Learned something new!! I always assumed vector was just a "style" of drawing known for simplicity... but this is an eye opener (and has explained a common headache of mine as to why my pixel art blurs with increased size!)

One of the really cool things about old flash animations (.swf) is that they are vector animations, which means they can be rerendered in modern high resolution. There are animations as old as the late 90s which can today be rasterized and uploaded to KZbin in perfectly crisp 4K resolution, even though back then people were watching them on 480p CRTs. It's a lot like the digital equivalent of analog film. Pretty cool stuff. I have many old swf files saved on my computer and even though they're decades old, they look great today!

Thank you for this information. I was always confused on why some images I have on my PC from some Art I downloaded had extremely unfamiliar file extensions because I always thought that only .JPG .PNG . GIF. WEBP. and PDF. only existed as file extensions for images.

I make use of vectors all the time on my art, even though I technically only draw raster. I do my sketches in MSPaint (yes, that Paint) then I send the sketch over to Corel DRAW where I draw the final linearts over the sketch using vectors and then I export them as transparent PNGs and finish up everything else (coloring, shading, effects, etc.) in Photoshop. Drawing vectors is a very time consuming process and the whole sequence (Paint > Corel > Photoshop) is not straight-forward (I'd even say it's kinda cumbersome) but having the linearts vectorized is wonderful. I can draw a sketch at a small size/resolution and still get extremely high resolutions with high quality lines by simply choosing the right thickness of my lines and export resolution. It gives me a high resolution final product and makes it way easier to paint and shade it. Those great results and how time-consuming drawing vectors is are the reasons why I always say that I have a love/hate relationship with vectors. I love the results, but am not too fond of how long it takes to get there. It is worth it in the end, though.

I use Krita for both vector and raster, if you get it through the official webiste then it's free in case you're not srue which art style you prefer (Krita also supports animation if you also want to see the difference in animation). Actually if you want to edit text in Krita, you have to use vector, but the other vector tools like the shapes can also be used on raster layers.

Meanwhile, GIMP is ... weird. It's raster by nature, but you can import vector files (rasterizing them in the process). Paths are vector objects but don't occupy image space in and of themselves, and text is technically vector (because fonts) but is always _always_ rasterized, which causes problems if you want to apply transforms to text. (Fun fact - apparently Krita began as a fork of GIMP)

newly started drawing with a bit of vector in clip studio paint. i can draw with all my brushes in vector and it's no less time consuming than regular, makes it weird to erase and coloring is a pain but otherwise it's great. i was scared of vector because of seeing all the lines and dots and reajustings people made, but knowing i can draw fairly normally in CSP makes me actually like it and enjoy the process. and it's so nice to have line art i can scale without worrying about rouge pixels or blurryness. especially since i use textured brushes most of the time.

And there are also software like CSP, where you can draw in vector for easy modification but in most cases still export in raster. Also, usually you don't have to draw in vector, because it's always a good practice to draw raster in a pretty high resolution. And usually if something is good enough for print, it will be good enough for display. The only case where you have to investigate in vector is if you need to produce design for die cutting or laser etching.

When I started doing digital art, I actually started with vector!

The thing is, and this is what I've done with some of my drawings, was then when I re-scaled something, I end up re-drawing a part of that in the new scaling on a different layer (or copying/pasting the original group layer folder/duplicating the layer folder I have) and re-draw every part I have from scratch, just to make it look 4k, as well as having the resolution go from 500 or the default size when it came to 1080p, to now having it over 1000 resolution to make it easy for people to zoom in soo dang much. So I think seeing this, I might end up increasing the resolution size to about 1500 or 2000, just so that you can see the crisp pixels if necessary. But yes, things drawn as rastors do need to be re-drawn for them to look nice (and not that many artists are willing to re-trace the original lines that artists drew before back in the day).

The Raster issue is also dependant on your artstyle I personaly tend to use high quality and contrasting lines, which have an easy time getting upscaled by ai ^^

I love blur, and raster art is useful if you don't want to have 10 gb of images in your program / game. I never really used vector as i had no need, if i need something in higher resolution, i draw it in higher resolution. And if you want your art not to blur while scaling, you should try making it 2 times bigger instead of a random scaling. It works most of the time, and doesn't get that blurry. But it won't fix the pixels, they are there, always and forever.

A cool thing about vectors is that they often save a LOT on storage space. This is why old flash animation used vectors, because the internet used to be really slow, and flash allowed for animations to be shared online efficiently.

My boi clip studio paint has Vector and Rastor as well as having your Rastor brushes in the Vector layer and Vector brushes in Rastor layer to swap between Rastor and Vector you need to add a layer that it there is two layer add options being “add Rastor layer” and “add Vector layer” you can also have Rastor sketch then add a Vector layer on top and do line art an’ colouring

i'm a sucker for anything vector, i just love it's flexibility. My only issue with it is that as much as inkscape is powerful, it's still not as powerful as i'd like and there is basically nothing free to do vector animation a side from glaxnimate which crashes on me every microsecond and blender as much as it tried to be 2d software as well, it isn't. i just wish vector art was more popular to get decent software to make it with...

As someone who works in the printing industry, I have seen absolutely gorgeous vector art that looks like a painting! Unfortunately, those files are usually either 90% meshes or tens of thousands of individual gradient pieces. They are damn near impossible to color correct without first rasterizing them. Never mind the amount of work that goes into making the files in question.

all despicable me jokes aside, vector is WAAAAY easier than raster imo. with vector, you can easily tweak your shapes and lines infinitely, while raster doesn't have that luxury. also, being able to move around any group of objects without having to redraw your background is a godsend. it's much easier to create a 2d rig in vector than raster, but it takes a bit to learn how to use vector with enough skill to make a decent picture or animation. scratch, despite being mainly a programming language, uses vector art for its sprites with a simple vector drawing system, and it's what i learned vector art on, and currently the only vector art program i have access to due to my lack of a pc.
