They are probably used to music (I use the term in the loosest possible manner) that they can't actually HEAR, just feel the vibration through their body from the high volume and low frequency bass beat. First time I've seen a damper pedal on a hammered dulcimer. Nice! I have a beautiful one made for me by a man who had a company in Boone NC but I can't remember the name now because it's been well over 20 years ago, but it does not have the damper. I picked up the "hammers" having never played one and quickly learned Amazing Grace. When he saw this, He showed me his shop and showed me the different stages of construction. He realized I had an ear for music so he didn't tell me, but asked me to thump on the three resonant cavities inside. He somehow had them tuned to a major chord! We became instant friends. I bought the best one he had and have loved it, but now wish it had the dampers. You play well!

The first time I heard this instrument was from a street performer. I recorded it and I listened to it whenever I wanted a relaxing sound. It took me a while to find the name of the instrument to be able to listen to it again properly.
