These panfish (bluegill, pumpkin seed, etc) are the secret to bass fishing. Take a good size one and cast it out, bass in minutes. One time I was standing in the water and dropped the line literally right in front of me and a MASSIVE bass came and took the bait right off the line. The second best is yellow perch.

Thanks to this video I tried this with a tiny yellow perch I caught by accident. @0carbothecat09 жыл бұрын
+JwhFishing I do agree setting the hook earlier is a good idea, but it is really tricky. The bass will hesitate if the bait jerks too early, so setting the hook requires a second or two of waiting. Bass won't gulp the fish immediately in some cases, too, so that always takes a second. It makes sense to wait for a few seconds so the bass swallows, but as a fisherman and myself, I honestly would rather appreciate the bass in the water rather than fish for them and harm them in the gut. I love fishing, but dangerous fishing like this that has high chances of great damage isn't always fun. That's the worst- when you're only catch of the day ends up swallowing the bait and you end up killing it when you try to save it.

i grew up by a neighborhood lake where few people fished up in buffalo ny area. suburbs, it was idyllic. for years the biggest i caught was maybe 2 lbs. then one day a huge one jumped in a shallow area and after 50 casts i caught it. it was 6 lbs. after that we caught the big guys regularly. as if it was in our minds. really. the best lures were always topwater, mostly artifical frogs and buzzbaits. sooooo much fun. if u used little sunnies like this then it was guaranteed a good time. one day we found a dead catfish. that was crazy because we never saw a catfish ever, after maybe 10 years of fishing there. there was a carp (maybe the only carp) that had a white top to it. we called him moby. there was a huge bass that hung out by the little dam. his name was harold. now people built houses along the lake and cut off access. but i'm too old to care now. i had the best time of my life. we also had another lake like that where the fish seemed desperate for a spinnerbait. as soon as it hit the water you got a fish. we were so fortunate to have that. can't explain it to people really.

Hey mate I commented on one of you last videos looking for some advice of fishing for yellow belly, but now I'm back in my home town of Gloucester Australia, NSW and looking for some advice on.... You guess it..... Bass fishing, So my friends have this very small pond on there property, about 300m around (so about half the size of the pond you guys were bass fishing in)and it just has a normal mad bank the whole way around it, the owns use white bread to catch them but I'm very in to the whole lure thing, I've already been out there for a totally of 4 hours and haven't caught anything, I've thrown lipless crank baits and a spinner bait with no luck, I was wounding if you might able to tell me some lures that might work better and also I don't the fish have ever seen a lure before so does that matter? I've watch a few of you how to vids but I'm still not sure on lures, but thanks anyway for putting out the amazing vids keep it up and if you could help it would be amazing Thanks

Seeing a lot of debate about waiting to set hook and gut hooking. The longer the wait the more likely you'll land the fish because it takes a bass a second to manipulate the bait fish in it's mouth so that it's swallowing head first. However waiting too long will result in a swallowed hook. Several things can be done to minimize swallowed hook. 1 use the biggest hook with plenty of hook tip exposure that you can reasonably use based on size of fish you're targeting 2 use circle hooks if possible bass and crappie have thin mouths so circle hooks often aren't ideal but are perfect for catfish carp and other tough mouthed fish. 2 use the smallest bait fish you can get away with based on size of targeted fish. When you use a smaller bait you don't have to wait long for the fish to rotate it inside it's mouth. 3 don't fish with a completely slack line. Being able to watch your line help to see when a bite occurs. The gut hook in this video was because of an unattended rod./ lots of slack line. 4 use the tail trim technique. Using scissors trim the bait fishes tail fin down to 1/4 inch then place hook through the flesh of the tail. This allows bass to eat the bait very naturally head first and so minimizes the time you wait before hookset. This almost always results in a hook through the nose or cheek of the bass.

What you need to do is catch some of the bluegill and cut them in half and then once it starts to get dark have a quarter ounce bullet weight and a regular hook and then find somewhere with catfish and cast up against the bank and just wait for the cats to come. I caught a 40+ pound flathead over the summer doing this

@iFishMNchannel8 жыл бұрын
Just to chime in on the hookset timing debate, personally I set the hook as soon as I have my pole in hand and am ready, you will find that the majority of fish will be hooked perfectly, and the few you do miss are usually small fish that could not get the bait in their mouth and I will loose a few small fish any day to save a big one from being hooked deeply.
@1Rod1ReelFishing8 жыл бұрын
+iFishMN yeah I think ur right about this, I never fished with bluegills before and after the gut hooked fish, I'll be setting the hook as soon as they bite from now on

Another tip is when you have one on and you have hook the bluegill through the tail once the bass has it don't set the hook let the bass swim with it and make sure ur bales open and when the bass stops swimming that's when you can't set the hook

The problem with using live bait this way is getting the hook caught way down the fishes gullet...as we saw on several of these bass. It's not a clean hook up like you'd get with lures or even smaller live bait. Hopefully the fish were okay. Mike's pretty good at doing hook-removal surgery.

I've never seen bass activate so aggressively for bluegill! I've never seen them respond like that in NY or MA - my guess is that you're down south somewhere where they grow bigger and are not intimidated by that wide profile. I HAVE seen bass be desperately hungry and stunted in golf ponds tho because of the limited structure which leads to a limited forage base - maybe bluegill are the only forage they've got.

i use Bluegill's as bait all the time here in NY and they work wonders on any pond by me lol

Is it a very small pond where there isn't much else for the bass to eat?
@chrisgarone3498 жыл бұрын
Its not huge but i wouldnt consider any of them small. As for food, they got sawbellies,varying minnows,blugill,perch, and ive found smaller bass inside them. It really all depends on the size of the bluegill/sunfish that you use. I personally only use ones less than 5inches in length. That way almost all bass can eat them, not only the big ol lunker one.

Once, I caught a bass using bluegill. The bass ate 3 bluegill. It weighted 6 pounds!

Another great video, Mike. Any idea what the coldest water temperature is for bass to still be active? I think the season is nearly over up here in CT. Temps overnight just started dropping down into the 30s so is it safe to say they're calling it quits for the year?
@1Rod1ReelFishing9 жыл бұрын
+LB1280 depends on the water temp not air temp, and as the water temp is dropping I catch bass in water as cold as 42 degress. Below that in the 37-41 degree range I struggle to get bites
@LB12809 жыл бұрын
Yea the water is dropping pretty low about now. The air temp tonight will be 28 so I'm sure the water temp will be in the 30s. Do the bass head toward deeper water at this point in the year?

Hey i have watched almost every video that you have posted. Just wanted to tell you that you are a great bass fisherman. I also wanted to ask what kind of line do you use? What kind of line do you prefer?
@1Rod1ReelFishing8 жыл бұрын
+Kenzie Weaver thanks for watching bro I appreciate the support! I use different lines depending on the conditions, I also list the line used in the video description though!
