Thanks for reacting to the wonderful talent of John Farnham playing the role of Jesus Christ at this Easter time. So many people forget or do not know what Easter and the given holiday is all about !
@artistjoh6 ай бұрын
Nice for you to recognise what Easter is all about, its name coming from Eostre, the goddess of springtime, and the cause of spring equinox celebrations. Or are you talking about the celebration of the rebirth of Innana as celebrated at the spring equinox thousands of years before the Jews, by the ancient Sumerians, and the way the very fecund rabbit, and eggs represent that rebirth, and are still a central part of Easter today, some 5000+ years later? Or are you referring to Passover, which occurs roughly at Easter time and god in Leviticus commands his people to observe? Of course it is likely not a coincidence that Passover occurs around the same time as the rebirth of Innana, and the Jews probably usurped an existing holiday for their own purposes. A lot of the Jewish religion comes from Sumerian mythology. Of course Everyone Jewish observed Passover, and the non-Jews celebrated Easter, and the early Christians couldn't stamp out either celebration so appear to have at some point glommed the Jesus myth onto the ancient spring celebration, possibly as early as the end of the first century. It appears they couldn't stamp out eggs and bunnies, however, and they are still with us, just like the very ancient Sumerian practice of Christmas trees, and the Roman practice of gift giving and goodwill that still exists long after Christians glommed the Jesus birth story onto the winter solstice celebrations that the Christians couldn't stamp out so they rebranded it as Christmas, and simply tolerated the trees and gift giving. Christians usurped those ancient pagan holidays in a similar way to how the Jews usurped Sumerian mythology. It is nice for you, however, to recognize the real pagan purpose of the holiday, and the rebirth of Innana, although I am not sure what it has to do with a musical about a Johnny-come-lately religion.

The Album ( which proceeded the stage show ) was huge success being #1Album of 1971 , beating Tapestry to top spot. Ian Gillan of Deep Purple sang the role of Jesus and so sang Gethsemane , same year he sang Smoke on the Water Yvonne Elliman was Mary Magdalene and appeared in Movie where she sang I Don’t Know How to Love Him ; Yvonne would later have huge hit with ; If I can’t have You from Saturday Night Fever

While this is amazing, it was extraordinary live!! I wasn't at this particular performance, but the entire show was extraordinary. They decided to do a rock arena style version of JCS, instead of the usual period costume performance. So they cast a whole list of people who were already household names in their own right. John Farnham, Jon Stevens, Kate Ceberano, Angry Anderson, John Waters, Russel Morriss. They all had strong careers in Australia before this show. I also love the revolving stage, at certain camera angles it looks like Jesus is floating..... Another great reaction Sue.

There's a great video comparing this version of the song to the one John Legend did a few years ago. And John Legend's version sounds so weak by comparison it's almost laughable. And, yes, I'm an Australian and completely biased. Farnham is a God here in Oz.
