Motorcyclist staffer Zack Courts is always arriving to office after his commute with a bunch of opinions about the bike he’s riding. Too much this, not enough that, and occasionally has some decent insights. We thought some of it might help consumers or entertain enthusiasts, so we strapped a camera and microphone to the side of his helmet and told him to turn it on when he leaves his house. A lot of him talking in his helmet is complaining about drivers, yelling at red lights, and wondering why billboards aren’t more expensive. But sometimes he actually talks about the bike, and those are the parts we keep. Got a bike you would like to see discussed? Let us know and we’ll send him home on that one next.

It's no secret we're always trying to get our staff to work a little harder. Especially the ones that always seem to have too much to say. "Write it down!" we always shout at each other. Zack Courts is a classic case, always arriving to office after his commute with a bunch of opinions about the bike he's riding. Too much this, not enough that, and occasionally has some decent insights that we thought might help consumers or entertain enthusiasts. So we strapped a camera and microphone to the side of his helmet and told him to turn it on when he leaves his house. This time, we sent him to Spain for the launch of this new SuperSport from Ducati. First, a flying lap of the Monteblanco Circuit and then a cruise through the Spanish hills just outside Sevilla. Rough life, Zack...

So much hate towards this bike for absolutely no reason. It is NOT a panigale. Its a relaxed, street oriented street bike with relaxed ergos and clip ons that won't break your wrists after 20 min of riding. People have been asking for a bike like this for years. Not everyone wants a 200hp street missle. Is it overpriced? Yes. But is there a demand for it? Hell yes there is. On to the looks. Again, its NOT a panigale. Is the windshield awkward? A little bit, but i love how the bike looks in pictures. I will reserve any judgement on its looks when I see it in person. Go out and ride the thing before you call it a ninja 300 like an idiot.

Still trying to figure out how the bike is overpriced..
@spenspuma

Texarmageddon The price is its biggest fault. it's Panigale money for a bike that is nowhere near a Panigale. huge mistake from ducati. I wanted one but am not prepared to pay £13k for one when I can get a Panigale for £14k... the SS is a compromise on a Panigale...but at the same price???? Ducati could have had a massive winner with this bike but theyve killed it with the pricing.
@Texarmageddon
@Texarmageddon 7 жыл бұрын
With all due respect it's not a Panigale, it's a sport Touring bike. A bike that will get large Touring aftermarket support where as the Panigale or Any supersport/Naked bike will NEVER get. Also, are you guys even aware of what a NEW 959 Panigale cost? A brand new CURRENT YEAR Panigale 959 here in the US is 15, 695. This is Before OTD taxes etc. You can get into a VFR800 for $10,799 Brand New before OTD taxes. These are heavily Discounted now as they didn't sell. You can get into a Ninja1000 for $12,199 Brand New Before OTD taxes. You can get into a GSXS1000F for $ 10, 999 Brand New Before OTD taxes. You can get into a FJ-09 for $10,699 or an FJR1300 for $16, 390 Brand new before OTD taxes. You can get a Turismo Veloce 800 for $15, 998 or you can get Stradale 800 for $14,598 You can get a BMW 1200RS for $14,995 , K1300S at $ 15,995 , F800GT for $12,095, and for shits and giggles I'll even throw in the R1200RT which is $ 18,145. Lastly, you can get a KTM 1290 SuperDuke GT for $19,999... So there you have it... When you compare the Supersport price with all the sport touring bikes.. $12,995 isn't exactly expensive in this market... Especially since the ONLY bike worth a damn in the sport touring segment that is cheaper is the GSXS1000f.. It's not a full fledge sport bike neither is it a full fledge touring bike... That's what makes sport touring a great class.. cause you can get a bike that leans to one side or the other, but still won't be as aggressive as a supersport/

Texarmageddon I'm well aware of the price of both as I have a test ride on both at my local Ducati in 2 weeks time where I will ordering one of them there and then. Currently in the UK the Panigale is around £800 dearer than the Supersport S...and granted I haven't ridden them both yet, but I have sat on both and I immediately noticed the SS has a lot cheaper feel to it...the Panigale feels a lot better put together and strangely looks like better quality parts. I really really wanted the SS as it's perfect for what I want a bike for...but in the back of my head I can't stop thinking..'only £800 more and I can have a Panigale'.....this bike SHOULD have been released at around £3000 cheaper than the Panigale and not £800. Ducati have seriously dropped the ball on this model regarding the price. Nobody can justify having the SS when the Panigale is only a fraction dearer
@Texarmageddon
@Texarmageddon 7 жыл бұрын
So you want a bike that comes with Ohlins Suspension to be priced at 12k with 113hp & 70 ft lbs of torque, Adjustable windscreen, 463lbs, every electronic Aid Common to most bikes, Anti-Theft, and SSSA... I don't know what to tell you guy...but anyone who knows about the supersport.. they aren't looking at the Panigale anyway.... LOL

One of the better reviews I've seen on this new machine. I think for an older rider this makes the cut for consideration. Having ridden the Monster my questions would be the heat thrown off by the motor and cooling fan.....and the quick shifter, how'd you like it?

Great review as always, and an interesting bike. It looks cool (especially with the single sided swing), sounds very Ducati-ish, and seems like a great alternative to a sports naked, like the Monster. I like the price point (both models) as well--slightly overlapping the 959 while offering a more relaxed ride. Good stuff!

So basically Ducati has built a Honda VFR with better electronics and a bit more power. I had a 2004 VFR and now have a 2015 VFR. It always made me wonder why it seemed so few people got the concept of the VFR, and now Ducati has built this. I hope the SuperSport sells well. I think we need more bikes like this.

Really liking this one. Finally a decent looking sport touring bike that doesn't look overly goofy amd has a more laid back riding position with clip on bars versus straight bars. I like the S version in white best but prefer the price tag of the base model with a seat cowl and quick shifter. This one is on my radar for the future.

just bought one 2018 mod, i couldn't agree more with this review 🙂 Mines a Supersport with quickshifter and termignoni exhaust fitted afterwards by ducati dealership in norway It sounds amazing and for a newbie like me its really nice to have one of the easiest bikes ever, ive driven bullets, mopeds, yamaha mt07 and its easier to handle than honda cbr 250 indian version which i drove alot in india! blew my mind! love the windscreen, good seating for 2 and you can easily turn the backseat into storage with aftermarket bags. The best is the looks, if you havent seen one in real life, dont even dare judge it ! its a beauty in red with black accessory!

Glad someone else is making a good sport tourer. To me, they are the most versatile and sensible bike for a lot of riders: those who ride road, maybe commutes, long distance tours, and wants to carve twisties and do it well. These days there aren't too many options.
@ilmostro16
@ilmostro16 7 жыл бұрын
Would you say the half fairings and windscreen offer a considerable/noticeable improvement in wind and buffeting reduction over a fully naked Monster for instance? In the video, you didn't sound completely convinced in the windscreens efficacy. If I were to choose between a new Monster 1200S and a Supersport S, one of my main decision factors would be wind control. I could sacrifice the M1200's extra power if the fairings and windscreen on the SS make a considerable difference, but not if the difference is marginal.

Bravo Zack. I enjoyed the video. I wish I had a GoPro on my adventure. I was watching your video laughing because most of what you said about the Supersport in real time riding was what I was saying to myself. Full disclosure I sell Ducati, BMW, etc. My adventure was in South Sardinia, Italy. For those of us who ride sport bikes like panigales , s1000rr, R1, ZX10-R, etc, will enjoy this bike for the sport edge of the bike coupled with comfort. For the road the power was plenty. Price point especially for the S model is great. As Zack mentioned in the video the quick shifter up/down was fantastic, along with ohlins suspension superb, even better. My S also had the low mount akrapovic which sounded, as you can guess, wonderful! Again great video Zack! Now you have a similar opinion from a humble salesman. Definitely put it on your shopping list if you like sport coupled with comfort.

Great review - thanks. I'd consider getting one as I'm at that age where getting on a full on supersports bike is neither practical or useful to me. When the sun shines I want to go distances and a supersport just doesn't do it for me any more, even though I still like the looks of them. Thumbs up to Ducati from me then. Really though I'd have to put it up against the Ninja 2017 1000 SX or similar before deciding.

I want the 2017 or 2018 Ducati Supersport S to be my next bike in arctic white.I think it will be out for 2-3 years and than they will stop making it and it will become collectible.I think it's the best bike for the street Ducati has ever made.Ohlins fork and rear shock.Ducati up/down quick shifter.Relaxed comfortable ride that has enough HP and Torque for everything you will encounter.IF i buy this bike.It will be the last motorcycle I ever own for the next 3-4 years and than we will look at the market again.My best friend was drooling over that I might purchase this machine.As he is a old sport bike rider who now has a huge overweight cruiser with floor boards that he tries to keep up in the canyon windy roads.It's crazy.

The Blackbird is my idea of a perfect bike. Docile at low speed and insane when you wind it up , handles like it’s on rails but heavy and a bit scrunched up even with bar risers, The Ducati is light and flickable, has loads of torque and on normal roads will give any super bike a run for it’s money. It’s not slow at all and is loads of fun. The handling is superb.

I've been looking for a replacement for my 20 year old Ducati ST2. I didn't think there was anything like it anymore. The ST2 is a small, simple and light weight sport tourer with a slightly hard edge (sporty riding position) to it. I can put the bags on it, ride it comfortably 500 or 1000 miles to get to the twisties, and then when I get there, I'm on a great looking, sporty bike that doesn't compromise the sport riding. This SuperSport is an ST2 20 years later. I'm probably going to sell my 848EVO (too fast and uncomfortable) and my ST2 (getting old) and get one of these.

Spot on for the street. But, I could just get a CBR650F used for 5500. DUC is better for track days though. It's a Ducati so you get the cool factor and going to dealers on weekends is fun. I really like the motor and riding position. Like my old VFR, something you can ride and ride and ride.

i like this bike, an SV1000 very close specs and nice looking, and the maintenance shedule is a jewel... but damn it's costly, you can get an MT 10 for that price, even cheaper

Nice bike! but it feels like it shake a lot on the track (just seeing the handlebars, or is it the track's impurities?). thinking about steering dampers ^^

Well that part is obvious, but in other places it shakes too, look from 1:50, the whole right corner and look at the handlebars

Probably the only Ducati I'd buy right now on principle, would be the new Monster 797 or a used 821. Both have the least oversquare engine Ducati sells and should be more entertaining to flog around the streets. That 803cc 2-valve engine is the last lump they make that sounds tough with a proper exhaust. The LC 4-valve motors have seemed to soften the whump.

I have yet to stumble upon a review on this bike that compares it to its closest competitor, Monster 821! Could you please point that out? Especially handing, and dimensions while you're riding it.

Monster 821 is not even it's closest competitor if at all... It's competitors are VFR800 GSX1000F Ninja1000 Veloce800 SuperDukeGT FJ09 FJR1300 F800GT R1200RS K1300S Stradale800 Anything outside of those bikes are not even in the same market guy. The bikes I named are all sport touring bikes.

+Texarmageddon I understand you completely, but the bike is based on a Monster's frame and pays a lot of resemblance to it. The fairing and higher clip-ons dont really mean its a dedicated sports touring bike. Thanks for your response :)

It’s a Ducati, has to be flame red. I’d get the deluxe version for the OHLINS. It’s the sort of sport/road bike I’d own to go up and down a road like that sun-up to lunch - then again on the way home. Fuel tank is a bit small for touring . The bike has soul. That makes up for imperfections like the rubbish mirrors.

I test drove this bike a few weeks ago and it's a blast. It handles better than most sport-touring bikes, it's got all the power you could ever want on the street, and it's ridiculously comfortable and confidence-inspiring. Anyone who is shit-talking this bike is a squid. That said, I hate the name. I don't care that it's based on a previous bike. Supersport means something else, and it's exactly the opposite of what Ducati wants to market this bike as.

@@reinterpret_cast Well it vibrates more than your typical Japanese 4, but it's really not bad.

Got my S, first Ducati. This bike is absolutely perfect for the street. I like most got an absolutely monster of a liter bike, never used the potential, numb ass, uncomfortable...but I was cool?🤨 150 miles per tank (ish) depends on you wrist. I’m getting old and this bike let’s me play and be comfy, by the time it’s time to fuel up, you get to stretch...perfect timing. Ducs are expensive to maintain do your research! If you can swing it, don’t hesitate. If not, save up, just worth it! If your young and have the need to hit Mach 10, get the r1 and learn the hard way, I will see you in a few years on a sports tour (ish) we’ve all been there. Stay safe all!
