My husband is a truck driver, the truck stops you mentioned are the ONLY ones we'll go to. Last year I traveled to TX from WV alone. I stopped at the truck stops to sleep as well. PLEASE DO NOT sleep at rest stops at all! I'm on the road traveling with my husband full time, rest area's are horrible & incredibly unsafe for both sexes. There's been a crazy high amount recently of women being assaulted when they walk into the ladies room. Just last week outside of Gary IN a women was raped at the rest area at 11pm. Men are hiding in the stalls and attack you from behind. Men are being robbed as well. Please research if you need to. Walmart is a great place for travelers. you'll see many RV's out west and in the South at Walmart. Semi's as well. We stay South of Nashville at a Walmart in TN when passing through. Sleeping on side roads is called "stealth" I'd go to a good neighborhood and sleep there vs a rest stop. Please I beg of you, for your safety and possibly your life, stay away from rest area's. There's plenty of folks who have made you tube video pertaining to it. Think John & Jade recently posted one where she was assaulted. They are both semi drivers as well. It's horrible out here anymore. Almost weekly we hear of a driver being shot at a bad truck stop and folks being assaulted at rest areas. It's also been on the news. It's not safe, I just can't stress this enough. Be safe dear!

I definitely agree that truck stops are a safe place to stop for the most part. my boyfriend is a trucker and I travel with him, but there's actually truck stops that even we won't stop at because they're so sketchy. the petro & TA in Ontario, California and the Pilot in Denver, CO are the main ones we try to avoid. If you're planning on staying at one in a car I would definitely just look up the reviews first to make sure it's a safe place to stop. Also we've never had any problems in Castaic either :)

That's exactly what I did when travelling around the western states this past summer: slept in my car at the truck stops you mentioned and rest areas. I never had any problems, either. I felt like a weirdo sometimes, washing up and washing hair in truck stop bathrooms, etc, but I see that I'm not the only lone female traveller sleeping in her car! And funny enough, I own a Yaris (though travelled in a Nissan Rogue).

🍔🍔🍔🍔🍔🍔 I traveled and slept in my car for a month. Best month ever. I slept in my car at a friends farm, lots of rest stops and slept at a turn out twice. One turn out was in a canyon off the 101 in Oregon and the other turn out was right off the 101 right next to the ocean with a cliff. The crashing waves lulled me to sleep. It was great. And for like a week I stayed at a friends house in Seattle. I honestly can't wait to do this again.

Took a trip from Indianapolis to the east coast, using walmart parking lots at night to car sleep, then go and visit cities during the day on my bike. Worked out great. I would usually go either the night I got there or morning after into walmart to buy something as well so I was a customer. Learned to open all 4 windows so there was no condensation, and slept fully extended in back on a camping inflatable mat and zero degree sleeping bag, always had my gun in the passengers seat under clothes if I needed to grab it quick. Everything was smooth

I went from Indy to Albuquerque this month, and I used rest areas and truck stops all the way. I have an SUV so I was able to drop one seat and sleep stretched out, after a fashion (kind of a boomerang shape) and was so comfortable on just a folded up blanket. I definitely can't wait to plan another trip!

I guess i was way ahead of my time. Ilived in my 1957 Dodge car when i was a teenager, back in the 60's in California. My favorite places to sleep were beside the ocean along highway 101, or to pull into an orange or lemon grove and park between the trees.

I've heard too hospital and hotel parking lots work well for vehicular slumber. Spent last Friday night at a Walmart in Cheboygan and survived the experience beautifully. The cool night made it very comfortable. Others were taking the plunge too - an RV bus pulling a car and a van with an air conditioner on the roof, along with an SUV. Double Cheeseburger with lettuce, lotsa tomato, and french fries done extra crispy please from Clyde's Drive In, St. Ignace. Oh, the root beer? Make it a large. At least 1200 calories - probably a lot more. But man, that's a burger! PS I always watch you Katie from start to finish - and I always tune in. Surprised everyone doesn't follow my example.

I don't understand the fear of truckers some women have either. Do you think that someone on such a tight schedule that they are driving through the night has time to pull over, look for a lone female, watch her long enough to see if she is vulnerable, wait for an opportunity to do something, and then hope that they aren't seen on camera or by another driver? Isn't it more likely that they are actually at an all-night truck stop to, I don't know, get some sleep while trying to drive a truck all night?

yourmomdoes I understand the fear that some people have about truckers at truck stops at night. There was an episode of cops, where a cop pulled over a big rig and, the the big rig driver was this skinny little man wearing women's underwear while driving and he had crystal meth in his possession and a hooker from Central Avenue and this is the main drag in Albuquerque New Mexico. At night. So see, there's some weird weird stuff and weird people who are drivers of trucks that you have to look out for and beware of.

It's really interesting to see what makes other people feel safe or uncomfortable. If it's dark out, the only place I really feel safe sleeping in my car is at a Walmart. They're 24 hours, they have adiquit lighting, and if anything untoward were to happen they have multiple cameras covering their parking lots. The place I feel most cofortable is kind of middle parking lot rows, under a light, on the side that the doors stay open for 24 hours. That way, your surroundings are completely visable, but your car isn't sticking out like a sore thumb in the vast empty lot. If it's daytime and I really just need like a 30 minute to an hour nap, I'll typically choose a shopping center or store that has visable cameras. I'll park closer to the back of the parking lot, usually with my door side against one of those grassy median things. That way I don't have to worry about someone pulling up right next to me on the side that I'm sleeping on. Either way, no matter where I am, I have to feel safe in the location before I even think about sleeping there. If it feels kinda run down or like it may not be the best part of town or something, I'll keep moving until I find a place that feels relatively safe. 🍔

Walmart is an awesome place depending on the area you live in. if you live in a place that has higher crime rates then its obviously going to be riskier to sleep anywhere there in your car. but I've definitely used a walmart parking lot a good bit and I've never really felt unsafe, but i knew the area i was in and felt comfortable to stay there. I've also parked in apartment complexes that have guest parking spots because you know it's a safe area and people probably wont even realized there is a person in the car. Hamburger lol im on my laptop xD

I actually have found some major hotel chains that you can park overnight without having security or local police knocking on your window. In fact a Marriott I use to work for I found that 2 cop cars parked next to a dirty old car that had flat tires and filled with boxes, and didn't do a thing about for MONTHS. So I felt ok sleeping in my car. And this was during the winter. So I toughed it out UNLESS it was really really cold.

Bob Copeland Lol great idea but you only earn shower credits on fuel. Special occasion you may earn on store purchases but you have to spend about $120 to get a free shower. About 50 gals of Fuel (not gas) a day will get you a daily shower anywhere. 500galls a month may get you unlimited free showers. $10 to $12 is average price for non-CDL drivers.

LOL ... Hamburger. First time viewer and subscriber. I started to work for Wal-Mart years ago down in Northwest Arkansas when Sam was still alive. No, he never camped out or anything unless he was on a hunting trip. However, he did drive around in an old 1979 Ford F150 pickup truck for years and can now be seen at the Wal-Mart museum in his very first old Ben Franklin 5 & dime in Bentonville, Arkansas. Sam did however have a Cessna airplane that he flew himself around in along with his old dog Roy. He would scout for new locations and do surprise store visits. He would land at a local airport, call the store and have an assistant manager come and pick him up. Ok, as far as overnighting at Wal-Mart stores, for the most part they are perfectly safe depending on location. Example, East St. Louis vs Branson West, Missouri. Some cities like Branson, Missouri, for instance, have an ordinance banning overnight parking. However, drive 12 miles west to Branson West (population 400) and you would be very welcome. (This was the first store that I managed years ago), and you are very welcome to stay. Now, Wal-Mart is huge on security cameras and they are all digital so no more of the "grainy" videos. I advise people to park under a light, about halfway between the front of the store and the street and make sure that you can see a video camera pointed in your direction. Also, all of the lights have a sign on them showing that video surveillance cameras are in use.

🍔 These last 2 years I became a cheap-ass road tripper. I would drive 4 hours during the night to go in wilderness backpacking trips...& as I got older, I would need to stop along the way for cat naps. Then I took a few longer trips 1/2way across the country & slept in my car to save $. I do the rest stop thing too. One morning I had the epiphany of taking a shower at Flying J to limit motel stays even more. That was a game changer for me. I did have 1 night at a rest stop that was sketchy, though nothing happened. I woke up at 3:30am to use the bathroom. I sat at a picnic to put my shoes on. When I was bent over tying my shoes, some 20-ish yr old dude walks right past me, concentrating on his phone, not seeming to notice me. But it made me pay attention to my surroundings. When I got to the women’s bathroom, there he was...standing 10 ft from the women’s bathroom door, still on his phone. BTW, the women’s b-room was further away than the men’s. As I entered, there was an older woman in there who talked to me as she was leaving (she was not affiliated with the young man). When I returned to my car, this dude was now sitting at the picnic table by my car I had tied my shoes at. Still focusing on his phone. I got back into my car. As soon as I shut my door, he abruptly got up & quickly walked past my driver door, presumably to return to his car. I quickly started my engine, which auto-locks the doors. And left. I was trying to think of a benign reason a man would walk over & stand by the women’s bathroom at 3:30am. Then go back to his car via the picnic table. This was all in a matter of :05 min or so. Nothing happened, but my spidey sense was working overtime, lol. Though I will continue to stay at rest stops.

Katie, have you ever done a vehicle tour or showed how you sleep in (a) your small car? I've looked through your videos and it seems like all your videos are of you sitting in the front seat talking to the camera :)

I was working out of town recently and money got real tight do I slept in my car for a couple of weeks at the rest stop there. I had no issues, had a bathroom when needed and it was relatively quiet where I was staying. I was able to bathe using the bathroom sink and change clothes in the universal bathroom.

Pilot and Flying J I've never had a problem. They have showers too. I've never had a problem in rest stops either. I've traveled coast to coast.

You can park at garage parking lot and train stop parking lots

Just watch for walmart signs. They do but it depends on the management at that location and the city/state laws from what I was told. overall they will allow.........
I know the exact loves in castaic you are talking about. I went there to sleep, but decided not to because it was too crowded and small. There was a good Walmart nearby though that I used.

What do you recommend to cover your side windows besides curtains that will be easy to get on and off ? Also , do you eventually plan to live in one place in a regular home/apt ?

Question #1... Are truck stop showers available to anyone or just truckers? #2... Would I WANT to use their showers if they are available?

Hamburger!! I think you are a wonderfully entertaining and lovey open person. I hope you do not get too many mean comment (I did see one below) however many KZbin'ers seem to have to suffer them. Shake them off! You are very enjoyable to watch and I love hearing about your life!

Rest Areas In Wyoming prohibits sleeping in cars day and night. And pilot and flying j told me and few other people to not sleep in their parking lot.

Hamburger. I would suggest for the rest area thing, sleep at one on Tolled highways. Basically it's like a rest stop with 24/7 security. I would never fo a traditional rest stop

Yes but unfortunately a lot of cities are passing ordinances that prevent Walmart from allowing overnight parking. It's not Walmart, it's the cities that are being jerkfaces!

I was evicted from a 24hr Walmart by the police, Walmart has the carriage boys sniches and also the parking lot clearners. I felt harassed by one who kept that flashing light on me, but I didn't have the blocking curtains up, its not fun. I was very afraid of the police, plus those crazy customers who shop at all hours of the day and night.

*burger emoji* - Also, side note for anyone doing this in Australia; QLD makes things a little trickier for car/van-sleepers ( www.legislation.qld.gov.au/legisltn/current/c/citybrisa10.pdf ), personally everytime I've tried sleeping in any sort of shop's parking lot, I've always had cops knock on my door... But, the 2 options you mentioned are generally legal (just not often the ones that you mentioned other people suggested), however both of those can be pretty noisy as generally on highways... Here in QLD, its useful to remember National Parks are $5pn & patrolled by a park ranger so generally pretty safe, quiet, & most at least have toilets, some with showers & other facilities. So in Queensland, national parks are often my go-to... Happy travels or vehicle-sleeping :-) & Thanks for the video. Emma.

Not necessarily outside, but I know from experience that a man sleeping in a vehicle is equipped to pee in a re-closable container set aside exclusively for that purpose. Empty antifreeze jugs are ideal.

I know you mentioned hotel parking lots. Do you park near other cars to be less noticeable?
