Jimmy, you are a God sent! I've been having the same exact problem with my 2017 Ford expedition. After replacing a master cylinder, brake booster, abs module, brake pads, rotors, speed sensors and all 4 hubs, your solution is the most logical. It never dawned on me to replace the caliper, hardware (slide pins) and flex hoses but it makes sense. Ford couldn't even figure out what was causing the spongy brake pedal. As always, great video Jimmy! I think the most important part that you replaced was your lines! Those rubber hoses after so many years when you put pressure to them they actually expand so that expansion causes you to have that spongy feel because of the give therefore that was probably the biggest key to getting rid of the spongy feel. I’ve done many that way and it seems to be what the common denominator is in between replacing all those parts together or individually. Thanks for the videos!

@@yamhammer I appreciate the input but maybe I should be more clear. No more bleeding is necessary. Once the brakes are engaged the pedal feels very firm and stops quite well. The problem is the relatively large amount of pedal travel required before brake engagement occurs. This was by design from gm. Does anyone know what the black sleeve on some caliper pins are for??? On my Honda, one pin had a black rubber sleeve that looked swollen. It was binding in the caliper causing it to not move freely in and out. I removed it and now it slides freely. Will this cause a problem? Thanks!
@CraftwerksMC5 жыл бұрын
Jimmy, great points. Like you said greasing those bushings and slide pins and then flushing the old fluid is key to making sure that brake performance is top notch. It's been the same kind of issues experienced in the older square body trucks, especially the 4 x 4 trucks. many people thought they could always just get away with swapping out pads or just surfacing the rotors and going with new pads and then couldn't understand why one brake would drag or have some issue that was always derived from moisture causing the brake fluid to gel and swell or the ungreased pins getting locked and binding up.

I totally agree about using quality brake parts. However, the CRC product is not for everyone. Here is the response from CRC technical support when I asked: "Thank you for choosing CRC Products. In some vehicles, such as domestics, yes, this can be used for the caliper pins. In other vehicles, however, such as Japanese vehicles, it can have an effect on the rubber. That is why some manufacturers will recommend a silicone paste on the slide pins. To be on the safe side, we recommend using a silicone paste such as our dielectric grease for the caliper slide pins, but a brake and caliper grease on all the other lubrication points. Let us know if you have any questions."

After getting the properly adjusted, the pedal went from going to the floor with barely any stopping power to half way down with good stopping power. Next is to do the fronts. 326K still rolling.

Here's some more info: 1500's: Use Akebono ceramic pads (the highest grade). Use RAYBESTOS 580438PER rotors. The rear brakes are largely not in the game. Check for a TSB on the brake proportioning valve. For those with 2500's that use Hydroboost, this is what I use: K3500 DRW rear wheel cylinders, Wagner WC79768 or D28-18274, swap out master cylinder to HD DRW version Raybestos MC39309. You must do both as the rear cylinder volume in the new MC matches the capacity of the new wheel cylinders. The front will still work fine, but the front 3500 calipers/rotors will not fit in the 2500. 2500's: AKEBONO ACT370 pads and RAYBESTOS 580438PER R-300 High Performance Rotors. This applies to 1994 and 1995 CK models, and possibly back to the body style change in 1990?? The same brands of quality parts apply to many more model years.

Everything checks out and all pads have been replaced-twice! . At one point the driver's side rear caliper began sticking and the rotor and caliper got quite hot. Soon thereafter was when the front and rear pads were replaced (ceramic pads this time) but the mechanic said whatever had caused the caliper to stick had fixed it's self as it was no longer hanging up. I had him replace it anyway. This was in 2016 and I also had him bleed and replace the fluid and the pedal remained and is STILL spongy! Any other ideas? I'm all ears!

It was an inherent "problem" with the GMT400 platform and I do agree it is unnerving a bit. As a kid, when I first learned to drive in one of these, it felt normal to me since it was the first vehicle I drove. After I drove more and learned others, I knew this was different. All GMT400 trucks I have driven to this point, including my baby, my 98 K1500 with over 225k, has the same problem. I want to do a full front brake replacement, including the flex line. I hear you get even better pressure from the steel braided lines. Aside that, other people also delete the ABS module as, for most, has become useless over time, and the astronomical amount of money it takes to get it fixed makes people just do without it. Redistributing the ABS lines and putting in a proportioning valve helps as well. I suppose we will see but I am glad you found an easy solution. Keep taking care of that truck!

@@1RoadGarage I have an a clunk happen every now and then, and I have a lot of slop in my 00 Yukon Denali. I know a lot of people have put in a steering shaft from a Jeep XJ.

Did you blead the anti lock, I believe it is a kesle hayes break controller, I wonder if using the hand pump Eliminates the need to go to that process, I kinda doubt it there's a green rubber plug on the controller twords the top remove the plug and blead like a wheel cylinder, instead of a bung to turn you push it in like an air valve.

OMG my 2017 has spongy brakes and when we are trailering our boat and back down the ramp to the lake it scares the s#@$ out of my. Some years ago had a 1998 burb and the brake line burst and brakes failed so I have PTSD about this.

GREAT VID. JIMMY, GLAD TO SEE YOUR WIFE WAS IN IT & SHE LIKES THE BRAKES. NICE LISTENING TO YOUR SUBSCRIBERS BY UPDATING MASTER CYL. YES LUBE IS NEEDED TO MAKE THINGS SLIDE IN & OUT, DON'T CHEAP OUT ON LUBE. ALSO FIRMNESS IS IMPORTANT TOO & IT MAKES YOUR WIFE VERY HAPPY.
