You did a great job!!! Very clear language & excellent lighting. The only think that I would change is the alignment of the new belt on the cams. There are 3 lines on the new timing belt. The should align with the timing marks on the front/rear cams & bottom TDC marks. The arrows on the belt should be on the crankshaft sprocket, not on the cams. This makes it easier to know if you are off a tooth during belt installation. I always mark my old belt at these 3 locations before removal so I can compare with the new belt. Also if you have the arrows on belt in wrong direction the timing lines on belt will be off 2 teeth. I just changed timing belt today on my V6 Camry & referenced your video. Thanks for a great video.

Valuable info, and very well done video! Thank you for the many valuable tips. Good tip on the powerful impact for removing crank pulley. In the past I made a V shaped tool out of two 14" pieces of steel to block the pulley while I used 1/2" breaker bar to get the bolt out. Strong impact is much easier, but it must be top power as you said. Before removing my old belt I made small white markings (w. White-Out) on each of the toothed pulleys and on the edge of belt, then removed the belt and transferred the markings to the new one. Then put in new belt to match all the markings. It was easiest way to make sure timing was correct. Thank you again!

Thank you! Yes that's true you can mark the belts and then transfer the marks. I've never done that but it's a great safety measure like you said!

just a note: 13:15 this is not the correct timing mark to line up with the indicator on the oil pump. the correct mark to line up with the indicator on the oil pump is on the back plate of the crank sprocket. once that is lined up, then the dot on the crank sprocket itself will line up with the bottom line on the timing belt if there is one.

Great Video! I have a question: I tried to do this job before once and failed, because my side engine mount is different than yours ( I have a 2000 Solara convertible.) Mine is a "V" shape instead of the O shape on that vehicle (shown in the video at 6:09) , and it is bolted to the front of the engine just behind the base of the V and you can only access the head of the bolt from the side by going between the mount and the timing belt cover. I couldn't back the bolt far enough to remove it after 1 hour of turning the bolt 1/16" of a turn at a time because the bolt wants to move in between the upright portions that form the "V", preventing me from being able to reach it anymore. Any idea what to do there, or have you encountered this style of engine mount on another vehicle?

Very nice video and commentary. Do the arrows on the timing belt need to face away from the engine (front)? ref 23:51
@AutoFixYT Жыл бұрын
Thank you! So... yes and no. Here's the deal... these timing belts are not directional. So the arrows are there to show you how to put it on if you want to line up the lines on the timing belt with the timing marks. I did not do that because to be honest I totally overlooked thaf step and i just went by the timing marks on the engine. So although nothing will happen if you put it on "backwards", it is more useful to put it on with the arrows facing away from the engine because that will allow you to line up all 3 timing marks with all 3 lines on the timing belt.

What tool can I get to pull the cam pulley? This is the one where you are underneath the passenger side wheel weld.

@cheetosaregoodttv37627 ай бұрын
Hey brother man, watched your video and did everything as you did except I was struggling with the cam shafts and harmonic balancer. Ended up accidentally turning them all individually (which I think messed up some kinda timing) I’m not hearing any clanking or ticking or anything but I marked all the shafts and old belt with the new. Got everything back put together and went to start up, car cranks but didn’t start, took everything back apart and tried to confirm the timing belt was aligned properly with the engravings within the shafts and the covers and everything looked good, put all together and tried again.. didn’t start again, put the old belt back on lining up all the marks from before and gave it another go, car started but it ran like absolute poop. Very high idle, still overheating and car wouldn’t go faster then 5-10 mph, didn’t have any of these issues before only the car was overheating. Doesn’t make any sense to me, from what I can tell the belt is aligned properly with all the marks and all the marks are all aligned TDC. Any advice on what to do? The car starts and runs now but it struggles to start and when it’s running it idles very high (around 1800-2000rpm) and shakes a bunch. Again, no ticking or mocking so I believe valves and pistons are good. Just not sure what’s going on
@AutoFixYT7 ай бұрын
Don't worry about the fact that you spun the cams and crank individually. It doesn't matter as long as you put them back at TDC when the belt goes on. Also, spinning them by hand will not do any damage to the valves even if they hit. You can't spin it fast enough and hard enough to bend a valve, at leats not on that engine. On some yes, not on that one. So first thing i would recommend doing is to check all the vacuum hoses and electrical connectors. If you are sure those are not a problem, you have to be 100% sure that the mechanical timing is set right (as in the cam and crank sprockets on the timing belt) but it seems as though you checked it countless times already (but that doesn't mean you didn't make a mistake several times, trsut me, I've been there before). Another thing you can do is put a scan tool on the car and watch live data. Watch MAF data, upstream O2 sensor data, cam position and crank position data, misfire data, timing advance (sometimes called spark advance). There are so many things you can watch live to see what is happening. Hopefully you're able to do that. With OBD2 cars, scan tools and live data is a must for diagnosing certain engine issues. The fact that it shakes a lot, to me that means it has a misfire or its so out of time that it's causing a misfire. High idle is usually caused by a vacuum leak or excess air entering the cylinder. That can be caused by the timing being off too. There fact that it's overheating however, makes me worry about the head gaskets. Overheat for? How bad did it overheat? And is it actually overheating or is it the coolant temp sensor that is bad and reading high? What is the computer getting for information on engine coolant temperature? If the sensor is not reading right and the computer is getting false readings, it will cause it to not start and run like it should. When coolant temperature is low, the computer will dump fuel in to make it warm up faster. When it's hot it will enter closed loop and will start running off of the O2 sensors and MAF sensors mainly, as in its self adjusting. When it's overheating it will pull back fuel and timing. I hope this helps!

Would you know how to go about doing an EGR valve delete?
@AutoFixYT2 жыл бұрын
Well you just take the EGR components off and plug up any holes. You'll just have a CEL. But in my opinion it's not worth it unless you're going for a maximum power build. The EGR recirculates exhaust gases into the intake so that it can take in less oxygen, therefore use less fuel, and be more efficient while you're just cruising at low throttle inputs. Also, this helps reduce cylinder temperatures which is a good thing. However, at full throttle and during the warm-up period the EGR should be closed at all times, unless it is not functioning properly. So what I'm trying to say is that with a properly functioning EGR valve, there should be absolutely no power loss from the engine. The EGR will ONLY recicrculate exhaust gases when you are not asking much of the engine, and when it's already at full operating temp. Otherwise, it closes. On those cars it's vacuum operated. So the more throttle you give it, the more it closes. As far as I know, anywhere over 75% throttle it's closed and the car is breathing 100% fresh air. Hope this helps!

Curious why you did not use the lines on the belt to match up with the camshaft and the dotted line for the crankshaft? Also saw the arrow points towards the engine. The 3mzfe arrows are AWAY FROM ENGINE
@AutoFixYT2 жыл бұрын
Doesn't really matter how the belt lines up as long as the cams and the crank are in time. The belt is just there to hold everything the way you position it.

I've been trying to get my harmonic balancer bolt off for about 3 hrs now. Tried the impact (450 ft lbs), breaker bar trick, torch, etc... no budging. Any ideas?
@AutoFixYT2 жыл бұрын
Ok so... If all you have is a 450 ft lbs gun, that's gonna be way to weak for that bolt to break free. You need big power for those. Like big big power. Preferably pneumatic on full air pressure. I used an 700 ft lbs gun at 125 psi (rated for 90 psi, so it had more than 700 ft lbs of power, probably close to 850-900 ft lbs). So get yourself a powerful gun. Even if it's electric, make sure it has serious power with a large battery attached (more amp hours will provide more reliable power). Also of you're gonna use heat, keep in mind two things. The first thing is you should replace the bolt after you heat it. You can get away with reusing it but it does weaken the bolt overall. The second thing is the best thing you could use for heat is an oxygen acetaline torch with a fine tip. Heat up the center of the bolt until you get a spot in the middle that's glowing red hot. Then immediately put the gun on and it should come off easy peasy. Try to avoid heating up the harmonic balancer with your flame and if you do hit it with the flame, you might wanna consider replacing it. If you don't have access to an oxygen acetaline torch, use map gas with as fine of a tip as you can find. And try not to hit anything else with your flame. Heat up the bolt head since you can't heat up where it goes I to the crank. Hope this helps!

@@AutoFixYT Thanks man! Just got it off, borrowed a buddies Milwaukee impact. Got a new harmonic balancer as well and going to replace that since I had it pretty hot. Hopefully the rest goes smoother. The Camry has been a good car to learn on.. I only paid 200 bucks for it so there's that too.
@AutoFixYT2 жыл бұрын
@@nolanodonnell9943 Haha wow $200 that's junkyard price if not less lol And nice! Yeah most harmonic balancer bolts are very very tight so you need serious power to get them off. I'm glad you got it though!

@AutoFixYT2 жыл бұрын
Well the first thing I would check is the timing marks. That's what's gonna determine whether it starts or not. That small ground cable won't make a difference. Although it should be plugged in, it won't make it not start. So check the timing and make sure the cam sprockets as well as the crank are all lined up at TDC where they are supposed to be.

It's tempting to use the Rock Auto cheapo kits but it's not worth it. Genuine Toyota/Aisin/Mitsuboshi parts last way beyond the service interval whereas you must change the cheapo parts every four years/60K miles if they make it that far. Of course, if you're selling the car, who cares.

@@AutoFixYT yeah i guess. So I bought OEM timing belt kit with water pump & every single part needed for around 400. Their kit also was same, so 1300 labor is crazy to me it ain’t like im getting the motor pulled 💀😂.
@AutoFixYT2 жыл бұрын
@@masterk5066 Well keep in mind that shops make money on parts too. So whatever you buy them for might be cheaper than what you pay the shop for the same part, even if they get a slight discount. Then there are shop supplies such as brake cleaner, coolant, rags, fluid disposal, and other miscellaneous tools and products they have to use for that repair. Then comes in labor. I'd estimate the labor on that to be $1100 or maybe $1200, and if it takes let's say 8 hours to do that timing belt (should take someone that knows the engine less but let's say 8) that's $137-$150/h. That's an average labor rate. Some shops will charge almost $200/h for labor. It's crazy. But those are usuallu specialized in certain vehicles. Anyway, when you break or down it starts to make sense. Hopefully. Lol. Here where I live $150/h for a good shop is normal. Any less is cheap.
