That "middle gear" you are feeling is likely the torque converter unlocking for a little extra boost.
@latrogeniwile58
@latrogeniwile58 3 жыл бұрын
Correct. The TC will unlock with high MAP before downshift. However it can't operate that way very long before overheating. Run it in D3 and let the ECM do its job. As noted above, it wasn't until 1997 that the lube circuit in the rear of the trans was improved that towing in OD is safe. On flat ground you can get away with it but not with real heavy loads. The RPM gets too low for the pump to deliver adequate oil volume.

But if they continue to vote Democrat, in a few years the Free States of America will become the new Socialistic States of America. It is happening in Nevada nowadays. I am not certain, but I do believe that the 4L60E transmissions have 3rd and 4th gear torque converter lockup capability, so when you hit a small hill in 3rd at 55 you are probably experiencing the torque converter unlock and the revs would go up a few hundred rpms.

"Downshifts slightly, not exactly 2nd gear". That is your electronic torque converter unlocking to give you torque multiplication under increased load. It runs locked (1:1) at cruise, and unlocks under load. The drawback to unlocking is it creates more heat. So you wouldn't want to tow for long periods of time with it unlocked.

I got my windshield replaced and forgot to put nice coat of rainx on. It rained heavy for two hours. I was coming back from Atlanta. Talk about scared to DEATH......😲😵😲😵😲😵. Whipers going FULL SPEED. NEW whipers etc. Every puddle of water felt like I was knee deep. LOL. Total difference once you apply rainx on regular on all glass on your vehicle. You can see its raining hard. Being in construction for close to 50 yrs, had to use the trailer mover several times, know what you mean about finding the sweet spot to drive in. Later, even when I would go by myself, would get a truck from uhaul and off I would go. Many times having to load and unload by myself, would have to take a little bit longer to rest up before jumping off on the new job site. Then got to the position that the company would move me and family many times. When I was driving to the state I was moving to and thinking about the old days: driving 12/14 hours a day to get there, then unload, find the box that had next days stuff and then try to get the sleep that I needed. I would think fondly about the old days and smile! Nothing like that fist shower after a couple or more days on the road!

I went through all the diagnostics. Did all the things... Still had problems. Finally did a hard reset to factory settings, and it works perfect now. Thing is, I did the factory reset first, and it didn't work. But it worked after doing all the other stuff. Go figure.

I did kind of the same move in 2011. My toe vehicle though was a 91 caprice pulling a 6x12 Uhaul. At around 55, it started to get a bit sketchy, anything over and the tail started to wag the dog. It turns out, when I crossed a scale, that I was 500 lbs over capacity in the trailer. The car weighed 3600 empty, and the trailer was rated to 3500 lbs. I scaled at 9200 total...

We are headed to Mission, Texas soon. About 1300 miles from Palm Beach, Florida. No U-Hauls however. Getting pro movers for most things then driving our Genesis, our Santa Fe and the giant Ford Explorer Max. Too cold to retire in Tennessee for us.

Got my 1999 K2500 Suburban ready for the rv and will be taking our first trip in October to the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta! Thinking about adding a K&N air filter kit and possibly a jet chip.... we’ll see. Glad you all made it safe

Welcome to Tn not sure what part you’re in but I’m up around Johnson City. Just please remember we like our old ways and being 10 years behind the curve. That’s how we have kept it so nice and peaceful. I can say moving away and coming back back home I’m more at peace here.

i went to nashville years ago one time in the spring and another in winter to visit some friends who recently moved. as a san diego local whos used to being outside all day my body didnt like the pollen or whatever it was from the trees. my eyes were puffy and watery the whole time and on winter it was just too cold for me. one thing that annoyed me was everyone drove so damn slow. speed limits in cali are a suggestion so going 40mph on the road for miles was torture. i guess im used to one season all year where is 70 degrees in the winter and everything is overpriced

Congrats Jimmy, I too left California 2 months ago and moved to Arkansas, next to Tennessee, much cheaper and more freedom. And better people. I'm a minimalist so I just took me, my truck and that was basically it.

Did you forget that your Suburban has perfectly good ROOF RACKS that would have been good to use so that you could have more room to sleep on the inside? I use the ones on my 95 Yukon to haul lumber all the time. I have lost the rubber rail guards, but that doesn't matter with lumber. America is the greatest place no matter where you settle down, but California is getting too expensive for me. America is beautiful and the brown desert scenery that I see all year long is depressing. I need to see green and it is too cold in Nor Cal for me. Too cold for me anywhere that it snows annually. So somewhere in the South would be right. But then there is the humidity. I hate dripping sweat. So I am thinking Texas. Austin area would be good for me because I am a liberal. And there is no state income tax there. So have a good life in Tennessee. Good on you fir doing the move for your kids.

Glad to see the follow-up trip video was trouble free too! Just curious as to what kind of mileage you got towing... I can't imagine it was great. My '97 (5.7) got about 12 with my trailer and I'm lucky to get 10 with my '99 (7.4) but I can pass anything on the highway but a gas station! Enjoy Tennessee, can't wait to see what's next.

The torque converter comes out of lock up when you go uphill because the motor is under more load if it were to downshift in to second gear it would raise your RPM's way too much causing the motor to race

Gas is $2.50 a gallon here in the 'Deep South' . Good exodus from Cali but you're too far north. Tennessee is turning blue fast. I left TN. 7 yrs ago. The true ' old south ' ( polite and neighborly . Honest and loving ) is still found in Mississippi and Alabama.
