RPMs faster resulting in more power. The more fuel you have to burn to move the piston (and therefore the rest of the rotating mass and moving components) the more torque you will generally have. This means that engines that need to haul more weight will need heavier components, thereby needing more fuel, creating more torque. Unless you have a very light chassis, motorbike style engines don't suit car applications because they aren't tough enough (and torquey too) to survive for as long as an engine with stouter components. A common place for cars with motorbike engines is hill climb events, as the cars used are extremely lightweight. With all this in mind car engines need to be more torquey so their components are heavier, and so it is harder to balance components and stop the engine from shaking itself apart at higher revs. All that spinning and sliding metal is just too heavy to reliably be designed to spin fast.
@Torchedini
@Torchedini 3 жыл бұрын
@@joannaatkins822 It is also just cost, Machining everything to balance and tight tolerances to get to that high rpm just makes expensive production.

LS stuff isn't that mysterious, it's all engineered for purpose. 241 heads have a more open chamber, 243 more closed. Higher comp of 243 makes more power but Joe Dirt can't run it on 91. Then there is another 500 heads and bottom ends in the US that we didn't get.

I Own a few banger Sc300 and mk3s, With the exhaust ports being round, I think its because round hole makes air vortex and it might travel slower like that and dosent mix with other air flow paths well air hits air in a vortex and gets jumbled up? The oval would kinda stop this ? Somthing like the honey comb mesh in front of some MAF sensors ? Great video !!

in fluid mechanics the longer the bend radius of a pipe the lower the loss coefficient so it would makes sense that the ge head would have more desirable flow characteristics assuming the cross sectional area is not smaller. Goleby also pointed out the valve to port length might actually be smaller in the ge vs gte head which would make it even more superior.

Douglas m That’s why proper factory backed full Race Supras ran 3S-GTE engines. Same Yamaha/Toyota design with two less heavy cylinders, one less of the exact same turbo (Except twin-entry this time) and all that weight sits behind the front wheels making the Supra midengine (FME). Check out JGTC Supras

True, but Barra's are cheap, easy to find ones with known history and low K's, and relatively modern technology. Don't get me wrong the 2JZ is amazing, but it's really old now, even clapped out NA's are getting hard to find & ridiculously expensive, and then you have to put more money into them for aftermarket solutions to the old tech (eg the dizzy they talk about here) if you want to get the most out of them reliably.
@Zonda1996
@Zonda1996 3 жыл бұрын
Neg Ative 3S had its merit in motorsport but the actual reason they ran those instead of 2Js in the GT Supras is because the JZ didn’t comply with regulations. Nothing to do with engine weight.
@negativeindustrial

Zonda1996 That’s not what Toyota says about it. Why would the GTR’s RB be acceptable but not a 2JZ-GTE? If it’s about that extra .4 liters of displacement then Toyota would have just used the 2.5l 1JZ-GTE. It’s not, it’s about balanced handling in the corners to make the Supra competitive. They used 2JZs in the first outings the A80 competed in.

What an awesome episode! Thanks to both Al and Christian for sharing your wealth of knowledge on these engines. This might be a dumb question, but Al is probably the best person I know of to ask. I own a 2jz-ge vvti, but don't have the money to fork out for a full set of rods and pistons. If I manage to find second hand rods and pistons, which would I be better off using? I was thinking ge non-vvti from the 2jz, since they're as strong as the gte, but maintain more compression.

OMG about 15:20-16 mins in, I've been arguing these points for years that smaller engines are great too TURBO better under than over 2.3L max it's all about the speed of the revs and how quickly all parts get up to speed, and (Compression). Example old focus st2-3 had 2.5L 5cyl Turbo volvo lump very slow to rev on full load and heavy and now we even have a 1.4L 4cyl turbo astra the does over twice the mpg very good fun not sure about going under 1.2L though any information is appreciated nice video again guys
