Owned a 2010 Dodge Ram with a hemi was a nice ride lots of power towed okay. Bought a 2016 Ford F-150 5.0 loved this truck had the power the sounds and fuel eco. One day I was in my ford dealer and took a 2018 Ford F-150 2.7 ecoboast and wow. When you throw that thing into sport mode hands down it has more torque then my 5.0 liter. Now I own a 2018 Ford F-150 2.7 ecoboost and Does everything that I need in a truck plus gets a little better fuel eco then my 2016 Ford F-150 5.0 and with the rear end gearing I can tow 8200 lbs. Nice truck

I have a 2016 2.7 Ecoboost. That engine is a beast. The acceleration is awesome and the gas pedal is very sensible. It's like driving a sport truck, but with very decent fuel economy. Clearly the best engine for anyone who doesn't care about towing and who uses it for daily driving like me.

I have a 2015 F150 with a 2.7, I love it! I have to resist the Temptation of racing V8 Chevy' and Dodge trucks. With the Lighter Weight and the Twin Turbo acceleration, it's funny to see their reaction!
@aday16377 жыл бұрын
Ford figured out what 90% need in a truck and designed the 2.7 eco to match that need. The comment below is bogus. A company the size of Ford didn't roll this design off the line with no forethought in mind. Towing, power, speed, economy, drive-ability, and durability are all hallmarks. I did some research before writing this. Statistically, over 90% never tow more than 7500 lbs (most don't ever tow) so this truck was designed for the masses. Most who tow regularly will be using a 250 or up anyhow. Fuel economy is the number one consideration, statistically and this one does the job better than the competition. And I'm not a Ford man. I always bought and drove Dodges (I've had 12 of them). This is the first new Ford truck I've ever purchased. I tested all brands including the so called imports. This one stuck out as much much better than all the rest.

I have a new 2015 F 150 that I bought on 2/14/16 with the 2.7 . I love it, my old truck was a 2004 Dodge with the 4.7 V8. I love this 2.7 motor, it seems to have more power than my dodge and better gas mileage. You need to drive one to see for yourself. i have no need to tow anything, so I don,t need a bigger motor. The auotstop is know big deal, I use to shut if off all the time. To tell you the truth the only time you notice it, is if you are looking for it. This motor is only 800.00 more than the standard V 6. Ford has a winner in this motor i think.

I picked up a new `18 F-150 2.7L on black friday and it works for me. Took it out to the Front Range in Colorado during a high wind warning. (85mph on the Rocky Flats) and it was a nice trip. Plenty of power through Coal Creek Canyon. A local store owner had a `15 3.5L F-150 and it just recently burned a hole in #2 piston at 80k miles. His son works in a Ford dealer and says the 2.7 is way better.
@MrCefink8 жыл бұрын
Kyle - your assessment is dead on. This motor combined with the lighter-weight materials to provide proper power-to-weight ratio is the future of the truck market.I've only had my '16 F150 with the 2.7 for exactly 1 week now and I love it. Proof I'm not a fanboy - I reluctantly sold my '06 Silverado with the 4.8L that 10 years ago I thought would save me gas money to get this truck. It was getting 14mpg combined. I'll be honest, the new '16 Silverado was my first test drive, then the '16 Sierra. Then I swallowed my pride and drove the 2.7L F150 which has more HP and more torque than my old Chevy with better mpg. I stopped looking and bought it. To the commenters who say the 'net is filled with stories of unhappy customers... tell me, where else would you go if you were unhappy? It's the same principle with the news: all news is bad because it's what gets the attention. Nobody adds up all the happy owners because they don't stop to say "I'm happy." If they did, others don't bother to read it.

Big Bossman the real problem are the junk timing chains. Turbos and BOV's also fail outside the warranty and cost a ton, but most dealers will quote you $2-3k for replacing the timing chains, guides, phasers, etc. The drivetrain shudder is another common issue. You can ignore it, but it is really bad to do so, as it hammers bearings, seals, mounts etc. City driving an ecoboost is terrible for the engine. Do a used oil analysis in the spring and be prepared to be shocked at how diluted your engine oil has become. The ecoboosts dump tons of fuel in the oil, which is horrible for the timing chain, bearings, seals, etc. The 5.0 would have been the better option. Bad choice bro, sorry.

Big Bossman I suppose you mean chronic issues. One can't claim never but since the eco turbo is water cooled the same issues are not in play as before. It would not surprise me that others will incorporate similar ideas moving forward. The pep when needed along with the decent gas mileage for a two ton vehicle is impressive without adding a lot of technology. The engine durability is enhanced since it is based off of a diesel.

I'm averaging 20.3mpg with a heavy foot. No....no you can't get better than that in a full size truck. The 5.3 can barely muster 18.5mpg under those same conditions and has noticeably less power. The hemi and the iforce can't even sniff 16mpg in those conditions.

I have a 2015 2.7L XL CC 4x4 purchased at end of Dec. '15. Kyle, you are correct about "building boost at higher speeds, and killing fuel mileage"... I just took it on a 1000+ mi. round trip where all the interstate speed limits were 70, and I pushed it 78-80 over mountains with 5 fat people in it (lol) literally over 1000lbs of people + cargo... The truck ran just fine, but sucked "extra" fuel, returning "only" an average of 19.7mpg. I say "only" because when I travel in PA at lower speeds, I have achieved 23.8mpg on a 400mi round trip. With short trips (wife's 4 mile commute) in the winter, the worst I have seen was 17mpg. I am happy with my choice, as I find these figures hard to compete with. I DO wish the start-stop feature could be OFF by DEFAULT (I live in the country, where this is just annoying -it always manages to shut off just when I'm ready to GO!) but I still love my truck. As far as long term reliability, I believe this engine is possibly even more durable than the 3.5L (with the CGI block and all...). Time will tell, tho...I plan on keeping it "forever".

Carpeted the truck bed, installed a tonneau cover and can carry spouses and daughter bags on any long distance trip!!(nothing in the cabs,cept cooler!) Now the BAD part. Take a 900 mile trip you’ll get fatigued. Where to rest? Not in the back seat. That back seats sits at 90#(degrees). Straight up and down. Ford does not think of passengers or I’d buy a newer one. The new rams have reclining back seats and they are wonderful!! The rest of the truck is big and heavy. Lousy gas mileage, great ride! Take your choice! Ford or Ram.

I did some reading and found that oil & oil pan problems have been reported by other F150-2.7 L EcoBoost owners. When you did your video in Feb of 2016, your experience paralleled mine- overwhelmingly positive. However, now I am not so sure. The thing I worry about with the 2.7l is longevity. Will it last? I drive my trucks for years, 200k miles or more. Do I want to chance buying these turbo engines that might continue to go out, or do I want a tried and true 5l v8? That's proven itself. Same goes for the 3.5l ecoboost. Will it last?

You won't be disappointed with the 2.7 and its power curve. If you live at any high altitude I would highly suggest the Eco over the 5.0 coyote motor. The only thing that you may miss is the sound a V8 makes but you quickly forget about that aspect from all of the other pros of this small but mighty motor.
@KyleBusch1248 жыл бұрын
2010V6RAV4 the issues you are describing are for the very early 3.5 ecoboost...and the percentage of failures, even in the early year models, are very low and on par with any other engine in the market. Every truck manufacturer has good and bad points with their vehicles, I've personally owned many of them in my life and I have to say that ford makes a great product...they wouldn't be the number one selling truck manufacturer if they build a lackluster vehicles. Now the longevity of this motor is a mystery yet, however, the early ecoboost motors (the ones that you say have a bunch of issues) are hitting 200k and beyond miles without any issues besides normal maintenance so I am not concerned with my purchase. Again, everyone has opinions on what they like and don't like...I like this engine and I could see myself never owning a V8 gas pickup in the future since this 2.7 is just as powerful, turns lower rpm (in theory making them last longer), and are more fuel efficient (I have done the math and yes my boost gets the 22-23 on the highway like I stated in the video and for a 4wd truck that's good in my book). I'll keep my truck, you keep your RAV4.
@KyleBusch1248 жыл бұрын
2010V6RAV4 I never once said that the 5.0 was an unreliable motor... Also the video is about the 2.7 and MY opinion on that motor in particular. I understand that the 3.5 isn't perfect but let's be honest... When you sell over 700k f150's in 2015 (vast majority of them being an ecoboost of some sort) ford would not risk their cash cow vehicle for unreliability. When you you look at the GM twins they sold a combined 600k and ram sold just over 400k trucks last year... All of which have had some type of issue with their engines. Ram has had several issues with their Hemi consuming oil and transmission issues while GM has been plagued with dropped valves in their 6.2 and so many recalls it's hard to keep them straight. I am by no means a fan boy I do a ton of research before buying anything and I felt (and still feel) that I made a good choice when I purchased my truck. Also btw if you really want to drill down the reliability of the 2.7 find me just one engine failure... It's a solid engine and even on Edmonds long term test 2.7 f150 they have had nothing but regular maintenance... No carbon, no engines blowing up...nothing.

According to my friends at the dealership there have been engine failures but I'd buy one and get the extended warranty. In the market for one , should I be concerned about high mileage? Like 150k plus ?
@KyleBusch124 Жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t be concerned with a 150k mile 2.7, they really built these motors well. That being said, I no longer own a 2.7 and since moved to a 2021 5.0. I towed many many trouble free miles with my 2.7 and was still running like a top when I traded it in at 100k miles.

I purchased this truck the other day and am picking it up tomorrow but I'm concerned with the auto start/stop feature (they didn't tell me about that at the dealership). I'm coming from a Silverado 1500 with a traditional V8 engine. what are your thought on the feature? is it annoying? do you find it shuts off at the wrong time like when the light turns green? do you find yourself waiting for it to turn back on? thanks
@KyleBusch1248 жыл бұрын
I'll be honest and say it takes a few days to get used to it but at the same time the system work very well. By the time you move your foot from the brake to the gas peddle the truck is fired back up and ready to go... No waiting around for it to start back up. I've tried to trick the truck a few times when it was new by having the system activate and mid process of it shutting down I let off the brake and it just fires right back up without an issue. I actually really like the auto start/stop and has saved me a decent about of fuel with my commute through the city. Some like it, some don't... I just happen to like it.

Just traded in my 4x4 off-road 5.0 in for the ecoboost 2.7 twin turbo. At first I was like oh Sh_t what did I do. Now after driving the ecoboost, I'm like WOW. This thing has got some nuts. Haven't tried pulling the boat in & out of the ramp. Little nervous about that one. My 5.0 was little over 3 years old and only had 31,000 miles. Reason for trading it was I had had it with the 13-14mpg. Also when I pull hog trailer or the boat I would get between 9-10 mpg. That sucked. Although I loved the truck and all the power it had. Lets hope my new ecoboost doesn't let me down. One other thing on my new truck, I love all the new bells & whistles that come with it.

I have a 2015 extended cab 2.7 Sport package 4x4 in Florida and can tell you my gas mileage is no where as advertised nor close to what others claim. Best that I ever got was 19.5 and I average 17.8. All my mileage calculated on paper, not what the gauge says. When I pull my all aluminum RV that weighs about 5800 pounds I average about 10.5 MPG. I'm very disappointed in the gas mileage on this truck...

That gas mileage to me seems unreal but if its true I'd be interested in trading in my 2013 F150 S-CREW. I went with the 3.5 Eco since it promised a little better millage over the V8 and regret it. At first 3.5eco was great but it is a complex motor and I think Ford is still learning how to modify the design to be more reliable mine has be in the shop 2 times for minor turbo issues under warranty then 6 months out of warranty at 28K miles it needed a spark plug and coil pack. Fuel mileage is generally about 13.2MPG with 80/20 city/Hwy (no load or tow). Now the transmission is intermittently acting funky and I think its the speed sensor (Ford can't figure it out so far). Oh and the rear window doesn't slide open any more and Ford thinks a I need a new rear window so I didn't bother fixing it. Love the truck but wish it was more reliable. If they figured things out for the 2.7 or up and coming 3.5eco (next generation) with 10 speed transmission they will have a winner otherwise I'll have to look at GM.

do you know if the maintenance cost will end up being more for the ecoboost engines than the 5.0's?
@KyleBusch1248 жыл бұрын
I am not sure on what engine will cost more to maintain, however, general maintenance is going to be about the same with oil changes, filters, plugs, ect. Now, if a turbo goes out then yes it will cost more because it's an extra component over the 5.0 but overall I'm willing to bet it's going to be about the same cost over the course of the lifetime of the engine.
@cowboys4020058 жыл бұрын
Kyle Busch ok cool thanks for responding. Do you have any knowledge if the eb's are still having any problems? Just worry with reliability with those.
@KyleBusch1248 жыл бұрын
cowboys402005 there really hasn't been much issue with the 2.7 besides a TSB about a small oil leak that the dealer will fix before purchase (these 2.7 were effected if it was manufactured before September 15') otherwise I haven't heard of anything else. The 3.5 boost had issues back in 2011 when they were new but those issues have since been fixed and people have reported being trouble free for over 200k miles. That being said, if you look deep enough you'll find one off situations on the reliably of any engine, the ecoboost is no exception but overall they have been just as reliable as any other engine platform out there.

@yousufkan69608 жыл бұрын
why does mpg decrease during colder temperatures
@KyleBusch1248 жыл бұрын
Mileage goes down in cold weather because the air density is higher which requires more fuel for a proper mix. Also, and probably the biggest reason is the fact that when it gets cold all the oils in the engine, transmission, and differentials get really thick which causes large amounts of drag until it warms up. Other factors is winter blend fuel just simply isn't as efficient at burning completely as summer time fuels due to all the additives to make the fuel not freeze.

Since this video my mileage is up to around 23 MPG on a regular bases and I have never been short of power. Really my only complaint are to the tires, they aren't the best in the snow. It's a good motor, you'll enjoy it but do yourself a favor and drive them both...either way you can't go wrong.
