Thanks Robert and Gunnlauger, for discussing this very important topic. I've been conscious about tyre wear pollution for many years, and for that reason I drive carefully too. That's not necessarily driving slowly, but rather not having a Lead right foot, anticipating road situations, and using brakes sensibly. One thing which you didn't mention is the scare tactic, used by car dealers, of pressuring people to change their tyres long before they really need changing. For instance, my Renault dealer started dropping hints when the tyres had less than 7,000 miles of use, and still had 68% of their tread remaining before they would become illegal. I'll go elsewhere for the next MOT test.

Brake pads last much longer on EVs.
@SigFigNewton2 ай бұрын
Yes. Bad stuff going into the air from the car rubbing itself while braking is worse in ICE cars than in EVs. Bad stuff going into the air from the car rubbing the road while braking or accelerating is worse in heavier vehicles (trucks are way worse than cars, an EV would be slightly worse than an ICE car of identical dimensions). All of this is small beans compared with the toxicity of ICE exhaust. The American Lung Association created a report estimating the immense health care savings from cities being populated by EVs rather than ICE cars.
@chrisp78392 ай бұрын
@@nicholasjackson2833 But regenerative braking will INCREASE wear on tyres, and release of that particulate matter so you can’t win. The least polluting drive style is cruising with no regen, and anticipating the road ahead
@Smidge2042 ай бұрын
@@chrisp7839 Regen breaking is a net reduction in particulate pollution. If you are using the friction brakes, then you have the dust emissions from both the brake pads and the tire. If you use regen braking, you have the dust emissions only from the tire. In both cases you still need to transmit the braking force "into the road" and that's done through the tire. However it goes one step further: using regen braking often means you are spreading that braking force over a longer distance because you are slowing down more gradually rather than braking with more force after coasting. That reduced braking force means less wear overall. You can "anticipate the road ahead" all you want but at the end of the day you will be slowing down or coming to a stop, and you'll emit less particulate pollution doing that with regen braking than with friction brakes.

Interesting that your guest stated tyres are a “distress purchase”, and that’s why the industry gets away with what they do. It occurred to me that is also true of a gas boiler - you ignore it until it goes wrong, and then you will just want it replacing, asap. You’re unlikely to go for a week’s disruption for a heat pump to be installed. That’s how they get away with it too !

Robert, your room is soundproofed very well, but the people you are speaking to- quite often speak from echoing rooms, to poor quality microphones. Can you at least ask them to choose less echoing room for the interview? Closed window curtains and some additional pillows around their room could help to reduce the echo even further.

Thank you for an interesting discussion. G spoke a lot about range efficiency and life span but didn't talk about traction. Grip as for cornering, grip for braking and acceleration. This is equally important to consider when choosing a make of tyre.
@glockmanish20 күн бұрын
In the tire recipe there are more expensive ingredients that improve grip while improving wear resistance, i.e. silica. That's why it is stupid to buy a cheap tire. You either have a dangerous car in very poor weather or you have to change the tire within half the mileage! Example: GoodYear Vector4Seasons lasts 30000km, Michelin CrossClimate2 lasts 60000km ... the latter one costing around 175€ for my EX30, the first one 145€ ... And both have excellent grip!

Hi Robert, I live next to the Freeway in Brisbane, and my house is constantly dusty with black soot from tyres. I have lived here for 25 yrs and now have a skin condition that is proving difficult to control. I'm moving to the Adelaide Hills to get away from the humidity and the dust..... It has always worried me that the tyre particles are not doing us any good? For me, the most important point that was made by Gunnlaugur was about how executives in industries think and work: their interest is in how the business can thrive rather than any other consequences of their activities. To them, it seems it doesn’t matter what the industry is; the key driver is shareholder value and their own bonuses. The CEO’s driver is more to do with how to run the business successfully than about producing optimal products. For the foreseeable future, we are stuck with this model of running businesses, therefore we need to find ways of working within this model in order to produce outcomes which are more beneficial to the wider population and the environment. Is breath-holding a sensible thing to do right now?
@Tomm9yАй бұрын
Product traceability technology is needed to support a circular tyre economy. I appreciate there is a need to deal with tyre pollution in cities. I live in a rural area with rough roads, I use winter tyres too. Solutions which include rural drivers are important. I agree with Robert that a 'Tyre' mode would be very helpful. The nearest option on my AWD car is a 'Winter' mode, which greatly reduces the risk of wheel spin on ice and snow, that is an extreme version, but it makes me think. Perhaps EV's should be fitted with less sporty tyres, surely on a lighter EV such a Tesla Model 3 a 195 width tyre should be used. This should be linked to the taxation levels, thereby encouraging vehicles to use the optimum size of tyre. I guess the car management system could be updated with the details of the tyres fitted, perhaps even chip or ID embeded in the tyre. I think this is very worthwhile as it is such an important issue. A more controlled supply chain would also help reduce illegal dumping of tyres. The increasing number of roundabouts is an issue for tyre wear in particular. Those who live in modern towns can encounter many roundabouts in one journey. Many towns have a series of roundabouts to form a bypass. In the last decade, new housing developments have been allowed to access busy A and B roads by installing roundabouts, this should never have been permitted, instead housing should be connected to towns and villages via local roads first, not disrupting important routes. This is all the more reason for transport and development to be better planned. If the government bought up agricultural land at agricultural prices, then built the infrastructure, we could get housing at cost, free of the developer/landbankers mega profits, and more suitable roads and infrastructure.

But then again: compared to what? Tire tests of all-season tires in Germany showed than GoodYear 4Seasons tires last 30000km, Michelin CrossClimate2 last 60000km. So even by choosing a good tire from the classic manufacturers you can DOUBLE the tire life. What was written yesterday is outdated today.

The title of this episode sums things up nicely. The industry often needs an upstart to show that things can be done differently and once that has been shown, the legacy makers have little choice but to do likewise. Well done Enso, looking forward to being able to fit your tyres to my EV. Your hilarious story of the diesel car owner who thought he'd found a flaw in the EV argument is also a nice sum up. So often the arguments against EVs are like this, with the arguer not realising that their cars do that damage too and then a lot more besides! We are moving towards sustainability though, and the EV is playing a huge role in that.

I would have liked to know to what degree tire construction and composition can influence tyre wear and even counter the vehicle weight increase? I mean ... tires are wearing over about the same mileage, whether it is a 1 tonne tiny car or 2 tonne SUV. Is this all about the amount of "meat" on the tire? but that cannot be, as small cars have maybe 165 wide tires, where 2T cars usually have 235 or 255 wide tires ... so there seems to no doubling in tread volume. And is the relationship between vehicle weight and wear linear or does the wear increase more than the vehicle weight?

Maybe it's not the kind of value you were looking for but that's definitely *a* value, and it's what they are offering to stand out from the competition. Description of the product? It's a tire. Surely you know what a tire is. The only thing lacking is a more depth on how they achieve the reduced wear, which because I know at least SOMETHING about tires I'd guess involves a harder tread compound with more fillers like silica that resist turning to dust. A harder compound would also explain the claims of increased EV range. That's only an educated guess though, and they would be far from the first to sell harder tires for EVs.

I'm slightly concerned that despite the length of this video there was little solid information about the aspects of Enso tyres which are different to other tyres, or the measured performance of their tyres. I have also looked at Ensos website and that is similarly thin on detail. I'm thinking that their tyres are made in the same way with broadly the same materials as other tyres but simply with a shift of emphasis to the wear characteristics when balancing the factors of grip/noise/wear/rolling resistance. As referenced in the podcast this is similar to the incandescent lightbulb manufacturers who were capable of making lightbulbs that would pretty much last forever but decided not to do this because they wouldn't be able to sell as many bulbs! (There were drawbacks to the ever-lasting lightbulb in that it wouldn't be as energy efficient so they did have a legitimate argument to veer away from that product.) Unless tyre manufacturers have been colluding to sell us fast wearing tyres then I would guess there is going to be some trade-off from other aspects of performance when wear is improved ... but since no evidence was presented all we can do is speculate. The idea of renting out the tyres is an interesting model in terms of creating a pressure on manufacturers to err on the side of long life.

I normally have to change tires due to age not wear. My 10 year old BEV has to have new tires due to age not wear. I could most likely get two more years out of the original tires before reaching the wear bars.

Can you buy these tyres outside of the UK? 🇦🇺

Why not turn the Top layer of those tires into an affordable material for soling and heeling material for the Shoe Repair industry? It would just make sense.

Thinking about the question, Where does all the Tyre wear go, When it rains it washes down the drains, ( If your tyres loose 7mm of tread all round in its life where does it go) Billions of tyres x 7mm adding to blocking the drains and causing the streets to flood, All the problems we have today is caused by making fast progress with industry without thinking about the possibility of what can go wrong, Example It's only now we are understanding that Social media is too easy to access and is damaging our children mentally, Think about also the potential for damages to necks that will become a serious problem medically in the future, You buy a phone but you don't get training on how to hold it, I know your probably thinking why is this guy talking about mobile phones but you have to have a clear understanding of what I'm saying, Failure is a buy product of development without forward thinking, Thanks for the video, Very interesting.

Okay great - can you make some 215/55 R17 please Ideally I want A class wet grip, A class rolling resistance and a sub 70dB noise rating.

Sadly, ENSO's Crowdcube fundraising is already oversubscribed and therefore closed.

I wonder how long it'll be before we see Teslas equipped with Tesla tyres...

Another subtlety of tires, that is a very annoying thing - is tire size stagger. Having wider rear tires means that you cannot rotate the tires! *What* are they doing?!

EV's save on the asbestos brake dust pollution Vs. ICE vehicles.

Don't you test tires in the UK? If you do, how is the results of energy saving, grip, noise etc., compared to other tires on the exactly same type of car? Don't think you focus on this in the program. What about high speed, weight of the car, wet road behavior, braking results, etc.? And how much less does these ENSO tires pollute? Less, because they last longer? Only? What is different in the chemistry of the rubber? How is it easier to recycle the ENSO-tires? Isn't there any steel-band inside the rubber? These are questions I would have liked to get information about. This episode were almost only all about marketing philosophy....right?

Talking about tire particulates, it's not great but blaming EVs for it is bunker. People should also ask where the roughly 2400 pounds of gasoline are gone after 12,000 miles driving in a year or 24,000 pounds of it after 10 years

Can you do an episode on EV repair especially as they age or in my case the manufacturer has discontinued the line that the driver owns. Considering how long they last. Mine has so much life and is in amazing pristine shape …however repair personnel and know how is not there. It’s not where I live nor is it nearby.

I buy tyres based on grip performance. I like the idea of ENSO tyres but generally the tyres that last the longest, also have the worst grip performance. Softer compounds usually grip better but wear faster don't they? Maybe ENSO have discovered the holy grail of high performance and long life but I'd have to see some independent reviews.

Autonomy should reduce tyre wear by driving more smoothely. The cybercab design is already cheaper because it won't need to handle human driving.

Time for me to get an electric para motor. May I respectfully request a video on how long the Parachute for a para motor lasts? Thank you.
