The song is about falling in love with a married man and all the deceit and lies that entails. She mentions the small things he leaves at her home and "I don't care what number I am". The rock version is sang with bitterness and resentment, like an argument, while the acoustic is sang with heartbreak and despair. In my humble opinion it's a masterpiece of composition and execution. Kanami tends to compose songs on piano initially, so stripping the full song down back to the acoustic would of been natural to her.

The Puzzle/Anemone acoustic from Zepp 2018 had become somewhat legendary in Band Maid fan circles. There isn't an official MV or live video of Anemone, but they have been performing it again more recently. You can always check out the album version as well. They actually did Anemone acoustic with Saiki and Kanami again at the Yokohama 10 year anniversary show. As for which came first, in this case and most cases with their acoustic versions, the band version came first, and when the decide to do something special, Kanami will rearrange the songs and they get to work learning the song again! There are a few official videos from their Christmas acoustic concert that are all fantastic as well.

Ah! Puzzle!! Smart move doing both as a single reaction, I must say! For the Official Live version (more than most of their other songs IMHO), you really need to hear the song 6 times, and on different listens concentrate individually on the following (in no particular order) :- a) (Edit) Kanami's (end edit) Lead guitar b) Miku's Rhythm guitar (this is the song I will show anyone if said person dares to argue about Miku's skills as a rhythm guitarist). c) MISA's Bass guitar d) Akane's Drums e) Saiki and Miku's vocals f) Overall If you really do that, you will realize how brilliant the song is really structured (and how damn skillful everyone seriously is). Truly amazing. Then there is the acoustic version..... Kanami demonstrates that this song is equally effective as an solo acoustic piece. All she needs to make this top-tier is her beloved Saiki, who proceeds to play her part well and tug at our emotional heartstrings. Kanami backing Saiki up with her angelic voice is amazingly brilliant and makes this song heart-breaking when you read the lyrics while listening. One would think they were playing a totally new song the way this went. Band-Maid are nothing short of brilliant.

To me Band Maid perfectly exemplifies something that Andy Edwards (prog-rock drummer & KZbinr) recently said. To paraphrase he said that, contrary to what people always say, music is objective, not subjective. I wrote this awhile back about "Puzzle." "Puzzle," is a song sung by a woman who has fallen completely in love with a cheating husband who will never leave his wife for her. She knows this love will destroy her, that she will never be happy again, but she can't stop loving him. The electric version is sung with bitterness about her situation. In the acoustic same song, same words, different arrangment. This version is full of sadness, regret, longing, desperation. It's heartbreaking and heartbreakingly beautiful. Even not understanding the words by the end you just want to comfort Saiki and tell her you'll do anything to make her feel better.

What disappoints me with this version is that is the music box intro was cut. Though you briefly heard it at the beginning, the music box intro is actually 1:23 long. I'm guessing part of the reason was so they could set up for the acoustic songs that followed, but I believe there was another reason. We all know that any version of Puzzle is about the heartbreak of a women in love with a man she will never have (likely married). Already aware of that when I first heard the acoustic version, with the extended music box intro, I envisioned a grown woman laying on her bed, dressed up with nowhere to go, looking at the little ballerina spin around in the pink jewelry box, she's had ever since her early childhood, as the music box played. Probably something she was always fascinated with as a child and brought her so much happiness as she dreamed that she was the ballerina. At the end of the intro, the music box slowly comes to a stop, as does the spinning ballerina. She is again reminded that being the ballerina was just a childhood dream. A dream just like her hopes of being with this man forever. Everytime I hear the extended music box intro, I seem to always get something in my eyes, even before Kanami strums the guitar for the first time.

I rate Kanami's compositional skill very highly (sorry, Mozart, but the 18th century was ages ago...and I do prefer her scores for quintets and quartets) and these two performances are a fine example of her genius. First she writes PUZZLE and then adapts its driving energy into an emotional, subtle blend of guitar and voices - and Kanami's vocal harmonies are outstanding against Saiki's moving main vocals. It's just coming up to the 3rd anniversary of the streaming of their acoustic set (on xmas day 2021), where Kanami took 14 songs and adapted them for acoustic, creating pieces for all the band to play together as well as for various combinations of trios and duos. There are 2 songs from it available on their YT channel - CATHARSIS, with all the band performing, and the incredible performance of SAYONAKIDORI by Miku on guitar and vocals, MISA on electric bass and Akane on drums - and vocal harmonies! PS SAYONAKIDORI is my favourite Japanese word, meaning 'Nightingale' but translating, very beautifully, as SA (small) YO (dawn/night) NAKI (singing) DORI (bird).

The only Puzzle is why such an awesome band as BAND-MAID still haven't dominated the world yet. Justin Bieber has 74M subs so that's 74M idiots accounted for.😂

Am I the only one who's never heard him?

@@jjo154 You must have heard his dreaded name at some point? I'm in the club of not knowing a single song by him.🤷♂️

Ah! A non-Belieber I see!! He's not all that bad you know. He's just not going to make it in my top ten list anytime soon.

@@RahimRahmat Lol. I like that. I would wear a t-shirt with "I'm a non Belieber" on it with pride.😁

You do what you want, it's your channel. Personally I always enjoy the MV then Live dynamic when its done. We've heard all these songs multiple time already and are here to join you on your ride after all.

Good point well made.

You need to go to one of the Asian platforms such as "billi-billi" and react to the whole concert from Zepp Tokyo 2018!!! the same way you do The Warning now))) that's an epic live performance, and I promise you - you will be mesmerized. The Brobdingnagian chandelier they put on the stage))) awesome)))) Other than that, Puzzle is their most progressive song, and it is my favorite one. I know opinions vary, but quite frankly, I don't care how much awesomeness they can bring - Puzzle still remains my song)))

Yeah, I'll have to look into that.

Trivia: Kanami don't like to sing. When she was playing solo before Band-Maid, she decided that as a songwriter, she had to learn how to sing properly ... so she did. But she only sing when she really has to (despite having a wonderful and sweet voice) ... or if it's for Saiki 😉. Next acoustic reaction should be the other half of the band ... so Sayonakidori acoustic!

Another great song they did during that same show was " Anemone". Just like "Puzzle" both versions sound completely different. Would be another great 2 for 1 vid.

On your own, you just reacted to the perfect Band Maid double feature. Usually, someone has to recommend this pair, but it seems you were compelled by the Maid Magic 🪄 ❤ The documentaries may seem like a longer time investment now, but I guarantee you will come to the end of each episode with, “it’s over already?”
