This is one of those songs that make you think. It gives a joyous feeling, but an extreme sense of longing, and emptiness, I don't know how, but it does. It is something you'd listen to at 2 a.m., on a sleepless night, so you can just.... Think. This actually brought a tear to my eye, and I enjoyed it so much , thank you for this piece :)

@@ChrisHahn Yep, my other little brother is the one who showed me the video, a bunch of years back. He passed away in 2017 so its been hard to listen to a bunch of songs. But for some reason I came back to this one today and I didn't cry this time. Me and my brother just sat, listened, and remembered. Thank you for making this amazing track 🖤

So I watched this video about 6-8 weeks ago and was absolutely captivated by it. Once I saw what you were doing, it all made sense very quickly how I could manipulate samples to make music. A few days later someone listed a launchpad and XL control on facebook, and I bought them on impulse... next thing I know I'm learning ableton live and searching through old vinyls on youtube for samples, and now I've begun trying to put tracks and loops together... and it all started with this amazing video! Thanks for showing me the way forward!

That's awesome! I tell people that once you get your head around how the software works and how you can basically build your own instrument with MIDI controllers, you start listening to the world completely differently. I actively listen for sounds and loops in everyday life, and sometimes it's as easy as pulling out your phone and taking voicenotes of a sound. The building blocks are all around us, you just have to listen with your eyes wide open.

Thank you very much for your response. I have been playing around with ableton live demo for a while but just REALLY got into it and I am just going to stick to that because of its compatibility with other programs. Thank you very much and a MIDI keyboard truly does speed up the time you use thinking up ideas. Much easier to make light of them.

Thanks, Ryan. I did create the loops beforehand. That's part of my workflow. I almost never have the opportunity to just sit down and write a song, so alot of times i'll just work on beat loops, or melodic loops here and there. Then, when I have the chance to sit down and actually put something together, I have some jumping off points rather than a blank slate.
@shootdaj12 жыл бұрын
Nice, I'll have to try that. Last night I tried the Slice to new MIDI track approach and it worked pretty well too. I froze the MIDI track with the Electric loaded (with a 2 bar clip recorded - I shortened my original clip to 2 bars), then flattened it, creating an audio track. I then sliced the new audio clip by 1/4 bars into a new MIDI track, creating 8 slices. Then I created 8 clips with each one playing one piece and follow action to the next, which ended up working exactly like yours.

It would be worth considering. Like I mentioned to the poster above, having some kind of control surface isn't necessary for writing, but it makes it alot easier when you can quickly input notes, or do automation passes. If you want to get into performing your tracks with Ableton (which Ableton is really great at) then the LP is really great for that.

Part of it is how much you want to spend, and part of it is what is it you're wanting to do. The APC40 out of the box is an Ableton surface control, giving you knobs, sliders and a grid to replicate the Ableton interface. The Launchpad is a grid launcher too, with some mixer controls. The Push, while you can just launch things, it's aimed at writing music, with it's sequencer and scales tools built in.

The launchpad just lights up to follow the clips as they're firing in Ableton. If you're asking about how the loop is going, that's something in Ableton called Follow Actions which determine what happens when a clip when it finishes.

The Launchpad is a general MIDI device capable of sending and receiving note data, CC's, even keyboard presses, depending on how you configure it with Novation's Automap software. In that respect, the hardest part is figuring out how you want to use it. You can use it with any music software. That being said, it was made specifically with Ableton Live in mind, and supports Ableton's Native Mode which lets you control Ableton's clip launch grid as well as many of the mixer functions.
@ChrisHahn12 жыл бұрын
I start out by dropping clip into Arrangement view, and then manually slicing it up into subdivisions there, then selecting them all, click and drag, hit tab, then drop them in a track. All your splits will go to separate clips. After that you can make warp tweaks to the individual clips if you need to.

It depends on how long your loops are, and where the cuts are. Sometimes you need to experiment. You can lay out notes, but I prefer laying out samples in each cell, just because it's more predictable.

actually i did exactly that, copy the same clip 7 times and then move the note.. thanks for all your input, it has helped quite a lot.. this technique is up there with using "dummy clips" in that it's using ableton live in a way that was not specifically intended by the creators, but then again i guess innovation requires users to experiment.

oh snap. I just looked up his Improvised MIDI Guitar video. What the crap, that's awesome! I'm going to look up some of his tracks now. Thanks!
@ChrisHahn11 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah, out of the box it takes a bit of finessing, but you can do alot with it. That's what makes the Ableton Push's scale mode so interesting. Speaking of which, I believe that several people have come up with ways to adapt those 4th scales to the LP layout. No velocity, but still useful. I actually use a MIDI velocity scaler in Ableton, and map that to a knob so that you can play the LP a bit more expressively.
@ChrisHahn11 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Eric. I think the best way to start out is to figure out if you're just wanting to write, or to write and perform. I use Ableton Live for performing, but I still use some other tools like Reaper and Pro Tools for recording and editing. I would look into the 30 day trial of Ableton and just work it hard for those 30 days and see if it's your thing. Keep in mind, any MIDI controller you buy is an extension of the software. Sometimes just getting a $40 keyboard is all you need.
@JesseJaceThomas12 жыл бұрын
SOLID! I played with the Launchpad a couple times in retail stores and didn't care for it, but it's being put to good use here.
@ChrisHahn12 жыл бұрын
That being said, knowing that the LP is simply reflecting what's happening in the software, what's happening in Ableton is pretty much what you said - each sound is set to a cell in grid - just like the buttons on the LP - and pushing the buttons are triggering each sample in each cell, depending on how you've set up each cell. A cell can contain a one shot sample, a loop, part of a loop, a MIDI clip, etc.

@ChrisHahn12 жыл бұрын
You can still do plenty by having it set to 8ths, which is safer from a triggering standpoint. I have my clips set to auto trigger the next clip in a linear cascade at 8th intervals. after you start the clips looping, you're essentially beatcutting by interrupting the linear playback with non-linear trigger, and then resetting everything by going back to the beginning.

The LP is paired to Ableton Live, so what you're seeing on the left hand side is just replicating what's already happening in Ableton, it's just giving you a tactile way to control it, and with two way LED communication, you can see what's happening as well. You can map any MIDI controller to control Ableton, you just don't have LED feedback, and you have to go through the work of creating the mappings. The LP is set up so that it works automatically.
@ChrisHahn12 жыл бұрын
yup. Just a pretty common EP sound. You can add things like tremolo, and modify things like how hard the hammers hit the tines, and noise and things like that, but I don't really remember what they are now. I kind of like not knowing, so I don't use the same sound next time. Anyway, the delay and reverb are sends and they're on every channel, and not part of the original sound.
