2 Golden Rules of Mastering EQ

When mastering, two golden rules to follow are using narrow cuts and broad boosts in your EQ settings. This approach is significant for a few reasons.
Firstly, narrow cuts allow you to surgically remove problematic frequencies without affecting the rest of the mix.
This precision is crucial in mastering, where the goal is to enhance the overall sound without drastically altering the mix’s balance.
On the other hand, broad boosts help to gently enhance desirable frequencies.
The broad nature of these boosts means they’re less likely to cause harshness or unnatural tonal shifts, making them ideal for the subtle enhancements needed in mastering.
This approach differs from mixing, where you might use more aggressive EQ settings to sculpt individual elements of a track. In mastering, the focus is on the final, overall sound, so subtlety and precision are key.
For example, you might make a narrow cut around 3 kHz to remove some harshness from a vocal, while applying a broad boost around 100 Hz to give the bass a bit of warmth.
The narrow cut ensures the vocal remains clear and natural-sounding, while the broad boost adds richness to the bass without making it sound boomy or muddy.

yeah if you have a good reason to do something abnormal do it, but you were going to anyway (hopefully). if someone doesn't know how to make something that sounds good, then telling them there's no rules doesn't help lol

i can see some sense in not boosting narrow stereo files, but cutting wide is totally ok sometimes

If you need to make such a cut in mastering there is a problem with the mix.

Narrow cuts remove specific unwanted sounds without changing much else, keeping the music’s natural quality. Broad boosts gently improve the overall sound, making it warm and bright but still natural. This method keeps the music true to its original form while enhancing it.
