I own one now for 4+ years. Used several times as a bivvy or in the hammock for that force multiplier in comfort. In or around 40 deg f it's perfect with your seasonal clothes and or a woobie or wool blanket. for the weight and size I can fully recommend Go2systems Trifecta. You really should EDC one of these in your vehicle along with a poncho and liner for a reliable 3 season lightweight shelter system.

I understand what GruntProof is trying to illustrate (he comes from a military perspective as I do, and we are used to heavy, super durable gear). But he misses the point with this in that it is ultra-light and has reflectivity that will hide you from thermal and keep you warmer than a normal bivy. These are serious advantages over a standard bivy/tarp and worth carrying some duct tape for emergency repairs to be able to use it hard in the field.

That's why I love this channel. I'm hard on stuff. I don't baby anything. It has to be durable to stand up to what I'm going to do with and to it or my money is wasted. Thanks for letting us know about this one. Semper Fi.

I've used mine for almost 2 years, off and on. I dont leave mine flopping in the wind and only rarely use it as a canopy. I Dont believe that lean-to's amount to a hoot as shelter. I go with an Aframe , very low to the ground, normally, and yes, always with some sort of elastic hookup when it's not wrapped around me as clothing, worn as a poncho or used as a bivy. People sure seem to expect a lot from 1.5 lbs of material! I only ask it to do a bit more than sheet plastic and it's never disappointed me yet. :-) Mainly, it lets out body moisture while keeping condensation away from me. I mainly use it in a net hammock, with a ridgeline holding the bivy away from my body. I almost always envelope the bivy in a couple of taped-together 55 gallon drum liners The "envelope" stops rain and wind very well, but condensation builds up inside of it. The combo of the hammock and the bivy keep that moisture off of me, if I see to it that the bivy doesnt touch me.

the material is exactly the same as is used for the SOL Escape Bivy. I use mine for years now, I don't baby it, I just don't try to tear it apart. It's been a life saver when a night in my jungle bag turned out to be -5°C instead of the expected +5 It's one of my favorite pieces of gear, and once I use it up I will get a new one. SOL says it's for emergencies and not for regular use. I use mine regularely. So it's actually better than what I expected. Not grunt proof, but good enough. Since it's only a bivy and not a tarp, all it has to endure is my farts. It can cope with them ;-) The only downside of the SOL Escape is it's size, it's made for Chinese guys and little couchcampers. Normal guys want the bigger 2-go Systems Trifecta. the breathable tyvek with aluminum on one side is available as packing material from the roll, so for people who can use glue it's very affordable compared to the finished product.

wind blows thru it pretty easily, and water will penetrate it if you let it pool on the water. With a plastic "envelope' around it, and, a hammock and ridgeline thru the bivy and another rideline holding the envelope away from the bivy and the bivy not touching you, it works really well. Yes, I DO get condensation on the inside of he envelope, but the tyvek, the hammock and ridgelines mean that it doesn't touch me. Sleeping ok at 40F out in the rain and wind, in just cammies, is pretty amazing for just 3 lbs of gear, with one lb of that being the hammock. I use two packs, so that I can stuff them with debris and use them as sleeping pads.

My favorite product from 2gosystems is the VELAR UL BIVVY ; works very well to protect against mosquitoes and ticks both on the ground and in a hammock. If you want something like the trifecta but grunt proof, look at the jerven bag.

amazon sells full body bugnet "suits". I wear two sets of them and sleep soundly, knowing that I'm safe from spiders, centipedes, ticks. Put SMOKED debris between two such suits and wear the assembly as longjohns and gain 10F degrees more warmth.. Wrap your limbs (outside of your cammies) with debris under the wraps, and gain 10F degrees more. My kevlar vest and groin protector add that much warmth to my torso. So I can handle sleeping ok at 20F degrees in a hammock, with just cammies. and wiggies net longjohns, this bivy. and its plastic "envelope". Add a lb of polypro longjohns and I can sleep ok at 10F. Add hot rocks or hot water bottles, gain 10F more degrees, for 2-3 hours. Add a LOT of dry debris between the bivy and the envelope, gain 10F more degrees. Once you get below 10F degrees, hostilities nearly cease, especially at night, cause such cold is so hard on batteries. There goes your radio, your night vision, even the electronic sight on your rifle. That means that you can "aim" the one way reflected heat of a Siberian fire lay at the 3x4 ft oval of clear PEVA shower-curtain that's taped over the open end of the bivy. The Siberian fire lay has almost no popping embers, and projects its heat twice as far as a normal fire. 3 ft away, up 6" high in the net hammock, I need not worry about holes being burned in my bivy. Here's a vid about the Siberian kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpfIXoZqZdN0nas kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5qpeYFvoriZopI

I have found a 1/2 dozen reflective tarps for half the price that just by adding a few snaps you would have a better system that would last and have better functionality !!......... I made one with a 10x10 tarp and it covers all bases in all 4 seasons !.......... (I used a Bearhard Tarp......and bought a snap/grommet kit from harbor frieght..... my total under 50 bucks !! )

Hmmm, interesting because I've been using mine as a bivy for two seasons and still holding up just fine... (few holes from sparks, which are patched with gorilla tape but that's it). I wouldn't use it as a tarp though, for that I use my Aquaquest. But this, with wool blanket inside, on top of a light ground SOL ground sheet has been fine on the forest floor all year round. It's part of my 'always' kit. I actually upgraded to the ARC bivy by 2GOSystems, which is just a dedicated bivy with bug net.

I’ve had mine for years & it’s done what it is supposed to do! I don’t abuse my equipment. I found that ANY item will fail if the user intentionally abuses it. So I’m not impressed by “ grunt-proof” testing. In the real world survival situation if you take care of your equipment & resources they will take care of you.

If you can baby it, fine. As an emergency item, also fine. Weight seems okay for what it is. I generally shock cord my timeouts anyway. Truth being told, unless I'm really concerned about the weight I'd stick with my Jerven bag. Pricier and heavier for similar sizes but bullet proof.

Great point. That's what I do. I have the SOL Bivy and the 2GoSystems and a bit of duct tape will keep them going for a long time in the field. The trade off is worth it because of the lighter weight and reflectivity compared to a plain nylon or Goretex bivy.

Does any grunts out there have any advice on how to wash/clean an old school canvas military poncho . I recently acquired an original 1977 warsaw pact un-issued but it has a strong musky storage smell . So how can I clean it but still keep it waterproof ? .

If you’re talking about the plash palatka type canvas poncho you can put it in the washing machine with nikwax treatment. That’ll clean it and also treat it to be water resistant.

As a non-American I always laugh when I here Americans say "It's made in the US so that's a bonus" or "It's made in the US so you know its quality" because I've had stuff made in China that has been far better quality than anything I've ever owned from the US. US made does not mean quality but it does mean you're being charged far more than the same product from China!
