Dated, but yeah, lost slack, then slack tightening due to emergency. But, some other speculation suggested a broken coupler, no, not enough slack to engage breaks, triggering emergency. Looked more like a locomotive emergency and modes were switched until equipment could replace the failed unit, which would now be dead load. There was a pause in traction, followed by a surge, triggering the first bang as slack was lost and regained before slack was regained, then enough loss of traction to give a lower bang of traction loss and train rammed into itself and engine at a lower speed. A air hose burp wouldn't go anywhere near that, broken coupler would halt that part of the train, necessitate a jog down the train, jog back to replace a knuckle or subsidiary equipment that is user replaceable, then proceed onward. More sever, you're talking about more weight than two men could be reasonably expected to carry for any properly decent sized consist, which would immobilize the train for a lengthy period of time.
@SnowColdGarage4 жыл бұрын
Yeah if a knuckle broke then there would be too much tension on the air line hose and it would for sure break or snap meaning all pressure in the line would be lost resulting in (A the brakes be engaged due to the Loss in pressure but if you don't know that's just how train brakes work (the trains computer would have recognized the Lost pressure suddenly without the interference or input of a driver therefore putting it into emergency And since the rear half is just kind of on its own after all that broke it would just slam into the back of the other car in front of it because the front half would be an emergency breaking (GOD THAT WAS ALOT I NEED TO RUN MY MOUTH LESS)
@waldwickperson9 жыл бұрын
2 bangs were slack action. Happens all the time. Usually, that means they broke a knuckle when it goes into emergency like this. That smoke you mention was the heat coming off the cars. Usual stuff. Nice video!

+waldwickperson Thank you! I really don't know what it was, but it was louder than what I've ever heard from any other train before.
@waldwickperson9 жыл бұрын
If the engineer throws it in Notch 8, or full brake application (without going into emergency), the slack action can get pretty rough lol
@mbmars019 жыл бұрын
+waldwickperson I understand. The only thing I wonder about is that the train was still accelerating when the 'bang' happened, and the braking came thereafter. Furthermore, there was no reason for an emergency braking, as far as I can tell (that an emergency braking was performed I learned from the communication between crew and dispatcher).
@waldwickperson9 жыл бұрын
Ah ok. If it was on a grade, the tail end of the train probably caught up with the cars, and pushed them more than the engines pulling them
@BenjaminEsposti8 жыл бұрын
+waldwickperson I wonder if any derailments have happened that way. Unfortunately I can't think of any way to implement an easy to use (and reliable) safety system that would prevent that ... (plus it would require changing the braking effort ... so yeah if something goes wrong the brakes might not be strong enough to stop quickly enough in certain circumstances... lol)

@@josephschnoor315 lets just say... they were not supposed to go over 15 mph and able to stop in the half of range of vision... they were up to 25mph at one point and when they realized that.. they went to dynamics and the sudden run in of cars while going into dynamics really hard cause it to shoot the air. if you notice, the conductor told the dispatcher that they never got much more than 10mph. also... at the end, they are going into the siding of palmer yard which is where the Trainmaster (aka boss man) is stationed. you can hear him calling them to stop at the office. When they went into emergency, the Erad told on them and the speed was seen, which wasn't a big deal because it doesn't say what signal you had, but when the dispatcher was called and asked what signal they had, he had to tell the TM that they had permission by the red signal which ment restricted speed. So needless to say... they got ran off for speeding and after the download, they would have seen that the times do not match up from when they started moving after the emergency application and when they talked to the dispacther. He was supposed to tell them if its ok to move or not. they moved without asking so now they have 2 major violations against them. also, you can not go over 10mph after an emergency application until your entire train has cleared that area. there are so many rules that are in place that its easy to miss something especially when you are in a panic like they were. they were trying to hide it and hope that nothing was looked at in depth.

From what I can gather from the radio communication, they were expecting to get permission to pass a stop signal. When they didn't get permission, they hit the dynamic, which caused the all-at-once slack action (bangs). Or the dynamic was activated for them. The dispatcher was asking if it came back up afterward. Then he told them to "keep on movin' according to the rules." Maybe I'm misinterpreting this, but it makes sense.

No broken knuckle, no broken air, though the conductor does mention "dynamic" in radio conversation t around 8:50 mark. It sounds like dynamic braking kicked in, reset and released. First bang, dynamic engaged, second when dynamic released and slack taken back up.
@jamespurks16948 жыл бұрын
kenmelrac What may have caused the smoke?
@kenmelrac8 жыл бұрын
First bang occurred when a locomotive dynamic brakes kicked in slowing the one locomotive but not the cars (slack in knuckles). Second bang occurred when dynamics released (see blended braking). Once the dynamic brakes released, the governor would dump fuel to speed the engine back up to the throttle setting, while the engineer was likely taking the throttle to idle. Smoke could possibly be excess fuel or even dust shaken loose from all the slack action.

Bangs you heard/saw were probably just coupler slack being taken up from the effect of the e-braking affecting the front of the train first, and then again when the head end was nearly stopped the couplers bunched again.
@themauler123458 жыл бұрын
I think I want to agree with both of the comments above me- When you drop pressure to 0 so suddenly in the train brake pipe at the front of the train, like in an emergency stop, it causes a chain reaction that travels down the train from the front. That makes the brakes in the front cars come on first, so the rear cars are probably just pushing their way into the front ones. There's 6 inches of slack in each coupler, so it adds up.

@@mbmars01 if I can bother you with one more question? I looked up the scanner you have and saw it's portable. We have an old table top model, I guess you would call it. With the portable one, how close do you have to be? We live about a short block away from the UP freight and Metra lines in the Chicagoland area. Would it work from our house or do you have to be right up by the tracks? My dad is really excited about this. I appreciate any info 😊
@mbmars015 жыл бұрын
It depends on many factors. One important aspect to consider is the antenna. On my handheld I use a Smiley antenna, which I'm not particularly happy with. I can hear train calls from 1-5 miles, depending on terrain (weather, forest, curves, hills). I also have a stationary Uniden scanner at home which reaches up to 10 miles, depending on weather.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for this excellent quality railroad video!!! Please, what camera did you use and what editing software/program/App did you use? I LOVE the narration in blue text! Excellent to set off the text! (( can you leave it reysed up a little longer...please and thank you. The text is non-intrusive and you get tied up looking at train detail and sometimes dont see the text come on till too late to read it all. Don't think for a second that I'm complaining, for I'm not. Just requesting. I get into looking at detail, especially on the loco's, and forget to watch for narration)) I've been in, on, under, and up inside just about every part of the electrical part of just about all of the GE and GM-EMD Locos in a carrer almost 40 years long...I still get a warm spot in my heart, when I recognize an engine number I've fixed something on! Please keep on railfanning and be safe!

Where can one go for winder ga I love watching trains I grew up in Tucker ga. You ever in winder?
@mbmars018 жыл бұрын
Winder has many places where one can see the track, mostly from parking lots of businesses. The central crossing at the depot is a good spot, too. I'm occasionally in Winder, but not very often. It's not so close to where I live and the traffic layout is simply bad. It's easy to "lose" a train in Winder.

@mbmars014 жыл бұрын
That's not a stupid question at all. Virtually all North-American locomotives in freight service run on diesel fuel, which is converted to electric power to drive the traction motors - that's why these types of locomotives are called diesel-electrics (in contrast, several Europeans railroads prefer diesel-hydraulics). Amtrak and regional commuter railroads operate electric passenger trains on some of their lines. Steam locomotives are only used for excursion or tourist trains nowadays.

Although the answer may vary depending upon the who owns the tracks and also which company is running the cargo. Anyone know of any policies regarding photographing of trains in general? Anyone ever run into many major issues?
@mbmars017 жыл бұрын
It is allowed to photograph trains from public ground. Don't trespass or get too close to the track, though. And yes, someone who takes pictures of trains is always considered a suspicious subject. Be prepared that worried residents call the police. The cops - even if they find it ridiculous by themselves - are supposed to check your ID. Don't hang out for too long in one place, particularly near intermodal yards.
@cdavid81396 жыл бұрын
As a railroader who is tolerant of photographers I concur with your advice. Don't trespass. Even if you are on public property but 'appear' to be trespassing, back off a bit. Police may not be legally able to ask for ids but just be polite, explain you are a hobbyist and be prepared to calmly discuss your rights. Intermodal yards, ports and chemical plants are areas I would try to avoid. They're boring anyway. You might even consider wearing a safety vest with bright colors. Try not to do anything that would make railroad operations 'uneasy' We've all encountered railfans who will take dangerous chances for that perfect shot and it makes some nervous. Also be aware that some railfans like "Millenium Force" give the rest of you guys bad reps with crews. They feel like they're under a microscope and likely to be on KZbin and second guessed by people who don't know wtf they're talking about. Have fun!

Have had it here in Canada where a crew dial in wrong FRED or SBU number do a emergency air test and dynamite another train in close proximity but most likely a kicker account defective portions.

At first the train is hold at normal speed in till the bang! (Sound like a air line gave.) the 2nd once can't be explained the bangs sound the same. It could be a coupler broke and then the air lines broke.

The bangs is slack running in and out. Right after the first bang you hear the PFssshhh of the breaks applying in emergency as the application works its way back. I'd suspect an air hose further up in the consist that came loose. It's common.
