Chipping a large model like this can be time consuming and exhausting. Luckily there are techniques that can make this process faster and easier. As you might know chipping is a process that employs several techniques and today we’ll take a look at the first step - light colored superficial chips painted using a sponge, paintbrush, and speckling.

Night shift I have just one more question brother, is it better to use acrylics or enamels for chipping? I have heard different things but would like to know your take on it. I have a hull red, green, and dark tan 1/6 king tiger and I don’t know what a good chipping color would be but I assume something light. Thanks again Night Shift!

@@weepweep2225 well if the base color of that KT is oxide primer/hull red, then I'd use that to chip both camouflage colors. Then I'd use a lighter version of that, something like salmon... as a light version of oxide primer, and then add dark grey steel chips into those light colored ones.

I still use it everyday but i do a lot of hand chipping It has its place it's another tool in the tool Box.

Agreed, nothing is worse then some guy talking over a video of a finished model telling you "well here's the model after I did the chipping". These Bob Ross of modeling type videos are much more helpful when learning new techniques. Andy's Hobby HQ is another really good channel for learning, you should check him out.

Sponge works great - use different sponge consistencies in your arsenal for different effects and chip sizes. Caveat - super easy to get carried away and put on way too many - super hard to get rid of if the acrylic has dried. Also I liked the beginning summary of the steps coming in the video - would be really useful at the very end of your model to have a complete summary of all the techniques used in closing. Once again great stuff - keep 'em coming Martin.

When I am building my 1/16 scale Hooben T-55 - I bought some "stone textured" paint from the hw store since I thought it would make a good natural looking effect on the area behind the road wheels, sure enough it looks pretty good, so long as you use it very sparingly! As, you can always use the other effects over it later.

I use sponge technique a lot. Usually 4 colors, a super light base color, dark grey, dark rust, light rust, the last 2 in very specific areas. Then I do brush chipping. It takes a long time but I love the added depth. And I'm with you on building models, have fun. Even trying to do something from a picture, you have to exaggerate a little. If people painted models like the real thing? They would have some seriously boring looking models. As someone who crewed Bradley's for 10 years, all kinds of things happened to paint jobs, just depends on where it was used. Can't wait for the panther...hope it's a Wiking one...wink...lol

Okay so i do models on videogame craft/vehicles and part of the scenes made for them involve other, less focused on, models of trucks and tanks. I like to throw a lot of unnecessary and unrealistic shading on the sections closest to the primary figure so it stands out a significant amount more. I tried this sponge technique for those kinds of shades and it works FANTASTICALLY

I've never really been convinced about chipping as a whole; to me it just looks a bit like drybrusing but gone OTT... However, this appears to be quite subtle (from what I can see on the vid anyhow) so it might be time to go and tear up a sponge (ssshh, don't tell the old lady that I'm abusing her sponges) and give this a go. Well I have to say it again, but just you wait until you see the second layer of dark chips and especially the rust tones on this thing :) Eastern European Ghetto Solution (EEGS) is a state of mind - if something exists as a commercially available product, then instead of buying it, you make it yourself from anything you can find laying around.

Again a great video, thanks for going so much in the details, it help a lot for understanding the technique. With oils, I have the reverse issue: when I try to remove too much of it, the acrylic under coat (Ammo by Mig) is starting the wear off, sometimes even the primer). Strangely, it is quite hard when it is on the airbrush parts! Do I need a varnish protection layer?

It’s always good to create that varnish barrier against enamel thinners. What you describe happened to my friend as well. Tamiya lacquer paints are very sturdy, they’ll hold against anything even without varnish

I realize you are doing a "demonstration", but on most painted surfaces paint does not tend to chip on the large flat areas. I see paint chips on the edges and, oddly, the inside corners where 2 surfaces meet. Now with vehicles that throw up rocks and stuff, the leading surfaces may chip.

Well... grey. Dark grey for the first layer of light chips, and then some dark brown/dark rust for the deep steel chips. If it's an aluminium vehicle, then just silver and you can skip the first light layer.
