Epic now you have me thinking I should do the same now.. Mine would have a tad bit more weight up front with the Winch setup....
@EpicCowlick7 жыл бұрын
I think these trucks do well with weight on them. and a 2 or 2.5 level is perfect. 2 gives you just a little more room to sag the back. And this time I'm not messing around. Better shocks and 3.0 on the front caster. I couldn't believe that one of the front shocks is already weak and one of the backs is leaking oil. Those factory shocks just can't handle the bigger tires.

Mr. Epic, long time no see and hear from you. Hope all is well. Did your super duty came with a "camper package" from the factory? @EpicCowlick7 жыл бұрын
It's waaaaaay better than the 2011. The new fully boxed frame results in a very planted, stable ride. These 37 inch Toyos do rub on the control arm and the driver side sway bar. Not bad, but it does. 35's are fitting OEM wheels now without any rubbing. Fox shocks are next for me.

A while back you mentioned adjusting the caster angle after installing the 2.5": ready lift back to 3.5 to 4.0. Is this taken care of by installing the track bar relocation bracket or is the caster adjustment a totally separate issue? Great stance on that truck!
@EpicCowlick7 жыл бұрын
They are different issues all together. Leveling/lifting rotates the steering knuckle forward which has the effect of nearly zero'ing out the caster angle. Steering will feel loose and floaty and will wander in the lane on the highway. Restoring caster and adding some extra to compensate for larger tires.

Truck looks great! Question...Assuming you got the updated version of the readylift kit that comes with sway bar drop and track bar relocation brackets, are you having any issue with caster? And also dropping the sway bar/track bar did the pitman arm have any issue with a strained ball joint?
@EpicCowlick7 жыл бұрын
Yes, that kit had all those components. I noticed the need for correcting the caster angle right away and had it done. Ended up with 3.6 and 3.9 caster which completely restored the tight steering feel. Truck tracks straight and firm. No issues with pitman arm. There should be no change to ball joint angle with the steering arm bracket extension.
@EpicCowlick7 жыл бұрын
The dealer is right. The OEM bushing is not adjustable. It's an easy replacement for a GOOD alignment shop. Here's the bushing I used. amzn.to/2xwodmi Ask your alignment guys to set in between a range of 3.6 - 3.9 degrees and you'll be golden. It will restore the firm steering and get rid of the light, floaty feeling after leveling. I also put a link to the bushing in the video description if this one doesn't work.

Truck looks good, the wheel wheel measurement that most people go by is not always the most accurate as the sheet metal and wheel wells can be differant front to back a lot of the time the rear wheel wells are higher, thats whey you see so many leveled trucks that look nose high. That said your truck looks perfect.
@EpicCowlick7 жыл бұрын
I agree. Even a little slope and change the fender height front to rear. The measurement on this video is the closest I've taken. Other times it is a full half inch difference back to front.

The leveling kit does not cause any rubbing but the 37 inch tires do. They contact the control arms and sway bars at full lock only. Something you can get used to and adjust for. 35 inch tires on OEM wheels clear everything fully.

I installed a Ready Lift 2.5 leveling kit into my 2018 Ford F250. Basic kit with the trac bar bracket and stock shocks with spacer. At highway speeds, if i hit a bump the truck is throws me all over the place. Seems unsafe. Do you think the Caster Bushings make a difference?
@EpicCowlick6 жыл бұрын
Derek Pevey You definitely need to restore the caster angle on the front steering. Going up 2.5 inches almost zeros the angle and turns your steering to something like a shopping cart. Exactly. You don't have to run straight down or have the truck towed or anything. Just pay attention after the level and you'll notice how floaty, wandery the steering feels after the level. By restoring the caster angle on the steering knuckles the steering will be firm and the truck will track straight.

@EpicCowlick7 жыл бұрын
37/12.50/20. The tires are load range E with 65 psi max and I run them around town at about 53 psi. It's a very nice ride. But they are 69 lbs each vs about 43 for the OEM Michellins so it creates some jittery-ness which will be corrected with better shocks and an improved stabilizer.

Could you tell me what the difference in size is from a 37" tire from stock? I ask because I am very tight for garage door height? also it looks like the caster bushing doesn't work with a 18 do you know why it wouldn't? thanks so much
@EpicCowlick7 жыл бұрын
Use a tire size converter to determine actual tire diameter. A 37" tire is about 2.5 inches larger than some stock tires but stock can be different depending on how the truck is equipped. Go to tiresize.com/converter to measure any size tire. The 17-18 caster bushing hole size is larger than the previous model years.

It's a really high quality cover and I like it. Opening and closing is surprisingly easy even though the bed rails are so high. And yes, the lock engages both sides of the bed. This way the pin goes up into the rail instead of just pinching onto it. Very strong.

Awesome looking truck and love following the build. The new air bags look like a great setup too. Question though, how big of a spare can you fit under the truck? Are you just planning not to have a flat with those beefy tires or can a 37 actually fit under the bed?
@EpicCowlick7 жыл бұрын
Those are great questions and sometimes keep me up at night. lol. I just have the factory 34.5 inch spare under there and I've always wondered how big a tire would fit. Haven't measured so I don't know but I would rather have a worn 37 inch spare if it would fit. The reason I haven't made it a priority is I can't remember the last time I had a flat. Literally 20 years ago so any preparations I've made over the years produced no benefit. But that still leaves the question of what would I do in case? The spare is really just a donut compared to the rest of the tires. As I understand it I can put the spare on the back because it's an open differential and keep speed down and no damage would occur. What to do? Best option is to not get a flat! I am planning to put the best of the four tires on the spare when I need new ones. Assuming it fits of course.

@@robertsifuentessquad4074 Ride is great. Make sure they do the full level including the trac bar relocation bracket and new caster bushings for the alignment. Does doing a leveling kit like this and tires like this void warranty?
@EpicCowlick6 жыл бұрын
Nope. There's no such thing as "voiding the warranty" because of a modification. Maybe if a wheel bearing fails prematurely or something that could be tied to the level and tires but not the whole warranty. Dealers make these mods all the time and Ford honors the vehicle warranty unless the modification caused the failure.

@EpicCowlick6 жыл бұрын
The ride is much improved with the Fox shocks. That is expected. There is no difference between 35 and 37 inch tires. Tire pressure makes a huge difference and I run 65 psi when towing but 50 psi around town. Don't forget the caster bushings or the steering will feel loose and wobbly.
@atlasraptor93226 жыл бұрын
EpicCowlick thank you when you get a chance caster bearing you talk about I’m little confused. Can you explain more or do you have a video out on this?
@EpicCowlick6 жыл бұрын
It's not a bearing, it's a bushing. Any change to the steering components will have an effect somewhere. The caster angle must be precisely positioned so the steering wheel remains firm and stable and doesn't wobble back and forth. By raising the front end the truck, the steering geometry (which was highly tuned by Ford engineers to work the best in all situations) is now changed. The factory castor bushing needs to be changed to one with increased angle to restore the steering knuckle to it's factory position. Search "caster angle explained" on KZbin and you'll find plenty of explanations of how it works.

Your 2.5" lift looks really nice! I had a 4" Carli Dominator installed on my '17 King Ranch and I hate the amount of space between tire and fender. I've got 37" Toyo MT's. You probably don't off-road your 350...I was worried 37's would rub or bottom out in the fender well. Have you had any problems?
@EpicCowlick7 жыл бұрын
I actually do get it off road, not super hard core and never fast but it goes through sand washes and over some trails in Moab, Utah. The fact is the 37 inch tires on OEM wheels are going to rub at times. They just will and the more crazy the road, the more likely they will. But even there it's just not enough to bother me. They never rub fenders, only the control arm and the sway bar and only at full lock.
@zfilmmaker7 жыл бұрын
My kit came with a sway bar drop mount to get it out of the way. Its a kit with a lot of parts, but Carli doesn't advertise it as a lift kit since its a leaf lift. They refer to it as a suspension replacement. It handles far better then factory, but I'm not sure it was worth 12k installed. I wanted King 3.0 shocks and Carli is one of few to use them. That said I like the look of your lift more and I'm sure you saved a ton of money installing yourself. Was this the first time you did one?
@EpicCowlick7 жыл бұрын
That Carli is about as nice as they get but $12K? That seems like a lot but you should have the best riding SD around. I did a 2 inch level on my previous 2011 but it was about as simple as it gets. Spring spacer only. This kit had all the components in the video description but was only $450. I did spend another $200 getting the alignment and caster angle correct. Last step is to put on shocks and I've looked at Kings also. To get the adjustable IBS versions and have them valved right it's about $2,200. One of the things that prevents most people from doing these levels is one nut underneath that requires 406 lb ft or torque. Few people have tools for that. I have a 5 to 1 torque multiplier so I could do it myself. Worked great.
@zfilmmaker7 жыл бұрын
I looked at my receipt and 12k includes 5 Toyo MT's, Afe air intake and a few other parts. I love everything about the Carli, I just don't like all the extra space between tire and fender. I suppose I could go to 40's but that's too big a tire. I'm going to see if I can trade down to the 2.5. I saw a Magnetic Platinum like yours yesterday with grey accented XD Grenade wheels, and it looked amazing. When I bought my truck I didn't like the grey, and opted for Caribou. Now I love Magnetic LOL.

Thanks, it's working great. The spacers were a fun exercise but they are not a long term solution. Really hard to center the wheel on so little hub makes tire rotations a guessing game. The tires rub the same but I've gotten used to it. It's only at full lock and it's easy to stop right before tires contact. Small issue but this is why people buy custom wheels with custom offsets. The level doesn't help the rub, it's the tire contact with the control arm and front sway bar on driver side.

Is the trac bar relocation bracket really necessary? I was told that it wasn't and that if I drop the trac bar I have to drop the pitman arm too because if not I'll get bump steer
@EpicCowlick7 жыл бұрын
I went through all that on my 2011. Put on a simple 2" coil spring spacer but chased steering wobble most of the time I owned it. I now believe the suspension should be as close as possible to the OEM geometry after a lift/level. I'm also a huge fan of changing the caster bushings and now think they are the biggest contributor to better steering feel. Caster angle on these trucks should be between 3.6 and 3.9 degrees to eliminate bump steer. No need to change the pitman arm after the trac bar relocation bracket.

will that 37 fit were the spare tire goes?
@EpicCowlick7 жыл бұрын
seth perry I haven't tried but kind of doubt it. There's plenty of room for the factory tire and maybe even a 35. But 37? That's a big tire.

What is the track bar relocation kit for? Did your kit come with it?
@EpicCowlick7 жыл бұрын
The track bar end is one of the hard location points on the frame. When you raise the front of the truck the axle shifts to the driver side unless you also adjust the track bar mounting point back to it's original orientation. Basically since I lifted the front 2.5 inches, the track bar mounting point needs to be lowered 2.5 inches. Keeps all the suspension geometry the way the Ford engineers intended.
@bigsterms7 жыл бұрын
EpicCowlick thank you for the help! I'll make sure I get the kit with that part then. Good job on your lift
@tonyrivera32856 жыл бұрын
Are the caster/ camber bushings necessary?
@EpicCowlick6 жыл бұрын
Yes, yes, aaaaannnd... yes. Raising 2.5 inches effectively zeros the factory castor angle and turns your steering into something like a shopping cart. Slight exaggeration but you get the point. Just do it and you'll thank me later.

Dose doing this affect towing capabilities?
@EpicCowlick7 жыл бұрын
The leveling kit has no affect on towing since it is on the front axle only. The only thing is when you put a load on the truck, the back end will sag but the front end will remain at the new height. This gives the truck a nose-high look and points the headlights higher and into oncoming traffic. In such case, airbags can re-level the truck. Headlights may need to be pointed more downward also. Putting on larger diameter tires does effect towing. It's like using a higher gear and when towing can cause more downshifts to maintain speed. Having said that, I pull a heavy 5th wheel and where I drive the same route on Hwy 6 in Utah. Even with the larger tires, this 2017 pulls the same road and load at a higher speed without shifting. The increased power of the new engine offsets the bigger tires.

Would installing it void warranty since it wasn't done at a dealer?
@EpicCowlick7 жыл бұрын
If the lift causes something to break, then no, the warranty wouldn't cover that kind of repair. But if something unrelated breaks, the warranty is still good.
@nahteconnor7 жыл бұрын
ok that makes sense. How does the truck ride? i have a 2.5" puck lift on my 2011 it stole all the ride comfort. I have been looking into doing a ready lift.
@EpicCowlick7 жыл бұрын
You need a quality lift/level if you want to keep the factory soft ride. Sadly they are much more expensive but there are several parts that need updates if you lift a truck.

ReadyLift has a trac bar relocation bracket which does the trick. Just google readylift trac bar bracket and you'll see many providers. It's about $200.

Does it ride the same after the leveling kit

With the kit, shocks and caster bushings, the ride is as good or better than factory.

Did the level fix the rubbing while turning?
@EpicCowlick7 жыл бұрын
Nope. The level does nothing for the rubbing because the contact is on the suspension components which are not lifted. The level does protect the fender in some extreme case of wheel compression. Those 37's are big but the space for them is even bigger.
@kwjacobler7 жыл бұрын
EpicCowlick ok, I have the readylift coil level kit on my 17 f250. I too will keep the 20" platinum wheels but just thought that the 35" tires would look too small. But I guess to avoid the rubbing, 35s it is.
@EpicCowlick7 жыл бұрын
kwjacobler Aren't coil overs designed to bear the weight of the vehicle? I don't know exactly how they work but I don't see how the shock mounts on the truck can bear that load. That's what the coil seat and top bracket do. Are the coil overs supposed to supplement the factory spring or replace it? I would be concerned that the ride would be too stiff.
@kwjacobler7 жыл бұрын
EpicCowlick I didn't have coilovers installed. Those are coils over the shocks. I replaced the factory coils with the readylift coils which are 2.5" longer. Also replaced the shocks to compensate the higher front end. Coilovers are used primarily on light duty pickups and cars. Coils and coilovers are essentially different parts.
@kwjacobler7 жыл бұрын
If you look on the readylift website, you'll see the leveling spacers (what you used) and the coil replacement leveling system. It's substantially more in price but it does ride better than factory with the added look of being leveled.

what kind of mileage are you getting and how did you correct your speedo?
@EpicCowlick7 жыл бұрын
18 on highway, 14-15 around town, 10 towing. 37/12.50 tires (big, wide, heavy) and 4,500 foot elevation. My speedo is off by 3-4% as compared to GPS speed. I got the largest factory tires available and have no other options to set them to so it will stay the way it is.
@anthony994087 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply! I've been following your videos for a few years now and recently joined Ford-Truck.com. where did you order your trac bar extension bracket, sway bar extensions and bump stop extensions from?
@EpicCowlick7 жыл бұрын
I got the full 2.5 kit from Rocky Mountain Suspension which included all those parts plus some. It was the kit for years 2011 - 2016 so there was one part that didn't apply to the 2017.
@anthony994087 жыл бұрын
Thanks i appreciate all if the information. Do you think you will do the rubber door seal trick in your new truck like you did your last one?
@EpicCowlick7 жыл бұрын
It hasn't needed the door seal mod yet. I think the lighter aluminum doors shut and seal better from the factory. Never say never though. If I do it will probably be with 5/16th inch tubing instead of the larger 3/8th inch tubing.
EpicCowlick do you have any issues with the truck sitting with a reverse rake(front higher than rear) when hooked up to a significant load?

Oh they rub at full lock. On the control arm and the sway bar. You either get used to it and back the steering wheel off a degree or two or get custom wheels. No way around it with OEM wheels.

@EpicCowlick6 жыл бұрын
After the level the truck needs a castor adjustment or the steering can feel loose and floaty. Otherwise it's like factory.

Thanks for the video Eric, I hope you don't mind a few more questions? 1.) Do you see much of an advantage with installing the Readylift 2.5 coil spring kit with shocks and all other features, ie Trac bar and castor? Also do you have an opinion of the applicability of the 3.5 Readylift kit in terms of ride and steering assuming all of the same installation requirements are meet? I understand the differences in rake with the 3.5 kit but was looking for more fender clearance with 37's and huge a$$ Mudd flaps and snow accumulation in Michigan. Thanks in advance for your time!
@EpicCowlick7 жыл бұрын
I've heard the coil spring kit provides a softer ride but I can't confirm as I have no experience with it. Fox shocks go a long way to improving the ride. The kit I installed included a trac bar repositioning bracket which re-centers the axle. It also had bump stop extensions and sway bar extensions and a couple of other things. It did not come with new caster bushings but they are definitely needed to restore the firm factory steering. Without them the steering is loose and floaty. I put a link to the adjustable bushings in the video description. Whatever you choose, 2.5 or 3.5, the truck will look awesome. The 2.5 lets you keep the rear end factory and still fit in some car washes and underground parking lots. Go up another inch and those options decrease rapidly.

On a side note, any problems with the Toyos on the stock rims? I thought those rims were 8 inchs wide and Toyo recommended 8.5, (10), 11.0 for your tire.

starwarsfanforlife I haven't done it yet but plan to do it from a distance.
