I had a timing updated chain tensioner installed in my 09. Was still getting rattles on warm-start rattles later. VCDS showed chain may been stretched on cam. Block 93 showed -4.50 cam phase adjustment. I did research, bought tools and did the chain too. Also I found the cam bridge screen broken and sitting in an oil passage. HIGHLY recommend doing chain as well so you dont have to go back and open this shit up again.

I think it would be REALLY interesting to see Deutsche Auto Parts find a 'beater' TSI and buy one of those $70.00 ≥ TSI Chinese made timing kits--tensioner, chain, rails, etc--install it and see how it holds up! I cringe when I come across people that have left reviews on those kits and I wonder how much of that is stereotyping because of Chinese manufacturing.

Another risk is damage to the lower timing gear or harmonic balancer if the splines on the faces are not correctly aligned. I have read stories of damaged parts and an out of time engine when it didn't go back together properly.

They're great fun, but there's 3 or 4 critical points of failure: Chain tensioner Water pump PCV plate mid 13s and below were installed with this faulty tensioner. I blew one motor that way (combined with poor oil maintenance). Replace or buy one with the updated one The water pump was known to fail, but there's aftermarket solutions that aren't bank-breaking PCV fails before 100k. Getting an aftermarket catch can that *doesn't replace the PCV,* but rather fixes it (like the ECS Tuning or APR ones) is the accepted solution, but it's also not too bad to just keep replacing ($100) if you don't want to empty an oil catch can. There are other problems (coils if you have a tune, RMS can leak...), but it's by far my favorite car I've owned. Proper maintenance isn't an option with these, though. I had a Scion tC before and I loved it, because I could run it ragged and not worry about it. 13k miles with no oil change? No problem. Mk6 GTI? Not so much.

You do this so weird. The trans and subframe mount are enough to hold the engine. So it’ll hang with those two. I remove top coolant line and swing bottle to the throttle body. I disconnect the fuel and evap and swing to the intake. All that room really helps Also that lower cover should have the rtv put on in a line on the edge of the slits

I actually just did an oil change and only have 100 miles on that oil “it’s Amsoil full synthetic” so I’d hate to drain it to see how far my main timing chain plunger is out. If I pull the rubber plug to see the tensioner will oil come out? Or will all the oil be below that point? I ask because VCDS showed in Advanced Measuring Blocks the following:,”Camshaft Adaptation Bank 1 phase” = -6.90° I heard that spec is -5 to +5° so according to vcds my chain is stretched but I don’t have misfires or any P0016 codes.. the car was at operating temp when I scanned and only has 71k miles on a 2013 A4 B8 looking to see if I can remove the upper cover to measure as well as pull the tensioner inspection plug to visually see the plunger without draining oil.. thanks any help on this would be very helpful.. great video Paul

Thanks Paul-Great video-I'm ordering the parts to do this DIY on my 2009 Audi A3. What's not clear as your arm was blocking it-was how to set the tensioner clip after you pull it. It appears it needs to be re-inserted on the piston but there's no visibility as to how or where it's placed on the tensioner/pully. Seems like a critical step. Please clarify for me! Thanks. As always-I appreciate the excellent videos and parts support from you and your team.

Are you sure you're supposed to walk the tensioner "fail safe" spring back to the base of the tensioner? I was under the impression that gap is to allow for some movement to occur before the damper bottoms out. If you walk the spring back, it might lock out the damper travel completely. I thought the tensioner would automatically set the proper amount of damper travel when you pull the pin and the plunger extends. Otherwise, there is absolutely no reason to have that notch cut out in the collar at the base of where the plunger extends from. I know some mechanics do walk the spring back but some mechanics just leave it as is. Is there any official VW literature that explains the proper placement of the spring?

Very helpful, although there are a few differences in the Tiguan engine bay. Lots of moving the engine up and down to get at the bolts, especially the Triple Squares, oh and when your strip out a stinking Torx screw. What is up with all the different types of bolt/screw heads in the same job? Next up it's, "Where the heck is that coolant leak?"

As Paul said, always check your timing prior to replacing the tensioner to see if your chain is stretched. My '12 GTI had the updated tensioner from the factory but started to stall due to chain stretch and the timing 093 measuring block being at +4.67. The stretch reached the point that the chain wasn't seated all the way on the sprocket of the variable intake cam and actually started to wear out the teeth on the sprocket itself. Though I didn't have to replace the top end due to a failed tensioner, I had to replace everything timing related (chain, guides, bridge) and the intake camshaft.

@tp7278
@tp7278 6 жыл бұрын
Like Ryan said, +4/-4 would be my guess because I was stalling out at light throttle below 30 mph at +4.67. Luckily the DSG is smart enough to automatically go into neutral when the engine stalls so you can keep coasting. This happened at 135k miles with 5k oil changes since new. Dealer told me it's common to the point they stock all the parts for the job. I'm currently at 146k miles and the car idles much smoother, with +1.01 measured.

A couple of tips: ~ I don't know why that one 16mm bolt (at 3:54) has a metal extension on it (theft protection?) but if you don't have a long 16mm socket (I didn't), you can use the long 5/8 inch socket that you use for taking out the spark plugs. ~ Make sure to use a short triple square socket bit set for removing the bracket (at 6:09) , as a regular XZN bit set won't fit . I recommend the OTC 5942 short socket XZN bit set. ~ If you remove the upper timing cover, make sure to reinstall it before you reinstall the bracket and engine mount. ~ In my experience, all of the big bolts are tighter and stuck on harder, than what is portrayed in this video. ~ When reinstalling the harmonic balancer bolt with the donut tool, don't tighten it too hard.

I love your videos, you are a great example of a modern dynamic company who cares for their customers. My one criticism about this video is that you really don't need to be so brutal getting the cover off, your hammering and prying is ruining the nice sealing surface, i found it easiest to start from the top of the cover where it meets the top timing cover, by slowly prying around the top and then squeezing a few painters wood stirrers (think popsicle stick) in and around I could get the cover off without any hammering and leaving the surfaces nice and tidy. It took me no longer than 5 minutes to get it off in a condition that it could easily be used again. Thanks again for your great videos though.

What is the trick to getting that last triple square bolt out? I removed the lower 2 and the access hole is way out of reach to get to that last bolt... I feel I could maybe rase the engine with the engine support bar but that seems super sketchy. Any help?

If you're talking about the bolt on the mount bracket, I used the triple square bolt bit that I bought at OReilly and cut it down so it would fit in between the bolt and frame and then used a 13mm wrench on the bit to loosen the last bolt.

@@512kjt Nope. The highest bolt. I ended up adjusting the engine height with my support bar, I squeezed a longer triple square through a few crevices and made it work.

I would say so. My tensioner failed on me, and as a result I had to buy a new engine from VW. Lesson learned.

Where can I get the donut tool you reference at about 10:20 to hold the lower timing chain gear in place?

They sell them on their website. Mine came with the cam lock kit that I bought.

Wow great video and walk through. Thank you for sharing. We're preparing to do the same upper tensioner replacement on a 2012 Tiguan. When looking at the number of plastic guides/rails, would it make sense to replace the chains, rails and lower tensioner at the same time?

You guys are absolute Gold with your videos. Yeah I know you don’t like me because I complained about the shitty mirror caps you sold me but you’ve made up for that by saving me thousands in VW dealership repair fees. Thanks guys!

It's worth mentioning here that social destroyer is talking about an FSI, engine, not a TSI. They have a timing belt in the front of the engine that drives the exhaust cam, and a small timing chain in the back of the engine that drives the intake cam from the exhaust cam.
