I let a hobo sleep on my couch one night. I seen him at 7-11 on my lunch break, then when I got off at 1am he was still there. I knew what was up and could tell he just wanted to sleep comfortably. I talked to him for about 15 minutes and then told him he could pass out at my place if he wanted. He was stoked lol. It was only 30 degrees out so I just put myself in his shoes for a moment. We got back to my place and my roommate was still up playing COD and was like wtf lol. He didn't mind though. He grew up damn near homeless in lower east side manhattan. Dude set on the couch, and within 10 minutes was knocked out. He left the next morning without saying anything. About 6 months go by and I'm at a Wendy's with a friend, and the homeless guy is working there. He thanked me and said I changed his view on things.

I hope people don't make their parking decisions on bathroom facilities. When I escaped my abusive husband and lived in my SUV for a while, I just used a low profile plastic storage bin that had a locking lid, covered by a plastic kitchen bag. I always had to go in the middle of the night and first thing in the morning and being prepared in the car kept me sane. I, also, parked on a corner at someone's side yard fence in residential neighborhoods. Was never afraid and slept like a baby. Just switched it up each night. I purchased a 3 month YMCA membership and showered there every morning. Plus they had a pool and all the ammenities. Best deal ever. Most free I've ever felt in my entire life.

Hey Woman! So glad you got out of a bad relationship. Most women stay too long. Personally, I lived on a sailboat for a year, learned so much about myself, got strong, was Very happy and muchmuch later left my husb of 10 years once I could see I was miserable. I think a woman being inependent in this way makes them very very strong. I’m currently taking my little nest egg to the Islands to return to happy now that I am no longer full-time Mom. If I am lucky, will return to that happy place. Mahalo Sweet One!

Yes, a portable toilet from Bunnings is good idea, fits into car nicely, put kitty litter or sawdust in it, the poo won't smell. Another bucket for number "ones" which can be tipped onto any garden or grass site and rinsed out with a bit of water. Just make sure car windows are blacked out for if you use the toilet in the car.

@thegamemaster2000
@thegamemaster2000 7 жыл бұрын
find the cameras and park there. carry Mace with you. don't sit in the trucker lounge or eat at the trucker tables. if you shower make sure you can get in and out with no wait time. don't wander around at night, and park under the lights. if at any time you feel unsafe then leave. truckers are not the hero's we use to be, there are nice ones out there but I feel there are more lonely loose moral drivers than previous decades. just stay safe, and keep to your own. also truck stops are a hot bed for prostitution. so also cop harassment and possible kidnappings are possible for the sex trade industry
@thegamemaster2000
@thegamemaster2000 7 жыл бұрын
teakertownbittersweet it really depends on where you are at in the country. well lit rest areas that have patrols are very safe. Walmarts with security cameras are pretty safe. at home would be best, or a secure hotel would be optional. but I'm assuming you are wanting to live the hobo life style. just keep in mind that America in general has a huge sex trafficking problem and it's climbing at an alarming rate. be safe, trust your gut, don't be afraid to leave or if in serious doubt call the cops. don't trust anyone. hell, don't trust what I say. I'm a trucker and we are a huge part of the problem. lmao

Yes!!! It’s criminal that my car has more rights to be places than I do. More rights. Should be unconstitutional to pass laws against this. They are like “homeless Nuremberg laws” against PEOPLE. They are creating an untouchable class of people. These laws are attempts to pass the buck at best, or to run people out and remove their ability to survive. How are these laws being passed? It’s CRIMINAL. We need real solutions, not laws against people we don’t like. Homeless people don’t even get “separate but equal” laws-just laws against EXISTENCE.
@spiralsun1

Christopher N So true!! Hall-monitor ladies walking dogs and using their gossip urges to call the police to attack you because they caused laws to be passed against you. The nazi is always hiding in people... and rationalized. Makes me think of those pictures of nazis with muzzled attack dogs. Call the gestappo!!! I live in my car because they constructed a society with no place for me or someone like me. I am different from most people on several psychological metrics like IQ and Openness, along with being transgender so all I have felt my whole life is like an ostracized alien.. (not an alien ostrich, just to be clear. But that would be funny!) 🤔

I wouldn't. I used to work grave at a family restaurant, and the cops knew all the employees cars, and even some of the regulars, and they would ask about weird cars in the parking lot. Diners usually give police discounts and free beverages so they hang out overnight. It's free security. And they get to know the restaurants pretty well because of it.

I bicycled around the world for 4 years and slept in a tent every night. I also slept in Buddhist temples, cemeteries, open fields, dug outs of a baseball field, on the edge of city parks, in abandoned buildings, a few caves and asked numerous people if I could sleep in their backyard. I was never bothered and it's far better than sleeping in a car. You should use a tent, it gives you lots of options.

I did this and I highly recommend if you have the money to get a gym membership. It’s not healthy staying your car the whole day. Also many are only $30 a month and also they offer bathrooms and showers. It’s a good way to stay in shape as you won’t be constantly sitting in a car and it gives you the benefit of showers and bathrooms. Highly recommend it.

they don't want people to live in cars or rvs but they charge unaffordable levels for rent, keep the minimum wage at $7.25 when productivity has nearly tripled that amount as wages have stayed stagnant since the 1970s. I own the car why on earth cant I sleep in it?? Is sleeping on the street supposed to be better then a car?? Can you just leave people alone without threatening and committing violence, fines, harassment and arrest??

A Mas... This is my biggest fear. That rent/mortgages will increase but legislation will eventually make it impossible to live in a vehicle. Talk about being stuck between a rock and a hard place. This could be me in a couple of years! This could be anyone of us who only rely on Social Security, a small pension or a few dollars sitting idle in a bank. You folks living this way right now… Please, don’t mess it up for the rest of us future vandwellers…. Thanks

Well, folks, there is one thing you can do about it....VOTE! It's a known fact that lower-income people tend not to vote. At least, not anywhere near to the extent that more mainstream middle-class and upper-class people vote. One thing I never understood is why people who are most likely to be affected by government policies (at all levels of government -- e.g., minimum wage, health care/medicaid, overnight parking, etc.) fail to do the one thing that is within their power to do: *vote.* This is how Republicans -- even the most ridiculous, unqualified clowns -- win elections...their constituents *_vote,_* and ours don't. Especially in the midterm years between presidential elections. Those elections count, too, people! Every congressperson and 1/3 of senators are up for election *every two years.* But left-wing voters, who are more sympathetic to the plight of the poor, tend to sit out those elections, while the conservatives get their asses to the polls. This problem is exacerbated by the inequities of the Electoral College, where small states (which tend to be Republican) outnumber the larger ones (which tend to lean Democratic). But even though the small states have fewer people, they get more senators, because those fewer people are divided up among a larger number of (small) states. (Remember that the small states get the same number of senators as the large ones.) That means they get more voting power in Congress *_and_* they get more voting power when it comes to the presidency. That's unfair, but there's nothing we can do about it. All we can do is get to the polls and vote. So let's all at least do *_that,_* okay??? We have an election coming up in November -- that's next month. Don't forget! Don't blow it off! (And of course, this should go without saying, but vote for people who will help you, not hurt you. Don't vote for politicians who want to take away your healthcare or who want to allow big corporations to rip off their customers & employees and get away with it. That's another thing I never understood -- why lower-income people and working-class folks would vote against their own interests. Why would you vote for a politician who does the things I just mentioned? Or who refuses to increase the minimum wage or extend unemployment insurance during times of economic crisis? And yet you do it all the time! Stop it!)

I slept in my car for a few months a couple summers ago after life hit me pretty hard. The hardest part was finding a place to shower that didn't cost an arm and a leg. I ended up getting a Planet Fitness membership for like $30/mo, I think. Much cheaper than any hotel or Flying J shower. As for where to sleep, yep Walmart is the spot. Or rest stops. I also slept in large apartment complex parking lots. Probably not legal but as long as you're not there for more than a night or two at a time, you'll probably be okay. Never considered a hospital but that is a great idea.

In my 20's I drove around the country for a couple of months living in a van. Parked in a hotel lot one night and woke up with two flat tires. There were screws in each tire. While changing the tires in the morning, the hotel owner came out and demanded to know why I was parked there overnight and was going to call the police if I didn't pay them the nightly room charge. Only bad experience. Rest areas are a bit dangerous. You get the nomadic thieves that approach you with the old "hey buddy, I'm stranded and just need a few bucks for gas." Watch out, they're "casing the joint" so to speak. Truck stops were annoying because of the lot lizards. (prostitutes) Being male, I was a target and they wouldn't leave me alone.

I'm not at the moment, but ignorance like yours is why most people would actually rather rely on a shelter or charity instead of alternates.

Steve Jonas not for anything, but the original poster wasn't critical of the subject matter. I believe he was eluding to the fact that the delivery of her presentation was lackluster in his opinion, and she likely wouldn't have enjoyed the positive responses she's gotten from it had she not been a subjectively attractive female. Just like the guy who brought up race when it wasn't a factor, being critical of the topic itself and negative judgement of people who've shared similar experiences wasn't a factor either. I think you're just projecting your own internalizations in your comments, but you shouldn't feel any type of way about your previous circumstances. You did what was necessary at the time and built off of that, and there's no shame in that.

Why do people find it so hard to believe she lives in a car? I've known female college students even more conventionally attractive than her that were stuck in that unfortunate situation. Hell it's not even uncommon for 17-20 somethings who are on their own and going through school. I've also been homeless (but I was a child). People are pretty naive about our homeless situation, it's not just the strung out drug addicts and people with disabilities and veterans out there. There are a lot of people you may interact with that appear "well adjusted" at your jobs and your schools who don't have a permanent residence.

To answer your question un-sarcastically, because she's attractive, intelligent and female. Society generally falls over itself trying to help (homeless) women, and the numbers we see on the streets generally reflect that. My female cousin was "homeless" as well, and reporters sought her out specifically to talk to her about her terrible circumstances, but she was there by choice, not necessity or some tragedy. She was just wanting to be on her own without rules, even though she had a home she was welcome in. Not saying that colours my perceptions completely, I've also spent some time in the field, so to speak, and it's almost 100% males I see aside from fairly far-gone female drug addicts.

I've managed hotels for years, even though we get vehicle information we don't check our parking lot. That would be way to time consuming to accomplish on a regular basis, I've never known a hotel to actually do that unless we were at a full capacity In the parking lot with a low room occupancy. . We get car Information for a lot of other purposes to that help us., maybe someone left their lights on, maybe they dropped their keys somewhere and didn't notice, it'll help us t find out who to contact. Also if a vehicle is suspicious we'll investigate, or if it's a broken down car that looks recently abandoned as we were just off the freeway, we'll check to see if its registered before we tow it away. But sleeping overnight keeping to yourself not disturbing or being suspicious you'll be fine. Lol you may even be able to get free breakfast at the hotel if you can sneak in the side door and go to the breakfast area. Usually side doors only open with key cards but if someone is exiting you can go in. Some hotels have breakfast vouchers so you won't be able to get into those but some are open free buffets, I would suggest not doing it too much as the employees may recognize you if you go In too often, so I would keep it every 2 weeks minimum to a month at a time, and go to different hotels. But yeah parking and sleeping overnight you'll be okay ;D

I work at a hotel to. 3pm-11pm. I'm the only one on staff at night so I dont check the plates, however I do a quick walk through and glance at vehicles to check for lights on or suspicious activity. I also sleep in the parking lot when I get off work to start my morning job 4am-2pm. And then back again to the hotel. So it works well for me living in my car as I'll always have a place to park without concern.

Joey, consider getting a Craftsmanship license to make and sell stuff like Jewelry and souvenirs. Register your business as an LLC plus open a Bank/ Credit Union account for that business. Since you're traveling both to heal and explore you can and should use that as the reason to find and represent the best detail of each place you visit while recording your experience to make a book (about journey/ traveling and self-healing). Use all of this to make active and passive income while building, maintaining and growing a business. Keep growing and God speed!

Be careful of mortgage brokers try to get a mortgage from a major bank or government lenders(fha). Stay away from mortgage resellers scumbags. Dont trust your house inspector to catch all pipe and electrical problems you are on your own i had so many inspectors before... Most of them cant. I am glad I backed out of mortgage and just bought a condo with cash you never know if you are going to want to move again especially when you are 22. You will be a slave to that house a slave unless you love love love the area you live in if you try to backout you will be screwed. I am renting a house and its costing me maybe 2000-3000 more per year than if I had mortgage but at least i can move when i want and there are no surpise repairs.

here's an idea.. get a job at walmart just for the uniform and name tag or whatever. quit the next day. sleep in your car wearing it. if a cop asks just tell him you're on break and you were "resting your eyes" lol. or i guess you could just make a fake walmart uniform and nametag. hell, you could do that for all the places that are open 24-7

Buy the thick reflective windshield screens, cut them to fit all of your windows, and cover one side with black fabric to block our light in your car for sleeping and privacy. Finding a place to park during the day should be easier because you won’t stand out as much, just hide a bit since your windows will be opaque in the daytime. Watch Katie Carney’s videos here on KZbin. Hers seem the most realistic of these people vlogging about living in their cars. I work nights, but I know my job would not be cool with me using their parking lot to sleep during the day. It’s for the customers. I forgot to mention that I used to sleep in my car in the daytime almost everyday when I was in college. I’d nap if I had a few hours between classes. No one ever bugged me or even checked if I was a student or not. Sometimes they can be noisy places though, so I used ear plugs. So maybe try sleeping at a college campus? Just make sure it’s not a spot that requires a parking permit.
@perdykool
@perdykool 4 жыл бұрын
I do that to. I work 2 jobs though so I can park at either job with no problems. I can also sleep anywhere in any position so this works for me. But yes hospitals, library, walmart, Lowe's, Kroger's (fred meyers) carrs (safeway) or even restaurants if you're not bothered by too much noise.

Good list, I've used WalMart myself. Rest stops are good but sometimes there are security issues. The trick is to use a rest stop that truckers stay at. Those are usually patrolled occasionally by police and many truckers will jump in to help someone if needed. Open use land, like BLM, is good too, but national parks and forests often require you to register that you are there and stay in a designated area. Many also charge an admission fee but it's pretty reasonable.

lol at this chick. My freshman year away at college I commuted an hour to work back home for the weekends. To save money on gas I would camp in my car. Finding a place to park was the worst. well lit parking lots were the worst because of the constant light shining in your windows you will never fall asleep. Also there was the constant paranoia of people looking into your car, judging you or calling the police. Sleeping in your car is illegal in most states and cities. I would park at this plaza full churches kind of near the suburbs in a rich white person neighborhood. There I was secluded and the light pollution wasn't so intense. Even then though I was using my sun reflector and button down shirts to cover the windows to stop the light. At the beginning I would sleep with my keys in the ignition in case I need to make a quick get away. Sleeping in the reclined driver's seat is not conducive to a good night's rest. The back bench, though better, was not great due to the length of my body. Even with pillows and blankets the car was never a place I could properly sleep. Due to anxiety and malaise I wouldn't fall asleep untill like 1 or 2 only to awake at the crack of dawn. In the mornings I was never fully rested. I was like a zombie the next day at work. I spent my lunch breaks napping in lieu of eating. Because I was the young guy at my job my coworkers generally thought I was hungover. Being a guy I could get away with a shirt change and face wash but even then I would look and feel like shit. I can't believe this girl looks this good if she is living in her car. Being a "hobo" is not a game. There are people out there living in their cars who genuinely have my sympathy. With her nice car, camera, laptop(likely a Mac book pro) and nice appearance, I find it hard to believe she suffers any circumstance that forces her to live in her car.

thanks man. I know somebody who had the same situation(Mexico) for 2 weeks. it is NOT something fun. at that time he just got a divorce and lost his job. and had to move back to his home place to his mother by car. he and his family are VERY poor. and could not afford hotels. she sent him money to his bank account. the constant paranoia alone is unbearable. he is a light sleeper and getting some sleep is almost impossible. even in the backseats it is not comfortable. when he feels somebody standing or walking next to his car in the night he holds his metal pipe that he places in the feet area just in case shit happens. public bathrooms sucked. the car becomes extremely hot in inside (it was summer) and he can't have his car and AC constantly running. in short he told me that he felt completely "pathetic". as soon as he arrived at his mother's house. he had a good 2 hours bath. and a long deep sleep. later he starts his life again. he could have been robbed. killed. or had his whole car hijacked. along with all his stuff. this situation is not a joke. if this lady is lying I hope one day she suffers greatly. because monetizing on peoples sufferings is very shameful. unethical. and deserves a wack on the back with a big fucking bat.

Jacob. That sounds miserable. losing your wife and job then living in your car. I respect his resilience and I am impressed. I hope he is doing well today. I don't understand how anyone cannot have paranoia while sleeping in their car. Being in a secluded area is nice because your away from everyone. The only bad thing about that is if you were assaulted or something, there is no one around to help. You have to keep two windows cracked or else the air gets stagnant and the windows fog up. You don't want foggy windshield if you suddenly need to make a quick get away. I can totally respect when people have no choice but to live in their cars due to unfortunate circumstance. They are definitely not playing and they are just trying to survive. Shadowfury. haha nah If I worked in the service industry I would have quit and found a similar job near the university I attended. The scenario is rather ironic. I worked as a math and science tutor at a nice community college downtown while attending a university up state. The job had a really nice pay rate plus I could work year round so money would always be coming in(even during the summer). It was definitely worth the hour commute plus I got to reaffirm my math skills. That's wonderful you are back in school. I have a classmate. The military has benefited so many people in my family. I would have considered it but I don't think I am cut out for it. What is your field of study?

Alex W. Agreed. Give graduated students with a degree some love. Tax credit at least. Not just a measly deduction. Fuckers in power bail out banks, but never students. Treachery.
@garyp4525

The bank "bail-outs" were loans which were paid back in full with interest. People with outstanding student loans (I used to be one) should be expected to pay back their loans as well, after all, they were the ones that chose to take out loans. The loans individuals take out for college is an investment in themselves, if it isn't paying off, and in many cases it isn't, then people should think twice about blowing $30k on a useless degree and consider being a plumber or one of the many other professions that pay well, but do not require a degree.

When driving straight through on a long journey, I have often pulled into a truck stop in an out-of-the-way area not used by truckers, locked my doors, let my seat back & took a nap for 30-60 minutes. When I woke up refreshed, I went into the store, used the restroom, then purchased a snack or soda & continued my journey. I have never encountered any problems, although anyone passing by could see into the car.

I'm actually in a hospital parking lot right now chilling in my car relaxing, I have two hours to waste and instead of driving all the way back home I come here a lot, and this is in the middle of the day. I feel comfortable to sit here and if I decide to take a nap I know I'm not going to be bothered. Most people coming and going from a hospital usually have other things on there mind then caring about someone in there car. :)

I work nights/early mornings. I go to a 24 hour gym. There's locations all over. One right near where I work in the morning. So, I'll cozy up there. However, ONCE in awhile someone will call the police and I'll get rolled up on. And usually there's no further issues and I go on my merry way.

Truck stops are awesome in many ways, but NOISY. The truckers run their engines all night, for AC or whatever, and they're always coming and going. But if noise doesn't bother you, then they're perfect.

I hear there is a separate area for cars and RVs.and truckers don't like you in their area. Just what I heard.

Olivia Hardin .. as a trucker, I'd have to agree. There are usually rather large car/rv areas to accommodate you. Parking on the truck side, even with a van, can be dangerous because you're so much smaller and we're looking for trucks.. not passenger vehicles. On a side note , when you need a shower, don't hesitate to ask a trucker if he has an extra shower on his rewards card he can give you. After we fuel so much, we get unlimited showers at most places, so some of us will help some people out. Just be respectful.. don't take the towels or cloths, etc. We'll get the charge back since it's linked to US on our card. I've helped a lot of people this way. It's all about respect !!! Give it.. get it.

Yes please don’t park in the truck parking places there is a truck parking shortage and we are on a government mandated clock . Park in the car side they will leave you alone . And yea I run my ac my fridge and microwave so my truck is on a lot of the time . As for crime in truck stops they are a lot safer than even ten years ago use common sense stay in lit areas don’t go in the dark between trucks and so on and you have little to worry about .

24hr gym parking lots have worked for me. I have a membership at a local gym that I pay only $10 a month. And another one is at work. I happen to work in a diesel shop so I just drive my car into their yard at night and drive out every morning before the other employees start arriving. Excellent video.

I don’t know how this came up on my recommendations, but 1 place I can recommend are 24hr fitness gyms. If you have a member ship you got shower, bathroom, sauna and you can get in on your early workouts. I use to live in my car and worked part time and it was to my convenience.
