I get my hands on Audi's entry level Electric car, their Q4 e-tron in 50 quattro trim. Is it worth considering, does it get close to it's claimed 298 mile range?

EV's will never compete with the organic sense of an ICE but they are getting better. The Q4 is purely meeting the segment competition head on. I disagree though about being boring to drive, just out of a G30 and replaced with the etron 55 sportback, I was somewhat worried making the change from a car to an SUV let alone full electric but boy was I surprised.. 4 months in and far far superior on all levels to the 5 series. Done nearly 4k nationwide and its surprisingly great around country lanes giving the 2.6T mass. Audi do skimp in areas nowadays and clearly evident in this model but ev's are horses for courses. The network is vastly improving too but still a good distance to go. You need to appreciate this car as a practical all rounder first and foremost. Love the content Joe, bought my G30 influenced by your review in 2018.

For everyone saying that you don’t want drum brakes on an expensive Audi; You just don’t need disk brakes as the electric motor basically is a gigantic brake. Unless you have a 600hp electric car, anything will do if you have good brakes in the front and an electric motor. In order to democratise electric cars this kind of cost-cutting makes total sense.

Drum Brakes - actually it’s a pretty smart move from Audi. Most EV disc brakes rust as they are never used, most braking is done by the electric motor. This is rear mounted on the Audi and they are designed to last the lifetime of the car. Ask a Tesla driver how often he needs to replace his discs?
@jimyoung3896
@jimyoung3896 3 жыл бұрын
EVs do most of their regen on the rear axle and consequently the friction brakes get much less use than they would on an ICE car. This reportedly leads to corrosion of the rear brake surfaces and can result in mechanical issues (See Bjorn Nyland's video on his M3P rear brake problems). Although drum brakes may seem to be a backward step perhaps they make sense in the new world of EVs.

Exactly this My Polestar 2 doesn’t use the wheel brakes until 1.1g of braking force is applied which means the discs can go rusty for a while. People should understand EV braking before they start getting all excited about older tech brakes.

Drums on the rear at first I was skeptical, but after owning a Volvo XC40 Recharge with rear discs that are constantly rusting and seizing I think the drums while it may save them money are the right decision. Volvo had to update its software to make sure the brakes enable a bit even in regen to prevent the rotors from oxidizing. I am on my 3rd set of rear pads and rotors in less than 2000 miles.

Great video, honest and well presented. Prior to launch I thought the Q4 was the next car for me, not convinced now having seen one in the flesh. Also was lucky to drive the etron GT Vorsprung back in June. Very compelling car, but I'm on the fence about switching away from my B9 S4... Whilst I know the S4 isn't the pinnacle of the ICE generation, it (for me at least) is a difficult car to move away from into the EV world (especially as my target car is double the list price of the S4 when I bought it)....

Shocked Audi started tapering the power of peak demand so early. Given the roads it would be impossible but a uniform test of 113kmh in a relative short circuit to zero out elevation changes is a better test. If the tech is helping you to stretch distance driven then it’s not revealing it’s efficiency and true capabilities or lack thereof. Great review that helped put this EV in to perspective.

That’s a great video Joe ! One thing I noticed, the speedometer say 160 mph, but I’ve read the top speed is less than 120 on the top version… Being an electronic dial it looks really bad because they can’t say they use the same speedometer for all models !!! Anyway I find that car one of the best EVs currently available, only let down by not having a front boot and by a Skoda Enyaq which looks even better, has the same attributes and it’s cheaper… but those four rings add value to it so it is what it is. The new Hyundai Ioniq 5 seems to be also a strong contender but the aesthetics are not for everyone…

Enjoyed that video Joe on the new Audi E-tron 50. Real road use and range is essential for potential buyers. Confess was nervous for you eking out that last mile on zero range. As you say familiarity will come and knowledge of reliable rapid charge access will relieve some of those “new” worries. Interesting one of your viewers regarding the drum brakes and that does make sense. We are now so accustomed to discs all round we feel cheated by what “appears” as a cost cutter by manufacturers. However disc brakes are prone to rusting if not used and definitely costlier to replace. Used on some great ICE cars like Ford Puma but also they use conventional cable handbrake. Not a fan. Great video looking forward to next one.

Personally I wasn't blown away by the ID4, especially the interior, the Enyaq from Skoda is excellent though, and if looking for a more reasonably priced alternative to the Q4 e-tron the Enyaq is a great choice in my opinion. In terms of quality of interior materials the Q4 is excellent, the touch point plastics are all soft, of course there are some harder plastics in zones that matter less but this is the same on BMW and Mercedes.

Good review apart from your petrol head "I loved the Porche" mentality. You need to divorce what you love about petrol or high performance diesels from electric vehicles. I have a Maserante Levante S (you can love it or hate it - I like that it is rare - not another Macan/Cayanne/RRsport etc) But we are swaping the wifes Q2 for one of these. As a family runaround it makes huge sense - but I would struggle a bit having it as the only family car. It's a lovely thing to drive and a lot more 'familiar' to operate than the Tesla 3 we tried (we were considering a Y). We are a privileged 2 car household but my wife still needs to do 100 mile visits to her elderly Mum This works perfectly.. . For a ski trip to Tigne I'd take the Maserati

The related Volkswagen ID.4 also has rear drum brakes. Unlike ICE cars, EVs have regenerative braking so they don’t have to rely entirely on rear brakes to stop. Plus, according to Volkswagen, disc brakes drag on the rotor and create enough rolling resistance to cut into the car’s mileage over long distances. Companies want to squeeze out every mile they can get on a single charge. Disc brakes also wear out twice as fast, are more expensive to fix, and release loads of brake dust into the atmosphere. Disc brakes simply aren’t cost effective for the company or the consumer.

Great review as always Joe, 2 months ago my wife and I went car shopping, I went straight to the BMW dealership and ordered a 21' M550i in Individual Tanzanite Blue, and she went for a Audi Q5 2.0T petrol. =( You can relate to my perspective on what a car should be, for her it's just another appliance. How do you compare this Q4 etron to a petrol 2.0T Q5? Should this be on the radar in 3 years for her? Let's say if your missus asked for your input, Q5 vs. Q4 etron??? What would you recommend for her? TIA

The M550i is genuinely a wonderful car. Accompanied a friend who test drove one and got to drive it myself too. Fantastically well built, soothingly comfortable and all the performance you'd need on the road. A brilliant all rounder. Sadly, can't afford it myself :), but I hope you enjoy yours.

@@Kelveron my heart wanted the M5 as a daily, but I went with my head. (Living in NYC the potholes eat away at your vehicles suspension and wheels) so I went with a more subdued option. Also, at the rate the cost of gasoline is increasing here, I won’t be able to afford it much longer either 😆

so one of these or a brand new rs5 . That pricing is just insane man. Drum brakes, no cover for the door trim and cheap plastic everywhere. Plus you don't even get the government grant. This car should be £45,000 maximum for the vorsprung model.

EV’s, no real way around them and I don’t really mind. They aren’t exciting or fun, but 99% of my trips are boring motorways, city centres or with carsick passengers. Fiscal reasons will force me in an EV. I just hope to get decent range and a car that can stick to the roads at a decent speed. The range tests aren’t that useful to me. Range at 125 km/h is what is interesting to me. At lower speed I won’t spend over 2 hours in the car, but on road trips I will often cover 800 to 1200km. 300km at European motorway speeds seems like a good minimum. More would be nice. Hoping a BMW i4 40e fits in the budget.

I think it's just too much, considering you can pick up a barely used E-Tron 55 for around 50k. Sure it has 30ish less miles range, but I think it'll be far more comfortable than this, which is the whole point of a big SUV isn't it? Not that I can afford either!

Sorry Joe, I've been a long time admirer of your output but I think you missed the mark here. What really does happen when you have no charge that's what I (and a lot more people I think) want to know and was expecting from this title. Do you have any power at all to work lights etc? That dark stretch of road you were on could be dangerous without them. A bit more real world would have been appreciated and helpful - a lot of us are being pushed towards electric and will no doubt be forced into them at some point. Rant over - please continue with the vids!

The title says "what happens at zero range", I ran the Q4 until it had a displayed zero range. It appears it will continue for a few miles.

@@JoeAchilles1 OK then, I'll try a different way - any chance of testing it to no power? Did you tell Audi what you were planning on doing? Did they say "don't" ? If that's not what you're about then no problem but I did think you were one of the more genuine You Tubers.

Nice real world test but as you say nicely finished and equipped vehicle but boring to use, and too expensive for the masses to drive, hopefully prices will drop sooner rather than later 👍👍👍👍

Great vid again, Joe! I agree that those drum brakes are a nono for a car like this. I mean, EVs are supposed to demonstrate progressive thinking, so why in the world would anyone think we'd be OK with a brake from the time of my grandpa is beyond me :) Styling-wise, I think the sportback is nicer, but I just cannot swallow the rear wing spoiler on it, I looks like a Honda Civic from 2005.

EV’s very rarely use the mechanical brakes. All about the motor re-gen braking. My Polestar 2 doesn’t use the wheel brakes until 1.1g of braking force is applied which means the discs can go rusty for a while.

The range topper, falls short on range. In 2022, they should be selling it with range of at least 350 miles.

drum breaks are a deal breaker, not to mention the lack of range compare to the competition. Hard pass. VAG group still needs to play catch-up to the competition, they are at least 1 generation behind.

The whole battery power car thing needs an injection of honesty regarding so called green credentials that include all pollution created from rare earth metal mining, battery build and total car life and disposal at end of life. Better off for the planet to avoid new, maintain and keep your present car if in good condition if you want to do your bit. If you need a new family motor like this consider a Citroen Berlingo 1.2, get a much more useful car, save lots of money and help save the planet into the bargain. Best thing about battery cars is the contribution to clean air in conjested areas but bear in mind it's transferring emissions to the point of power generation . Not so long ago we were persuaded to buy diesel cars by the estabishment to do our environmental duty. Don't trust them and do your own research. In my opinion £60k+ could be much better spent.

It’s not just about the size of the grille, it’s the style of it, and quite frankly, the big BMW grilles look hideous. Audi’s aren’t great, but they do look better than BMW’s. As for drum brakes, even on lower powered cars, I can’t believe they’re still a thing.
