He also breaks down WHY things are happening the way they are, BECAUSE of the settings that were set, and HOW to adjust them yourself after the fact. I find it interesting that most of the adjustments to the Ohlins suspensions on these two bikes pretty much brought the rebound and compressions settings back to the OEM settings when the bikes were originally sold to the customers. Rear Rebound is 14 out, and Compression is 12 out. Front forks are set to 6 Rebound and 16 Compression. He decreased Compression by 1 click, and brought their front preloads a bit lower than stock (5 turns instead of 7), but, for the most part, nearly back to the OEM settings. The red bike must have just been horrible to ride, front preload set to max combined with nearly no rebound at all, front or rear.

Hello Dave, congrats on the 100k and thank you for this great free video! For the white Ducati my approach would have been to take out compression to get more travel out of the forks. I was surprised you took out more preload because in the beginning you said that the front was way too soft. I’m going to replicate these settings and fine tune it from here and I’m 210lb solid. My setup is so bad that I get bucked 2”-3” going over bumps so I have to squeeze the tank really hard. Thank you Dave and I’ll be contacting you here in the future for some more adjustments for my Supersport S!!!

I have a Yamaha YZF R6 2006 stock suspension, I have not found anyone who can adjust my suspesion properly , I did something myself and it is much better now , but still not properly setup. now i'm almost at the factory standards settings but a little changed to suit me , but still not good enough for me

Did you say that in colder weather, you need a lower cold tyre pressure and in summer you need a higher cold tyre pressure? I thought the idea would be to have a consistent “mid ride” pressure. The above instruction would result in much higher pressure on a simmer ride than on a winter one.

In Winter, cold dense air measures up to 3 psi less than a hot day. In effect, lowering to "cold pressures" in Summer is lowering the pressure in general.

@@catalystreactionsbw Ideal Gas Law - fixed mass of gas, pressure will increase as temperature increases. 34 psi on a summer morning “cold pressure test” will increase close to 40 psi by lunchtime on a ride. 34 psi on a winter morning “cold pressure test” will not be anywhere near as high, maybe 36-37. The goal is to have your tyres at the optimal pressure during a ride in any temperature. For this to happen, you need less pressure in your tyres in summer that you do in winter ( measured when the tyre is cold).

don't understand how is low tire pressure amplify bumps, walking speeds may be. when tire deforms on the imperfection, it can't come back to original form that fast, by this little delay tire is already rolled on and reforming patch of the tire is not at contact with the road so I beleive it can't effect the bike. otherwise soft carcass tires should be unfomfortable than hard ones but are they?

Great question. Fine tuning compression is an individual choice, so there is that consideration. It is also part of a testing regimen where some riders will want to define their settings.

This guy doing the teaching is so smart at what he does. he knows how everything effects everything with the suspension. but as a teacher he is to fast. he blurts out things so quickly, you do this and you do that and it will effect this and effect that. just turn that twice and and bring this up and it will effect this and that. and I feel like I can understand what he is saying while he is saying it, but remembering it is another story. and there is something about the way he says things that makes the guy who's listening want to say yes right right like he's getting it all. its like years of knowledge and experience he is supposed to get in a few minutes time, but the guy listening doesn't want to come off as stupid so he says yea yea right right. but as soon as he drives away he's probably thinking now what do I do. because the information came at him so fast that he was just overwhelmed by it all. but he was to intimidated to say slow down and say that again. and he's going to look at his phone and think ok what is it I'm supposed to do now. you can tell the guy who's bike it is was overwhelmed. but he was to intimidated to go over the information enough times until he actual got it clear in his mind. so he just said yea yea right right. because the guy doing the teaching teaches in a little bit of a condescending way. making the guy feel stupid if he doesn't get it right away.

Maybe so, but I’m sure Dave would be happy to clarify if asked. He insists on careful adjustment and testing, not just applying wizardry, and to save and share protocols with other riders (and why). My bike's forks only have the preload and rebound. What is the difference compared to those with forks having just rebound and compression, and forks with preload and compression. Do these fork adjustments hint anything on what kind of springs are being used on the forks?

Preload and rebound are the important settings so you can control the fork. Compression can be managed with oil viscosity and height/volume. Compression is nice to have so you can adjust bump compliance.

Compression not addressed? I will try these settings and report back if anyone is interested. 2018 SuperSport S (2nd Owner). I'm 6' 200lbs, so the gentleman in the video was much lighter at 145lbs. Heavier rider = more preload. Not sure which direction to bias for heavier people, absolute amateur here.

Does the front tire really run the correct direction? To me it seems the profile should turn the other way around. 🤔

Some tires do look confusing with tread patterns, but the arrow tells the story of the direction it must go. The front has to be the bow and "part the waters so the rear has less to deal with. That type of perspective can help see why there is a difference.

Dave, on that white Supersport front tyre it was the trailing edge of the tyre tread that was worn yet you suggested rebound was too little. Everything I've seen from you until now has said that rebound is too little if the Leading edge is worn as with the rear tyre on this bike. Can you clarify please, is it the leading or trailing edge or possible either? Thanks

Thanks for the comment. As the rear was creating a massive load on the front tire via weight transfer, that load transfer "squished" the front tire and released it. As such the weight transfer not the damping, loaded the tire. If the tire is subject to load transfer over damping then wear needs to be considered in the big picture vs a microcosm. Yes, leading edge worn = rebound too fast.

I would think that by now semi active suspension with a good onboard computer should take all the work off the rider....With ample sensors on the bike to measure what is going on? The computer could even suggest preload settings....man I just do not want to "learn" suspension tuning! I want to pay extra money and have the BIKE adjust things! Like it does for fueling ya know? You USED to have know a lot about jetting all the throttle phases and with elevation changes or various other changes it could be a total complete PITA! But nowadays? Easy peasy lemon squeezy the comptuer does it all! So why not suspension too! My Yamaha has semiactive suspension and while Idk it is ideal or even close to it it does at least seem okay....only reason I question what is going on is the front tread is scalloping or whatever the right term is and I am lost as to why? Tire pressure? preload? idk

The scalloping is rebound being too fast and that is a fault of the coding in the computer. You can change fork oil to a heavier viscosity as that is far cheaper than and ECU hack and fix. You can try another 3psi in the front and test that as a stand alone.
