If it's going to cost the BBC 2 million quid, then why don't they just terminate his contract and get someone fresh to present the show instead? I was honestly happy to see him go earlier this year because it's shocking how he can say anything he wants on social media, unrelated to football and yet other BBC employees can't. As others have mentioned on this thread, you can see highlights on YT (and presumably on other outlets) fairly soon after a game ends, so why wait until MOTD is on? The big money is in live broadcasts.

But Gary is the Director General of the BBC, didn't you get the memo? Gary can say whatever he wants without restriction unlike other BBC employees. He must be in charge - nobody would be paid £1.3 million just to comment on a football match every week - that would be insane. He is paid this vast sum to run the BBC. He will be given a knighthood very shortly and can be "Sir Gary" in recognition of his brilliance in running the BBC. (Into the ground, I might add.)

Don't agree with ending the BBC or making it a typical private company, it won't be better for news despite what people say - but I'm all in favour of losing the big salaries and cutting some of the entertainment. The interview with Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty, each on hundreds of thousands of pounds a year, questioning Chris O'shea, who was at least honest about his salary, was laughable.
