In this video I give a step by step of how I swapped my original OEM thermostat, in my 1995 GMC Suburban with the 5.7L 350, for a brand new AC Delco OEM unit.

Great video Jimmy! Best one out here. I could hardly get to my drain on my 96 K2500 sub then realized it broke off. I said well that video I watched he used those harbor freight hose/clamp pliers. Well I went and bought those. Spilled hardly anything. Great idea! Would never have known they had that! Thanks again!

The nut 🔩 for the deep socket the bolt broke. However enough was left I could but a nut on it. I had to route my wires elsewhere so I had a ground for the tempture gauge. I have a different set up for a 1991 Chevy Silverado with the 350. I have one wire going to the bolt a easy fix for the ground wire.

On an average day, when your truck is completely warmed up maybe even after a frwy run, what is your idle oil pressure and what is your 75 MPH oil pressure? I am using your truck as the "*Perfect*" truck due to the previous owner and your care. Thank you, Jimmy.

I've just done this for my truck it has the same engine tbi 5.7 just a Silverado. I would recommend to replace the stud because i broke mine in half and couldn't extract it. I had to cut it flush with the intake and drill it out and tap a new hole. The stud was welded to the aluminum 😥 Also your antifreeze looks dirty i would flush it. The additives keep corrosion down from all the dissimilar metals in your cooling system.

Good video. Just one thing for all novice gearheads--replace those shitty factory spring things with proper hose clamps. That way, the next time you remove the hose, it'll be a cinch.

About that hose clamp. The one on his engine is the proper one. It will expand when hot without damaging the hose. A screw type clamp cannot expand as temps go up.

I had the same issue with my 99 K2500 pickup. After I replaced the thermostat, the temperature gage noticeably improved but it still looks like it should be a little higher. I also change the gage sensor in my quest to fix the problem but it didn't do anything. Also, the heat started working again after I changed the thermostat. The only other solution I can think of is replacing the cluster which is often malfunctioning.

Right between 210 and the quarter way line is normal. Mine usually runs one tick above the quarter way which is just fine. The stock gauge acutally reads a little bit low and if you use an infrared gun at the thermostat housing it'll be close to 195 even though the gauge looks like it reads lower.

I have a 98 suburban. It had a coolant leak. I replaced the T hose connector yesterday. There doesn’t appear to be anymore leaks but now the temperature gage is all over the place. It will go up to 230 then drop back down to 100. Then it will go back up to 200 then drop all the way to zero. My best guess is it’s the thermostat unless someone has another answer?

Do all, if not, most 95 chevys oil pressure gauge fluctuate when acceleration and slowing down? Mine does, someone else told me his Tahoe does and I see yours. This a common thing?
@AustinHarmon1994
@AustinHarmon1994 5 жыл бұрын
Kyle Marshall that’s normal on every engine with a oil pump. When a engine spins faster it also spins the oil pump faster which causes higher oil pressure. On a lot of cars now the oil pressure gauge doesn’t move because it’s not really showing oil pressure but instead it’s more of acting like a dummy gauge that just lets you know you have oil.

My 97' C1500 suburban with 276K miles stays under the first line(about 175F using torque pro) and on a 200 mile mostly highway trip doing 60mph, I got 18.5MPG. I haven't ever seen it above 180F so I'm wondering if I should replace the thermostat to get the engine temps higher?

Hello-----I hate to bust your bubble but you are making many mistakes. Your cooling water looks like it is dirty and needs to be flushed out. The O-ring type gasket has a slot around the inside of it and it actually snaps over the outside of the thermostat and is in place ON the thermostat BEFORE the thermostat is lowered into position. The FLAT part of the O-ring goes on the DOWN side of the thermostat. There is a little ridge on one side of the O-ring and this goes up, facing the sky. All radiators have a drain cock located near the bottom of the radiator and you should FIRST drain out about 3 quarts to avoid any spillage when you take the housing apart. After you have finished with the installation, pour what you drained from the radiator back in before you start it up. I like that you go to Harbor Freight.

You should use a ACDELCO 12TP1D 180 degree stat (or equivalent) and a 30% mix of pure GREEN Antifreeze in distilled water, plus a bottle of Water Wetter. The Cap should be a Stant 10230 (spring vent closure). Reinstall the bolts in cleaned holes using anti-sieze. Servicing the cooling system: Remove both block plugs, and poke a screwdriver in the holes to clear the scum. I replaced mine with NPT brass plugs with a 1/8" NPT hole, and then use stainless steel hex plugs. Next time, you only need to remove the small plugs, which is much easier. Anti-sieze on all of these parts. Your best bet Water Pump is a Stewart stage 1 or stage 2. Not sure which one, as the pilot shaft and neck size have options. Serpentine belt driven pumps need CCW impeller. I think it would be # 13403 (verify).

Flush that nasty ass coolant out and do not replace it with Dexcool! Flush it with distilled water for about 4 or 5 flushes, then use full strength conventional coolant. If you use 50/50 your mixture will be weak since there's still going to be a little bit of water left in the block. Add about 3/4 full strength and 1/4 distilled water. Then use a coolant tester to see if your mixture is pretty close to 50/50. If too strong, drain some antifreeze and add more distilled water. If too weak, drain and add a little bit more full strength antifreeze and retest. Looks like your old thermostat failed due to the nasty coolant. Better flush it before you're doing a radiator and heater core too.

The hoses to the heater core in my Suburban have been cut by the previous owner. I'm wondering if what you're saying is what happened to the heater core. The temp floats around 175F, so I'm thinking he may have changed the t stat from 195 to 180.

Get a "power flush" done on your engine and heater core. Your antifreeze looked rust colored, not green which indicates the motor and heater core could have a lot of "sediment" in them and your heater core will soon start leaking.
