Nice job. Spraying the CPS and timing cover plug with brake cleaner or similar before removal can help avoid any debris from entering the engine.

Mine is at -1.38 intake and 0.75 exhaust is that bad or is it good? I measured it on OBDeleven with the live data option for camshaft intake and exhaust deviation

That’s ok, just means it’s moderate stretched, be ok a bit yet

He said the specifications from VW want it to be plus or minus 5 degrees from zero. So you are very much safe for now. If I were you I would keep my eye / ear on it. If you hear the rattle become worse or more prominent check it again to see if things are changing. Or just check periodically from here on out until it creeps closer to that 5 degrees

Hello, Sir. I have a question. The timing chain in my VW Fox 2006 car has stretched. Do you think it's okay to drive 10 miles a day, but only for short distances? Thank you very much in advance for your answer.
@BrenoAutoGarage
@BrenoAutoGarage 10 ай бұрын
I am not familiar with the Fox, so first research if your engine is interference or non-interference. Non-interference no big deal, even if the chain slips or breaks engine should be ok. If it’s interference then it depends on how stretched it is, and how much you want to gamble. If VW spec is +/-5° then I would not to push the engine hard above that. But some people get to 8-9° stretch without issue so you never know...

Any basic settings/adaptations that need to be reset via OBDeleven after replacing the timing chain? I have the older Android-based device and the newer NextGen on iOS. I was at -8.71 for “Camshaft adaptation intake bank 1, phase position” with a fully extended tensioner when I got the chain replaced. Post-replacement the OBDeleven Android device is reading -.92 for phase position, but the NextGen is giving a strange phase position value of 29.0°F. Not sure what to make of that, and whether the NextGen expects some kind of reset in order to get an accurate reading.

Wow, that is serious stretch! Was it rattling on cold startup, or running poorly? I am not sure what to make of 29°F, but I will post a pinned comment when I get around to replacing the chain and scan to see what the baseline value is. I do believe it is normal to be +/- 1° on a new chain, at least that is what others online have seen. I do not have any VWs myself, I got the scanner to check this value after my mom sent me the CEL code scanned at a parts store in her town. I wanted to make a video showing my experience, but I am by no expert. I wish there was a dongle scanner like OBD11 for all car brands, very powerful scan and customization options you usually need dealer software to do. Using a laptop with Techstream for my Toyotas gets annoying.

This was on a 2013 Audi B8 2.0 TFSI allroad. No rattle, no symptoms at all. Ran perfectly smooth at idle and under load. No DTCs. I inspected the tensioner and could see it was fully extended, so I had the chain replaced as “preventative maintenance” given the state of the tensioner + the phase position value. I’ve determined the OBDeleven device doesn’t always play nice with iOS, in my experience anyway, and the functionality is just better on Android. The iOS app was misreading the camshaft adjustment phase position ° as a temperature value instead of degrees of rotation, so when its Units setting is “metric” you get the correct reading, but if Units is set to “imperial” the app converts what it thinks is a Celsius value to Fahrenheit. The Android app recognizes it’s not a temperature value just because there’s a ° present, so metric/imperial settings don’t change the phase position value.

With high hopes, i got an OBD device to check the status of the timing chain on my VW Golf 2.0 TDi. When I went to live data, the OBD software GUI didn't allow me to enter any value for the live data channel. Instead a list of live parameters is only what I could access, of which "Camshaft adjustment adaptation" was not listed. Camshaft position start of phase window, Camshaft position end of phase window, Camshaft adaptation intake bank 1 phase position, Camshaft slope position were the only options I could see in the list. I tried the app on both android and iOS and the options are still the same. I am on the free version without any credits or upgrades. Can someone let know what am I missing here. 1:42 1:42 1:42
