Great video, thanks for taking the time and effort to put it out. I have a 2017 F-350 and added the exact AirLift set up. Ordered it on line and was going to have a local shop put it on after crawling around under the truck and not seeing a good location to install it. After I watched your video I installed it myself. Again thanks! By the way, Semper Fi

Remember that the 350 Ford didn't add a frame plate behind the cab like on the 450 so its a little week spot most guys are adding bags to handle more weight

It's a great system. You'll enjoy it. The little compressor will run forever if it's kept dry. Still, you might want to keep a couple of Schrader valves in the truck to splice into the airbag lines in case of failure.

I did this same thing to my F450 Dully a few weeks back. It's the same kit that you have and it was a very clean step by step install. I am really impressed where you put the compressor. I have installed several of these kits on previous trucks and I have always mounted mine right below the driver door on the frame rail.

There is a TON of space up under there. I'm sure your normal spot is fine but it's kind of nice to almost never hear the compressor running because it's so far away. It's also comforting to know it's well protected from the elements.

Thanks for kool videos. always good to have someone break trail so to speak. I just also finished install of 5000 plus bags in my new 2017 f250 6.7. Piece of cake easy. One thing I did was while bags were assembled on thebench I fully compressed each bag then wrapped with a couple heavy duty tie wraps to keep compressed during install. Then cut off. Now comes 72000 install. I only haul a new Palomino SS550 truck camper at 1450 lbs to/from Alaska. I'd like to install a new 50 fuel tank but alas I'm truely humbled after watching you do it. Thanks for this video. Just completed the install on my 2017 F350 SRW. My last pickup was a 2002 F350 and I can't believe how TALL the new one is comparatively. In order to get level with my 2003 5th wheel I had to move the leaf springs on the trailer on top of the axle, which got me about 5". Still couldn't get the truck under the trailer when level. So, I had to take out the 3.25" factory spring block and replace it with a 1.5" spring block. Now I sit close to level when unloaded and level with the 5th wheel attached. And, I have 6" clearance to the bed rails. I added these same Air Lift setup, had to do some slight modifications to make them fit with the new spring blocks, but made it work. Now when I tow real heavy I can keep it level.

Way to go, that was no small project. You modified your trailer and the airbag mount points. It will be awesome from here on out. My trailer's axles were already flipped when I got it so that was nice. I was worried that the truck would be too high also but it turned out great.

Thanks for the video. This was super helpful for my 17’ F-250. I watched this video and the video we’re the air compressor went bad. I decided to installed mine in the cab behind the rear seat. I ordered the wireless Airlift compressor with the frame mount bracket. I removed the stock jack and it’s bracket. Using the stock jack stand bracket, I drilled holes into the bottom of the air compressor frame mount to match the jack stand bracket holes. I used the stock bolts and installed the air compressor frame bracket where the jack stand was. I then bolted the jack stand bracket to the top of the air compressor frame mount bracket. Just need to run the electrical and air lines. I hope the air compressor will last forever.

Sounds like a great plan. Inside the cab is a bit noisy but it sure is dry. No worries about losing a compressor due to water. The only thing you'll have to maintain is the compressor filter which can fill up with lint and dust.

Nicely done video, precisely what I want to do to my F250. I have the current airbags, but I do not have the compressor set up, and it gets pretty tedious to go out manually to check the airbag pressure constantly. So having a compressor on board is only the best logical decision I can make. Your video made it easier for me and gave me the confidence to go ahead and try this on my own; I appreciate it, Semper Fi!

Another great video and perfect neat, installation. Thanks. So far the lower Torklifts are great for our camper but I need the Hellwig Bigwig which arrives tomorrow to help with side wind loading. Building brackets today for Viair compressor and tank. Due to winter salt I plan to stack them in the corner of the box (passenger side) with a sheet metal cover for appearance. No interference with camper and out of the weather. Horns will still go underneath. I am finding space for this equipment underneath but not without extensive mounting brackets or mounting surfaces without drilling the frame, something I avoid whenever possible for accessories. I look forward to your solutions. Thanks for your efforts to educate us all.

Yeah, I have a heavy optioned Chevy 2500HD (with all the extra tow options), but with my heavy 40-ft fifth wheel, I had a LOT of fifth wheel down weight that gave me a lot of rear-sag that I couldn't get away from...so I added the Airlift 5000 kit (with the single-line manual gauge) and simply 'T'd' the air line across the axle...worked out perfect! DEFINITELY killed the sag, leveled me out...best $400 I could have invested on it!
@EpicCowlick
@EpicCowlick 5 жыл бұрын
The airbags can lift a lot of weight. I'm curious about the T setup with yours. I've heard that can allow airbags to push air from one side to the other and exaggerate a lean. Have you had any such problems?

Hey I have to ask ya how you find the truck tows with the level and 37s? I have 3 6.7 PS that’s I tow a lot with. I am trading in my 17 for a 2020 and am wanting to either do a level or 4 inch lift with 37s and I run airbags on everything. Look forward to your response.
@EpicCowlick
@EpicCowlick 4 жыл бұрын
This setup tows very well. Engine is strong enough to tow heavy with the 37 inch tires. The 2020 will be even stronger. The only concern is the bed height if towing a 5th wheel. My trailer's axles are flipped giving me 4 inches of height. It clears the bed rails great but would not if the trailer was at factory height. Tag trailers don't care and only need a good drop hitch. Goosenecks have plenty of clearance. Airbags are a must for stability and level towing in my opinion.
@workplaytv
@workplaytv 4 жыл бұрын

Epic, always enjoy your videos, thanks for sharing. Off topic here, but please share with me what fifth wheel hitch you went with in the new truck. Did you you go with a different hitch from the one you used in your 2011 SD? I recently went from the 2011 SD to 2017 F250 4x4 Lariat . . . love the truck! With the short bed, clearance between the rig and cab is very important. Thanks in advance.

Great videos all around! One thing though, would you not want to isolate the DIY compressor bracket from the truck's frame, seeing as one is raw aluminium and the other is steel?
@EpicCowlick
@EpicCowlick 6 жыл бұрын
I've made these types of brackets my entire life without even knowing about galvanic corrosion. Funny how I have always chosen aluminum because it doesn't "rust". lol. My take on that issue is that if the dissimilar metals have either an electrical current running through them or if the vehicle is in a humid or otherwise corrosive environment then yes, you should deal with it with proper fasteners. In my case, I have neither so I get a pass.

@EpicCowlick 4 жыл бұрын
Great question. The airbags have been awesome and I'm really glad for this model which has the bump stops inside. My little compressor failed this summer and I lost all air while pulling that big trailer. I was glad for the bump stops but I definitely wasn't level anymore. Found a solution that gets rid of the air bag compressor. Check my channel for the latest updates on an onboard air system and integrating that with the Airlift wireless controls.

Couple of questions as I am installing this week - how did you raise and support your truck to lower the axle and how does your remote work with the manifold so far back as I had trouble with my remote connecting on this same this setup on my 2012 F250 with manifold mounted under rear drivers side door. Great write up - thanks!
@EpicCowlick
@EpicCowlick 7 жыл бұрын
I just put a jack under the rear hitch and lifted the rear of the truck a few inches. Jack stands under the frame once it was up higher. At first I did have trouble with using the remote in the cab. I had to hold it as if reaching into the back seats to change pressure. It works fine now from anywhere in the cab now so not sure why it struggled at first. I don't use it much in the cab anyway. I only change pressure when the trailer is attached and I use it as part of raising and lowering landing legs on the 5th wheel. I inflate to 85 psi after I connect and start retracting the legs and then drop to 5 psi when I start lowering the legs. Speeds the process up. I've learned to never leave the remote on the truck bed sides. I've almost driven away like that a couple of times so it's always in my hand or pocket or center console. No exceptions. lol.

@gregparrott
@gregparrott 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your perspective. I've had both and felt the Firestone's were more robust, especially in their mounting brackets
@EpicCowlick
@EpicCowlick 7 жыл бұрын
That is interesting. I've installed both and felt like the AL bags are more substantial, thicker. And the main base bracket is larger and sits directly on the jounce bumper instead vertical extensions of Firestone's lower axle tube brackets. But at the end of the day, it's all just engineering. Clearly there is more than one way to skin a cat, so to speak. The Firestones proved themselves on my previous truck and these Air Lifts are new to me but have a great reputation. Time will tell.
@gregparrott
@gregparrott 7 жыл бұрын
My experience goes back about 8 years ago on a '97 Chevy. Perhaps the design quality of bracketry between the two manufacturers varies (i.e. is model specific) or Air Lift has just improved relative to Firestone. I must admit, I like Air Lift's incorporation of a bump stop integral to the bag. One manufacturer whose bracketry was REALLY poor was 'Hellwig'.

Double check the hardware you have to hold your module on, I think you said aluminum bracket, if you’re using steel bolts you’re going to get galvanic corrosion and it will erode the surrounding metal.
@EpicCowlick
@EpicCowlick 6 жыл бұрын
Funny how I've used aluminum for this type of application my entire life and never even noticed any corrosion. When Ford published the aluminum fastener document it went a long way to educating the masses. I think the reasons I've never had problems is partly due to a couple of things. There is no electrical current running through the brackets I've made and I live in a high mountain desert with low humidity. That and I've never kept a vehicle long enough to see failures. Time will tell.

Nice install. I have the same truck and am looking at the same Airlift setup (5000 Ultimate + 72000 wireless compressor). Did you notice any deterioration in ride quality after installing the airbags? And does the airbag setup make a difference in how the truck handles when pulling your trailer? I have a 9,000lb travel trailer and while I haven't noticed any problems when towing, I've been told that the front end will be a bit more stable if I have an airbag system to eliminate squat. Just curious if that's been true in your experience.
@EpicCowlick
@EpicCowlick 6 жыл бұрын
When the airbags are deflated (5 psi) you really can't tell they are back there. I put a camera under the truck once and ran over some rail road tracks and the bags compress as far as they can go. It's all factory suspension when they are deflated. As to the handling, I think they stabilize the truck a lot. The rear end can get bouncy if there is not a lot of air in them and really stiffens up when up to pressure. Everything is just positive except sometimes I have to reach the wireless remote into the back seat to change pressure. It must be at the edge of the range with the receiver in the far back under the bed.

Absolutely no regrets. The best reason for using the upfitters is the ability to turn it on or off so easily. I've seen some guys wire them to hot circuits or 'always on' but that seems to be begging for a dead battery.

Did you jack the rear end up and put the frame on jackstands to lower the axle or were you able to install the bags with the truck just sitting at right height? I just got the same kit and was wondering if I needed bigger jack stands or not...
@EpicCowlick
@EpicCowlick 6 жыл бұрын
I put a jack under the rear hitch and lifted the back end up a few inches. Then a single jack stand under the receiver. If your jack stand isn't tall enough, you can stack some lumber to get it high enough to hold the back of the truck up. There's not much risk of injury because if everything were to fail it would just come down to ride height. No biggie.

Can these be installed while the truck is on the ground? I had a set for a '13 F250, but when the instructions told me I had to suspend the rear axle via placing the frame rails on jack stands, I just brought it to a shop. Now I have a '17, and I'm wondering could I have done it without the axle suspended? It looks like you just had the axle lifted to allow ease of access during installation. Can you confirm this. I don't have any experience with the Smart Air product. I put the 72000 on my previous truck as well as this one. I will say that Air Lift improved the design of the 72000 by adding the air filter/water separator on the current generation. Six years ago the filter wasn't there and the manifold failed due to moisture. It's always good to see a product improve over the years.

Do you have any problems with the bags when it comes to getting your tires rotated or having your truck lifted for oil changes? Just wondering if there is anything you have to do to keep them from stretching too far, possibly damaging the bags.
@EpicCowlick
@EpicCowlick 5 жыл бұрын
It's an interesting question but nothing to worry about in normal use. Think of crossing a ditch on an angle off road. The rear axle will travel past the unloaded range and the bags are designed to accommodate that. Having said that, if you go crazy during offroading, suspension limiting straps can be used to make sure the axles don't go too far.

With the jounce bumper inside the airbag, it replaces the factory jounce bumper (bump stop). Axle travel is exactly the same.

I just got back from a 4,800 mile trip pulling the trailer all the way and was so glad to have the system on the truck. It is just so much more stable than with the factory springs alone. I inflate to 90 psi when towing and 5 psi when not.

Any issues with your setup? When I contacted my dealer they are trying to sell me firestones bags but the air lift compressor. I like that air lift has the built in jounce. Many thanks for your opinion.
@EpicCowlick
@EpicCowlick 7 жыл бұрын
I actually had that setup on my previous truck and never had any problems. This time around I went all Air Lift partly because of the internal bumper. When you compare the Air Lift and Firestone side by side the Air Lift is more substantial and the Firestone feels "thinner". But like I said, my previous Firestones worked great for the 6.5 years I had them. The big reason people went with Firestone bags in the past was because the Air Lifts were difficult to install. This new version is pretty straightforward as the video shows.

I just purchased a 2010 Ford F350 King Ranch with a 6.4 Diesel... Ride is horrible with stock shocks.. I am thinking about changing shocks and adding air bags.. Did the air bags help with the ride when you are NOT towing? Thanks
@EpicCowlick
@EpicCowlick 6 жыл бұрын
Airbags are normally at the lowest inflation pressure (5 psi) when not towing. If they are filled at even 25 psi or more the rear end gets very firm. Most people don't like that but some do. The OEM Ford shocks are notorious for being crappy. Upgrade to Fox or true Rancho 9000 series for a huge upgrade.

I had a B&W companion on my last truck which was a 2011. The hitch did not interfere underneath with the airbags but I did have to loosen one side plate to get the airbag bolts in place. No biggie. I can't say for sure as I haven't seen that combo but it should not be a problem. LInks to the airbags and airlift system are in the video description. I will never have a truck without airbags again. They make the truck so much more stable when towing heavy.

@EpicCowlick
@EpicCowlick 6 жыл бұрын
The fifth wheel puts just over 3,500 on the hitch over the axle. Without the airbags, the truck sags too much. It's a heavy trailer and loads up to a little over 18,000. Dry is 4,000 less. GVWR on this truck is 11,500 but it is different truck-to-truck depending on how it is setup.

For a fifth wheel, I'm not sure there is a scenario since the load is always in the center of the axle. For an in-bed camper? Sure, you can see how the load may be heavier on one side or the other. Are those the 20x8 wheels? I have aftermarket wheels I swapped from my old truck to new, but like the new stocks. How is the towing of the 5th wheel with 37x12.50s on that narrow tire? I would like to fit 37s on stocks and still tow
@EpicCowlick
@EpicCowlick 6 жыл бұрын
They're the factory 20X8 wheels. Towing with big 37 inch tires have an impact. They screw up the final drive gearing and effectively make the rear end something less than 3:31. If it wasn't for the powerful 6.7L engine, I'd be looking to re-gear the differentials to correct. I wouldn't call a 12.50 inch wide tire a narrow tire but it does great towing even when very heavy. No problems there. Technically the tire needs a 8.5 inch wheel but there's no problem running on the 8 inch OEMs.

If all I needed the truck for was to pull the trailer, a dually would be fine. But I need the truck for plenty of other duties where a dually would be a pain or completely usuitable. I won't keep this trailer forever and the next one I can choose more carefully.

The airbags don't change those distances. They are determined by the fifth wheel hitch and bed height. My B&W companion that uses the Ford 5th wheel prep puts my trailer at 7-8 inches clearance. Airbags determine the distance between the rear wheel and the bed.

Thank you for the response. Reason why I was asking, is because I have those same bags on my chevy 2500 and I have about 6.5 inches of clearence. And my toyhauler doesn't sit level with the rear sitting lower. I guess I'll look into lifting the trailer a little but I'm worried about going to high and hitting over passes. What's that total height of your trailer?
@EpicCowlick
@EpicCowlick 7 жыл бұрын
My trailer has had the axles flipped which raised the trailer total height 4 inches. You can see from the video that I need every inch of that with my truck having 37 inch tires and the new higher bed rails. The part of the video where it flips images between inflated and deflated is pretty cool. My trailer is actually nose-down when the airbags are deflated. It's perfectly level inflated. The total height on the trailer after the axle flip is 13 feet 6 inches which is up there. I do have to pay attention to clearance signs at gas stations and in-town overpasses. It's never been a problem but I am in the habit of looking.

Thank you so much for the response. I have a toyhauler that's sits 13.4 already and it came with the axle flipped already.
