@LAST CALL I don't use a thermometer, I just heat it so that it's slightly hot to the touch, you just want the paint to be slightly soft so that it has some flex:-)
@1st_track_dents4 жыл бұрын
@LAST CALL I don't believe so, You can get certified but it's not essential. As long as you are set up as a proper company with the right insurance policies in place etc, you are good to go. Maybe some insurance companies or car dealerships may require a certification but I don't do work for any of those organisations so wouldn't know.

At the dealership I worked on the outskirts of Chicago in 2003, the manager of the dealership had such an eye for any body with that was done in any vehicle back then. I'm a panel beater/sprayer and while I do 99% of the knocking out I then go and throw filler at it, been doing the same for 38yrs! I think I will give paintless a go when the right sort of job comes in, I know I can get most of the way with just bits of wood but I'll have to make a few tools up. Excellent video.
@1st_track_dents3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Richard! yes give it a try, that's how I started back when I was a panel beater and the best thing about being a panel beater is that you have nothing to lose by trying to use PDR because if you don't get it right, you were going to fill it anyway! After a lot of practice I was able to start finishing my repairs without using filler and save it from being painted. Its also good to be able to use the PDR techniques even if you are still going to fill it as it still helps reduce the amount of filler you need and can speed up your repairs! With your vast experience I'm sure you would get a feel for it quite quickly 👍

Wow.. camera takes no prisoners. Very good repair! Although dont know why you didnt buff the scratch off after removing the bulk as would have made it easier to see during the repair?
@1st_track_dents4 жыл бұрын
Good question, if the paint mark was a paint transfer mark I would have polished it off from the start. The clear coat lacquer was scratched here and it needed to be flatted down with fine paper. As there is very little paint on these new cars, if I tried flatting the scratch when the dent was only partially out, the bodyline would still have been uneven so it would have been very easy to burn through. I didn't really cause me a problem with viewing the dent, and it is better to flat the scratch at the end when the panel/bodyline was perfectly straight so that the scratch could be flatted down evenly therefore minimizing any further damage to the paint surface:-)

Hi, a dent like that normally takes between 1 and 2 hours, if I'm doing multiple dents sometimes i'll stop and move onto another one for a break:-)
@elguapo15074 жыл бұрын
@@1st_track_dents That was a quick reply..thanks for that! I've never tried to repair bodywork on cars but you must get a great deal of satisfaction getting those shapes and lines back as though you've never been there. As an aircraft engineer our repairs can be pretty unsightly in comparison. The thing that fascinates me is that you apply the force in the right place, direction and amount without stretching the material. I can't get my head round that. Surely the dent itself causes the material to stretch? Does it?
@1st_track_dents4 жыл бұрын
@@elguapo1507 After a while you can just look at a dent and tell if it is stretched or not. Luckily this dent wasn't too bad. Mild steel has a sort of memory so I just need to push it back to where it needs to go, however Aluminium is another story! Being an aircraft engineer i'm sure Aluminium gives you a headache now and then too!
@elguapo15074 жыл бұрын
@@1st_track_dents I get you! Well, we have sheet metal guys for the repairs who far better understand the structural side of things rather than me. The repairs are always patched using rivets or similar types of fasteners depending on the type and place of repair on the aircraft. You generally don't push out a dent because of the structural integrity of the fuselage. Pressurisation requires the fuselage to expand and contract without stress points that would lead to fatigue and potential failure.

*The new tools made the audio better, probably less annoying to the customers as well. The lighting was too bad though, I'm not sure if it was so you could see the dent better or just the weather/camera set up.* See if that guy can create a heat gun for PDR with specific settings for paint with temp control reading and thermostat.

I have to turn the exposure down on the camera when doing close up shots as you will only see light glare from the PDR Light. There are schools here but it takes a long time and it depends on the teacher you get. I wanted to get someone who really did work with it like you do. this was legit; a few months ago I wouldn't have understood why the high spots would have to come up to push the crease out, but the metal was stretched when the crease was put in, and when you are tapping the high spots back down, you are actually shrinking the metal back. This was awesome. I haven't seen these tools before, but I have seen the flat stick before but someone made one made of an old file lol. It's the first time seeing these knockdown tools, though. that's awesome that you can change to a tip a little more blunt as you get most of the high spots out. Very legit techniques. Using the heat to make the paint more flexible was brilliant!

Great work definitely different on older cars alot different repair but I'm thinking to learn this u can practice on pop cans vary thin metal lite taps not hard taps lol the hard dents like creases is what I have problems with and knowing were to tap is the skill
@cleon_teunissen4 жыл бұрын
Out of sheer curiosity: The thing that surprises me is that when you are tapping on the outside (bringing down micro-highs, as you call them), the taps are so lightweight I wouldn't expect them to have any effect. My expectation is that the paint layer has far less strength than the sheet metal. So my expectation would be that any tapping on the outside would either do nothing, or if it does it would damage the paint rather than working the metal underneath. (As you point out: the paint is somewhat flexible, otherwise it wouldn't suvive the denting in the first place.) Could you do a demonstration (with some scrapped body panel) that even tapping that lightly will eventially produce a dent (if you keep tapping in the same spot.) Another question out of curiosity: are there any circumstances where you would use tapping on the inside of the panel? Of course that would require complete access to the inside of the panel. If you would have that kind of access, would tapping on the inside be an option?
@1st_track_dents4 жыл бұрын
The paint (Lacquer) is essentially a plastic hardened film so really, when you are tapping it with another plastic object they kind of cancel each other out. The paint surface is quite hard and can take quite a beating. The only time it really marks the paint is if the panel has had some paint repairs at some stage and the paint isn't cured properly or there is some filler or bondo lurking underneath! or sometimes on a very hot day when there is no shade when the paint is soft. I rarely tap the inside unless I am pushing out very large damage that needs a push on a strong bodyline. I would rather make several small taps than one big tap as you have more control, that's why it looks like my taps are soft. I hope that answers your question :-)

Thanks for your videos - and how complete and full they are with detail and info. I find many PDR videos on here seem to skirt over stuff - I get the feel that they aren't wanting to give away trade secrets. You seem the opposite! I have no interest in going into PDR as a business - I doubt I'll ever get good enough - but only for fixing my own cars I work on. You've gave me confidence and I've had some superb results so far! What about shallow bonnet dents though? My Clio is littered with them from where folks have been pushing on the bonnet to close!! I was going to try glue pulling / tapping down since none of them have sharp edges - is it just a matter of working away at it?

If they are on the bonnet, usually the access is quite good from behind so it would probably be better to push them out. Although there may be some dents behind the braces, so you could try glue pulling those ones, Glue pulling is always last resort for me, I like the control of pushing, unless I am trying to reduce some large damage:-)

@@1st_track_dents - excellent - cheers for the info. Thankyou once again for the videos, the time and effort in the editing alone must be massive, never mind the skill you are showcasing. Huge respect!

@@PurpleHelmet Yes the video editing takes a long time and like PDR I get bogged down with all the detail. That's the problem when you do PDR as a job, you start looking at the detail in everything! 😂
