2 Brummies attempt a Volvo 240 Axle Swap

Me and an old friend get to swapping out the Volvo 244 and 245 axles, contains bad language and general nonsense. I made a mistake at the end, i'm fitting poly bushes to the torque rods next, not trailing arms!

Is the rear axle from the 240 wagon compatible with the saloon?.

Yeah it's the same, the springs and anti roll bar are different though which I foolishly didn't realise until after 🙄

Nice dude! I’m currently replacing my bushing with poly from superpro on my 89 240 So far I’ve only knocked out the upper and lower control arm bushings.

The Volvo 140's had different axle ratio between salon and estates, manual and auto. I don't know if it was the same in the 240s or if they were all the same. I doubt it would make a difference either way. Nice work with the cars and videos 👍

Ah good to know, I need to take it on the autobahn and compare it but all I can see so far is it's a really nice ratio compared to the 940 wagon with the same M47 transmission, much better cruising rpm. And thanks I'm glad you're enjoying them 👍

The 245 axle is wider than the 244 axle. Also, there are 7 or 8 different axle ratios for the 1030-axle and two different wheels for your speed-sensor.... My ratio isn't available (new) anymore... 3,54:1

@@chrish9382 Are you sure ? I swapped a 244 axle into my 245 and didn't notice any difference in length. Both cars were automatics and I don't think there was any difference in the ratio either. These were American market cars.

I have never used the foot 🦶 apply method to twist loose right fasteners. Bravo 👏🏿 👏🏿 👏🏿. Also the springs from the wagon should be stiffer then the ones from the saloon. Is your helper a plumber by profession?

Thanks, yeah she's defo firmer, I think I might swap back if I can get some new retaining brackets, and manage to get the old ones off, with hand or foot power. He's an electrician but his bro is a plumber funnily enough, why? 😄

I can feel the struggle with some of those bolts from all the way over here! Looks like you guys did a killer job. .those bushings were trash! Does the new axle have a different ratio? I have a set of Poly bushes for my trailing arms ordered from IPD. There's a 2+ week delay unfortunately but I can't wait to finally get them replaced on my wagon!

I'm not sure if it has a different ratio, quite possibly but if anything it's improved, really nice cruising rpms which I much prefer considering the autobahn here. And good luck with it I hear it's definitely high on the list of shitty jobs to do on a 240 😅 Will you film it?

The different ratios were selected for each transmission. Wagons and sedans with the 5 speed manual had one ratio while sedans and wagons with the automatic had a different, slightly numerically higher ratio. Either way it is a Dana 30 and both ring and pinion sets are readily available new in both open and limited slip forms.

I once did an axle swap in 4 hours on my own outdoors with hand tools and a single trolley jack so I know what you went through.

You should exchange to the sedan springs. The car looks then much better as it should be.
