To those curious, this famous battle is called "Ofira Air Battle", where 2 Israeli Phantom fighter jets went up against 20 MiG-17's and 8 MiG-21's on Egypt's side. The heroic battle lasted just under 6 minutes during which 7 Egyptian planes were shot down. The remaining 21 Egyptian planes retreated quickly and Egypt has denied this battle ever occured, although they never provided their version of what happened.

I was Marine Air from '75 to '79. We did the first cruise on the Nimitz in '76 during the height of the Cold War. Our F-4J pilots could pinpoint bomb (close air support) better than even the A-7's and A-6's (purpose built attack aircraft) These guy's (VMFA-333 and VF-74) were the best of the best. After the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty we (U.S.A) began joint training exercises with and in Egypt. I was part of the one in 1981. They were still flying MiGs so being Air Force we were curious about the capabilities, how easy or difficult it is to operate etc. They chose a major who was one of the initial Egyptian pilots the Soviets trained. His briefing started like this: After months of right seat training the senior student pilot said to the lead instructor “You taught us how to take off, how to attack ground targets, how to bomb, targets, how to use missels for air to air combat, how to use the cannons but you haven’t taught us how to land.” The instructor replied “Don’t worry the Israelis will take care of that for you.”

You should do a video talking about Operation Mole Cricket 19. A air battle between Israel and Syria that happened on June 9th 1982 during the Lebanon war. 90 Israeli vs 100 Syrian aircraft. The fight resulted in only 2 damaged aircraft for Israel and shot down about 86 Syrian jets. It is considered to be the biggest Air Battle since the Korean War and one of the largest Air battles since WorldWar2. Very interesting and impressive battle.

That is, if Egypt had won the Yom Kippur War they would have already controlled the Sinai Peninsula and not have had to have waited until Israel gave up the Sinai nine years later. Moreover, Egypt's Sixth Army was cut off in the Sinai desert, and Israeli forces were only about 60 miles from Cairo when Egyptian President Anwar Sadat begged the Soviet Premier to intervene and arrange an immediate ceasefire with Israel. They were also noticed by the Egyptians and chased by Mig-21s that were there to provide air cover for the Mig-17s and Sukhois doing the actual bombing of the airfields. About half of that fight was the Phantoms running away after takeoff, just to gain enough separation from their pursuing Mig-21 bandits. The Phantoms utilized both sidewinders and sparrows to shoot down whatever they could. It wasn’t exclusively sidewinders being utilized.

The F4 is living proof of the adage that if you put big enough engines on it even a brick will go supersonic. There is extraordinary footage of an F4 getting a soft shot off a carrier that I believe is the Nimitz - please correct me if you know for sure - the deck crew race forward when the aircraft disappears over the bow but a moment later two huge rooster tails of water rise up into camera shot and the F4 appears waffling along in ground effect slowly picking up speed before abruptly going into a steep climb and disappearing.

@@ahmedAli-ok7gz Oh quite simple. I think the photograph was by the Daily Telegraph who later on published a photo of the latest Russian tank inside the turret. I was an ECE and worked and was trained on tanks and guns. The photos were studied closely under magnification so we knew what we were dealing with and if any modifications had been made. We could see none and you must remember in those days you needed to be very clever to modify a photo. Electronics was very expensive. I recently threw away a scientific calculator I purchased at the time for nearly £60 which was more than many people earned on a week. I had to be careful not to be seen using it as we were expected to take slide rules to the battlefield as we were told ‘no shops with batteries’! You must also remember that much Russian equipment was valve operated with good reason because it would withstand magnetic pulses well from nuclear strike. There was no expectation of holding the Russian and Warsaw Pact for a long period but we knew we could make it so expensive to overrun us a peace would be negotiated before erasure was managed. Fine by us we had good kit. So there you have it from one of many soldiers who were happy to wear uniform. Don’t knock us, we were their and ready.
