Some Helgrammite tips. Hook them straight through the first collar. They will stay on the hook, and catch multiple fish. The record at a friends camp was his grandmother caught 8 bass on one helgrammite. Also you said you kept getting snagged. Helgrammites will crawl under rocks on the bed. The trick is to pull off their grabbers on their rear end. They use those two little grabbers to hold onto the rocks. If you spin these off they can't grip the rocks well, and it reduces snags. Don’t know if it will help anyone but the best way to hook helgermites is to pick them up from behind the head and hook it under the it’s head on the bottom part They also work really good for cat-fishing

Hellgramites are like crack for bass, I've never failed to catch one while using them. We call them toughys... not sure where the name came from, I always assumed it was because they're vicious little bastards. I didn't know they were out that time of the year though, we typically catch them in the spring.

I use those all the time. When you are rigging it, hold the helgramite with your thumb on top of its chompers and your index finger below it. If you pinch tight enough, it won't be able to pinch you because your fingers are touching too tightly. I usually rig it by going through the skin just behind the collar shell with the point going towards the head. Then exit the hook point through the hard collar before the head. The benefit of hooking through the collar is that it hugs the hook tightly so the hook won't rip out and fish can't just nibble the fish off. These creatures are very hardy and if you rig it the way I mentioned, you will be able to catch at least 3 fish per bug.

I hook them the same way. I once caught a bass when the helgramite pinched the bass on the lip! It held on all the way in. I didn’t realize the bass wasn’t hooked. Those things pinch hard!
